Idealism & Inference

Under a complex digital environment with“VUCA” new normal, we need to look at each situation individually, ponder around intriguing inference behind complexity and ask what leadership model is required.


The fact is that change is happening at a much faster pace than ever before, requiring much more rapid response in order to survive and thrive. Organizations across vertical sectors are on the journey of digital transformation. Change, creativity, and problem-solving are all important perspectives on driving the business forward. Competitive leaders need to have strong logic, enthusiasm, and quality information to explore uncovered territories, pursue growth opportunities. It combines restless dissatisfaction with the current state coupled with the excitement of leading individuals or teams to find innovative solutions that will produce great results. So they can build differentiated business competencies effortlessly.


Vision first, communication follows: Leadership is not about who is ahead, but who has the vision to see further with clarity, has confidence and insight to navigate the business on the right path, has inference to debunk the puzzle of business maturity. In specific, you need to have strategic intelligence, interrelated set of skills-foresight, systems thinking, visioning, motivating, etc, to connect dots into the future, and take initiative to drive continuous conversations. Keep in mind, communication is not for its own sake, It’s the tool to solve problems and lead progressive changes. In the executive suite, you need a balance of logic, creativity, and persuasiveness to explore the unknown, reject conventional structures and thoughts, and advocate a culture of learning and creativity.

There are transformational concepts that may be seen by a majority as a departure from logic, but forward thinking leaders appreciate their value, transform them into innovative management disciplines and stepwise business actions. Transformational leaders tend to be quicker to recognize and potentially impact the social or economic change in very early stages, lead and sell the vision, strike a balance between taking people outside of their comfort zones whilst building confidence that the change is desirable and achievable. They are open-minded and disciplined; creative and critical; confident and humble; insightful and forethoughtful, local and global; perceptive and persuasive, passionate and mature, etc., in order to deal with intriguing digital new normal and lead forward confidently.

Identify the right problems, before solving them in the right ways: There are illogical problems or wick problems. Some problems are the symptom; other problems seem irrational. Every complex problem is essentially novel and unique, it takes contextual understanding and inferential intelligence to deal with it smoothly. There’s the problem that the same word means different things to different people with cognitive diffidence or diverse backgrounds. The assumption that there is a single cause to a "problem" in a complex adaptive business system is unhelpful. To frame the right problem, make extensive observations and investigations and ask thought-provoking questions, gather adequate information by adopting a more holistic and inclusive view to fill blind spots or bridge cognitive gaps. It’s crucial to look at the problem from a different angle or understand the issues via multi-disciplinary lenses, in order to get the “scope” of the problem.

Oftentimes, misperception or misinterpretation of the issue is caused by pre-conceptual judgment, random assumptions, or simply lack of deeper understanding. Leadership must go beyond the status quo, to value collective wisdom, because it helps you actually understand the problem, and understanding a problem is the most critical step in solving it. High-intelligent leaders are in demand because solving a complex problem today takes a programmatic approach with a multi-stepped process and a multi-stage solution that includes both problem resolution and solution implementation. All stages must be handled with attention, logic, and proficiency to ensure success.

Inquiring- Intellectual stimulation - Idealizing - Implementing: A friendly digital working environment is like the melting pot to inspire creativity, encourage free thinking & experimenting, stimulate intellectual curiosity and innovation. Innovative leaders are in strong demand to establish an innovation atmosphere for nurturing creative ideas and transforming them into the commercial value of the business. Logically, it's important to break down silos and be intentional about developing business processes that encourage cross-functional communication and collaboration and enforcing business adaptability and innovation; challenge, debate, and facilitate the dynamic and respectful dialogues to bridge cognitive gaps and share new ideas.

There are some key characteristics to building an open culture, assembling a highly innovative team with all sorts of talent and skills, from sowing the seed of creativity, growing the innovation fruits, to reaping innovation benefits. It’s important to use a counter argument in open discussions just to ensure multiple points of view are explored to spur creative ideas, harness all the spontaneity of interaction the team is capable of and provide the breakthrough thinking to arrive at creative outcomes. These are particularly required during changing time to keep the workforce open to innovation including a compelling future vision and the presence of transformational leadership; high organizational justice (trust); a participatory management style and positive organizational communications.

In substance, leadership is all about the future and change, progress and innovation, direction and dedication, logic and creativity. Under a complex digital environment with“VUCA” new normal, we need to look at each situation individually, ponder around intriguing inference behind complexity and ask what leadership model is required. The success of building a high mature digital organization depends on visionary leadership, systematic management, as well as a creative culture having a strong connection with business objectives, skills, and knowledge to realize well set vision effortlessly.
