High-responsive IT: Digital means changes with continuous disruptions. Running highly responsive IT means a lot of things for the business’s long term success such as speed, ambidexterity, intelligence, agility, maturity, etc. The level of IT responsiveness depends on how well CIOs can balance real technological needs against the risk tolerance of the enterprise. It needs to get full support across the entire company from the boardroom to front desk. It’s not a matter of being reactive or responsive; it’s not a matter of being fearful or brave; it’s a matter of adding value to the business or not. To run a highly responsive and highly effective IT, IT management must get a feeler of the business view. The value of IT shouldn’t be measured via internal operational IT lenses but via business and customers’ perspectives. There is always a compromise to make and the balance to strike for quality and speed. The goal is to be fast enough and take calculated risks for capturing business opportunities, but be cautious of risks and pitfalls on the way.

Proactive IT: To keep IT relevant and run IT as a trustful business partner, CIOs must get totally involved and participated in strategic decisions of upper management and become proactive so that there are no surprises when decisions are made. The CIO needs to be a part of the senior team. IT leaders have to reach out horizontally to their business peers because a business-engaged CIO is an accepted leader to run proactive IT and keep navigating through a rough sea. IT needs to be a proactive business problem-solver. In all cases, the common element of proactive IT is business engagement - whatever and wherever the business needs are. Running proactive IT not only means to well align business with IT but also means to enforce IT-business engagement; not only about providing IT services to the business users; but also about solving key business problems to benefit end customers; not only about taking orders from customers, but also about suggesting premium solutions they couldn't figure out on their own. IT-business proactive interaction, communication, and cross-functional collaboration are strategic imperative to accelerate changes and drive digital transformation.

Real-time IT: The real-time digital enterprise gets wired without wire, the emerging digital technologies provide both organizations and employees alternatives to access work-related real-time information with their fingertip remotely. IT can empower business users with efficient digital platforms and tools to harness real-time cross-functional communication and collaboration. The modern organization needs to be non-stop, instant-on, and adapt to changes proactively. The goal to run a real-time digital IT organization is to create synergy and achieve digital synchronization of the entire organization. The highly responsive IT organization should lead the way into participative models that better support the quantum lead in speed we are experiencing now and run a highly intelligent and high-performance digital organization.

It’s a continuous journey for adapting to today’s fast-changing and dynamic digital ecosystem. IT is an accelerator for speeding up the business, catalyzing innovation, driving changes and enable the company to reach the next level of business growth and maturity.
