Consider digital organizations as the self-organized but interlaced environment. Being digital is the fundamental shift from the mindset to behavior. 

The digitalization flattens the organizational hierarchy and blurs the functional, organizational and geographical borders in the business ecosystem. It is like the gigantic puzzle with many misplaced pieces, you have to put them all in the right places to discover the real meaning and unleash its full potential. You cannot make a true digital paradigm shift without an in-depth understanding of the digital interconnectivity and embracing the multitude of digital hybridity.


Dynamism: Digital means flow. Digital organizations have to be solid enough to keep the business running but fluid enough to enable information and ideas flowing with the expanded digital ecosystem at the accelerating speed. The high mature digital organizations that can strike the delicate balance have a flexible structure, with self-adaptation, openness, and resilience. The limited hierarchy works best in a creative environment where the free flow of ideas and their prompt implementation give some sort of form and open enough to its environment and respond to changes dynamically.

Interdependence: The evolution of human society has gone through three stages: Dependence, independence, and interdependence. The collaboratively interdependent organizations can reach the higher state of business maturity because limited hierarchy works best in a creative environment where the free flow of ideas and their prompt implementation is a key element of business success. Thus, the organizational design problem would be to build the great mix of organizational elements that enable the organizational interdependence, enforce cross-functional collaboration and ensure that the business as a whole is superior to the sum of pieces.


Hyperconnectivity: It’s a hybrid, networked, and extended modern working environment, the digital computing technology enables the seamless virtual platform, enhance the flexible organizational structure, empower workforce to change and innovate, engage customers and partners to voice their feedback, and encourage broader conversations and interactions within its business ecosystem. The emerging organizational models will integrate with social process models with both structured and unstructured social processes, to enable information synchronization and improve organizational responsiveness and flexibility.

In order to survive and thrive amid constant changes, companies must reclaim the right balance of standardization and flexibility and harness the multitude of digital hybridity.
