Ingredientsinleadership

Leadership is a compelling story that you need to write continually to make an impact all the time.

As we live in the hyper-diverse and interdependent world, leaders today should lead by influence, not via brute force. They can bridge a variety of gaps, facilitate innovation agenda, and orchestrate business transformation insightfully.

There is no one single attribute to digital leadership; there is a delicate mix of leadership, management, and interpersonal skills, along with a lot of different attributes, to improve leadership intelligence and maturity.

Authenticity: Authenticity is the foundation to be a great leader conveying conviction and building credibility. Becoming a leader is a process of becoming your true authentic self in all that you are today and "to be" in the future. When you dig deeper in yourselves, the questions arise - Who are you? What makes you unique? Why do you want to lead, what can you bring to the table?

An authentic leader fills multiple gaps from mindset to actions, in order to lead to the future confidently. When you are authentic, keep minds flowing, release creative energy, out of this comes a beautiful thing, the freedom of choice and the power of leadership influence.

Vision: Leadership is supposed to be the guiding force in the organization, knowing your calling and acting from vision; envisioning and leading the business towards its future confidently. A leader changes the course of the business by seeing beyond what all others see and by understanding issues from new perspectives.

The vision and intention of becoming a leader are to facilitate and encourage, as change is often an uncomfortable, yet necessary part of reaching and maintaining success. Being a leader means giving people confidence on where to go and how to get there, supporting them and also stretching them to unleash their full potential,

Competency: Leadership is both natural and nurtured. Leadership competency is multifaceted, interrelated with the traits, and experience. Leadership is about trying to determine which competencies or capabilities should be used in which combination, and with what level of weight for each, for different situations, to drive needed changes. Neither one overshadows the other.

For example, top leaders have navigation competency directly impacts how they lead and make influence. Creative leaders present high-level innovation competency to improve organizational innovation excellence. Great leaders can integrate their professional competency with leadership vision and influence to create a ripple effect. Contemporary leadership must be built on the foundation of the moral competencies –insight, justice, courage, and temperance, etc, in order to build strong influential competency relentlessly.

Integration
: Leadership is not one dimensional, but needs to integrate lots of great ingredients, with a “big picture” in mind for harnessing collaboration, enhancing unification, and orchestrating harmonization. Integration is the cure to silos. Thus, it’s always important to collect information and feedback for all related parties; understand all relevant components inside-out and outside-in, so you can put them in the right place, glue them or lubricate them to ensure that they become a holistic entity rather than a sum of parts.

Leadership integration is based on the breadth of expertise and depth of impact, break down silo mentality, be open-minded, leverage multidimensional viewpoints and integrate diverse perspectives into a holistic perspective that can close blind-spots, apply a holistic approach to coherent decision-making and structural problem-solving.

Innovation: Leadership in itself is a constant learning process that requires the leader to build experience and to share insight. Innovation-leaders are forward-looking, build up the working environment to nurture creativity, enable cross-functional collaboration, and encourage the freedom of thinking and action.

Innovation is a multi-disciplinary effort. It requires a much higher degree of innovative thinking, initiating new conversations that galvanize inspiration and gain traction on a powerful theme of renewal and growth. Thus, the most productive innovation teams should embrace multiple disciplines, close cognitive gaps, connect more dots to yield better ideas and competitive advantage.

Coaching: Leadership today must be very open to knowledge, desire for insight, and hunt for wisdom, practice expert power to advise, coach, and make continuous delivery. Coaching doesn't mean micro-managing, it is about developing the employees in terms of making them high performers.

Great leaders as a coach can show the team how to explore their own natural skill sets, talents, and strong sides, taking into account their own objectives in line with working needs. So people are confident to understand there is always a way to explore “the art of possible” - if they are willing to spend the time and energy in self-development. Listen a lot, Ask, Explore, Seek commitment, Challenge, Work with, Put process first, Prevent pitfalls, Seek results, Take responsibility, Make influence, consistently.

Resilience
: Resilience as one of the important leadership qualities, enables people to press on and persevere despite difficult circumstances. People have different perceptions and personalities; some are more resilient, they face difficulties, and stand again, with survival's mentality; some are more vulnerable; few might face difficulties, bounce back and transform into a rock solid character, so they become strong leaders who demonstrate emotional intelligence.

The level of leadership resilience depends on how people can prepare for changes or disruptions on the way, increase learning agility, empathy; how they can manage the gray area effectively in today's “VUCA” –Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous business environments; how they can build multiple core professional competencies to make progressive movement indefatigably.

The challenge for being a leader is how they can move the “needle” forward, being flexible to lead forward and sustain leadership impact. Leadership is situational, there is the time you need to lead ahead and facilitate answers, there’s the time you might need to lead from behind. Leadership is an influential power. How to influence is also dependent on the active coping mechanisms that they use to survive and thrive in a given set of living conditions. Leadership is a compelling story that you need to write continually to make an impact all the time.
