The Digital Board with Global Competency

Insightful and ultramodern global leaders can make a deep influence because their unique observation and clear discernment can touch the heart and connect the mind.

Global competency is the ability to understand and act on issues of global significance or solve complex problems which have a global impact. Collectively, at the board level, global competency represents the global leadership, mindset, knowledge, insight, expertise, attitudes, skills, and behaviors necessary to thrive in today's hyper-connected and interdependent world.

Global leadership: Fundamentally, leadership is about the future and direction - how to navigate their organization in the right direction. Being global is about crossing not just borders but also cultural divides between business, government, and social sectors. Companies don’t exist in silos but within systems, especially global ones. The business world we live in is in the digital paradigm shift, the change from a “multinational” organization that adapts the operations of each country or regional unit for local needs to a “global” firm with standardized, but agile, and horizontally integrated technologies and processes. An authentic global leader is a diplomat with global influence. The board directors with global mindset involve a personal intention to focus on being global, with global leadership qualities such as tolerance of ambiguity, cultural cognition, learning agility, mastery of handling complexity, and the skills of communicating virtually and working across cultures. Besides being brilliant and master the functional skills, he or she must be a strong communicator and a strategic thinker and know how to collaborate with stakeholders of all stripes.

Global cognizance, global insight, and foresight: Global perspective is important in a more volatile, uncertain, ambiguous, hyperconnected and globally distributed world as you need a directional guide. Corporate boards play a critical role in steering the business towards the global business world with uncharted water and blurred boundaries. Board directors should develop global cognizance and navigation competency by scanning the external environment and making sure that you’re seeing signals, patterns, and trends that are going to have an impact on your company’s ability to continue to thrive and grow. Developing global insight and foresight requires holistic thinking, strategic thinking, systems thinking and forecasting capability. Without such capabilities, companies can fail to increase value and competitive edge in a global economy. The board director as the global leader and talent master also needs to have insight into the capabilities and expertise inherent in the talent they have now, more critically, they need the foresight to seek out the potential and capabilities they’ll need for the future development, the well-blended insight, and foresight can drive competitive value and global growth.

Solve complex problems with global impact:
Highly effective board directors can think globally and holistically, and take systematic approaches to solve complex problems with global impact. It takes multidimensional thinking to frame the right problem and empathetic thinking to address the correct need. Keep in mind, due to the complexity and interdependence of digital new normal, the problem-solving thought processes and practices will not be simple for many of today’s complex issues, especially at the global scope. Sometimes you intend to fix one issue; it perhaps causes more issues or side effects later on. It takes a holistic worldview that looks at problems or issues in such a way that a solution emerges through a collaboratively multicultural approach involving global psychological capital, intellectual capital, and global social capital. Effective global leaders with culture empathy at the board level can lead effectively in a global business environment; articulate and embody the diverse values and culture of the organization; respect colleagues and reports with empathy; engage effectively with multiple internal and external stakeholders, customers and partners worldwide; make effective decisions by leveraging variable factors; create core competency to expand global business growth; and nurture a working environment in which global team and virtual team can thrive.

Insightful and ultramodern global leaders can make a deep influence because their unique observation and clear discernment can touch the heart and connect the mind. Statistically, more than half of organizations were experiencing a leadership shortage, it becomes an even more serious problem at the senior leadership level such are corporate board. Going digital is a “paradigm shift” - a fundamental change in thinking at the board level is required to tackle talent shortfall, and it’s strategic imperative to develop new capabilities for managing a global supply chain, leadership development, workforce planning, strategy alignment, and workforce diversity capabilities. It is the journey to reach the next level of digital maturity.
