Either be a disrupter or being disrupted, the effects of an increasingly digitalized world are now reaching into every corner of the organization and making significant impacts on every aspect of the business from people, processes, to technology and capability both horizontally and vertically. Digital Fit doesn't mean that everyone needs to have the same thought processes, the same personalities, the same preferences, or the same experiences. What is digital fit, and how do you define digital fit?

  • Three “W” Factors in Innovators Creativity is everything that people dream, see, feel, touch. All our experiences are completely reconfigured in a way that mixes up all of the important elements to spark creativity. Creativity is as much defined by the problem as by the capacity of the individual to connect things to resolve that problem in new and sometimes unexpected ways. Here are three “W” factors in innovations.

Blogging is not about writing, but about thinking and innovating the new ideas; it’s not just about WHAT to say, but about WHY to say, and HOW to say it. It reflects the color and shade of your thought patterns, and it indicates the peaks and curves of your thinking waves. Unlike pure entertainment, quality and professional content takes time for digesting, contemplation and engaging, and therefore, it takes the time to attract the "hungry minds" and the "deep souls." It’s the journey to amplify diverse voices and deepen digital footprints, and it's the way to harness your innovative spirit.

Three “C”s in Innovators

Innovators are the critical bridge to connect today and future, to push the human progress from one generation to the next generation.

Creativity has many forms and manifestations. Creatives have many traits and strengths. There are many unique ingredients to make “creativity formula.” There is a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic elements to ignite creativity. Here are three “C” elements in innovators.

Cognition: Cognitive difference nurtures creativity. Cognition is a faculty for processing of information, applying knowledge, and changing preferences. Cognition, or cognitive processes, can be natural or artificial, conscious or unconscious. These processes are analyzed from different perspectives within different contexts. Individually, people with cognitive understanding can assimilate all relevant information, and transform them into the unique insight which ignites creativity or fuels innovation. Collectively, a highly innovative team setting is often composed of people with cognitive differences: There are people who can generate lots of original ideas, and it's equally important to have people who can evaluate and implement these ideas! The cognitive difference can help to ask good questions which spark creativity and encourage innovative thinking. Innovators have the capability to reframe the circumstances or conditions around a problem and solve it creatively. Creative people are typically disrespectful of the status quo, and their creativity is really their way of breaking out, or of reframing how we see the world. So, it's important to build a culture where creativity is not just accepted but encouraged, the team with cognitive differences will have the better capability and complementary skills to create more fresh ideas or solve problems in an unconventional way.

Connectivity: Creativity is all about connecting the dots. It’s the innate thinking process to connect dots. A connecting mind that is free from the psychological inertia. Perhaps an essential feature of the creative brain is its degree of connectivity, both inter-hemispheric and intra-hemispheric. The right hemisphere is the source of creativity, and it also has very far-flung connections throughout the whole brain. And the innovative aha arises when original connections are made. Creativity starts with the biological basis of creativity (nature); then the development of those characteristics during maturation (nurture); then the biological and social support of those traits (nutrition). The mind needs to be freed so that it’s connected to the rest of the universe and allows ideas to flow through.  Being creative is the mind with the thinking process that holds onto its nature connectivity while being prepared to connect the dots even in the opposite direction should they make sense. Creativity needs the vision to inspire and imagination to spark. Creativity is a creative mix of action artifacts and biological or personality characteristics. Often connectivity triggers creativity and creative mind has a better ability to connect dots.
Coherence: The ability to maintain focus and clarity, even under extreme pressure, is what science calls coherence. Many times, creativity sparks in solitude. A focused mind has a better ability to work on creative activities. Because people with creative coherence can use their whole brain, to synchronize multiple thought processes, analysis, and synthesis, divergent and convergent thinking, logic and intuition, conscious and subconscious thinking, assemble coherence from seemly unrelated phenomena, and come out with fresh ideas or create the “Aha Moment.” Each stage of collective progress represents the increased complexity and require new awareness, new intelligence, and new thinking skills. Thus, creative people often present intellectual coherence than the majority of people. Creativity or innovation shouldn’t be just serendipity, structural creativity is about how to “translate” creativity in a structural way, not through linear processes, but with integral, interactive and iterative thinking activities to develop novel ideas, and then move forward, leverage innovation process to achieve their business value.
Being innovative is a state of mind. Creative people have the curiosity to see things differently, they have the vision to inspire creativity and they are great problem solvers for both framing the right problems and solving them creatively. They are the critical bridge to connect today and future, to push the human progress from one generation to the next generation.

The New Book “Digital Fit - Manifest Future of Business with Multidimensional FIt” Quote Collection V

Digital fit should be defined as “mind fit,” and then following with attitude fit and behavior fit.

The multidimensional digital transformation provides impressive advantages in terms of the speed of delivering business solutions and ability to adapt to changes.

46 The right people have the right mindset, they are high-positive, high-innovative, high-influential and high-mature.

47 What truly makes a human as an intelligent being is our thinking capability.

48 The creativity strength is like a spinning wheel, you need to figure out how to boost it up.

49 At ultimate level, diversity means the color of character and diversity of thoughts.

50  It is critical to put the right people in the right position from sowing the seed of creativity, growing the innovation fruits, to reaping innovation benefits.

51 Attitude is one’s “Settled Mode of Thinking.”

52 The high-effective and high mature leadership is based on vision, learning agility, and change capability, not just personality only.

53 Learning agility will directly impact the speed of digital transformation, the effectiveness of digital leadership, the creativity of workforce, and the overall organizational maturity.

54 The better way to define experience is “Lesson Learned.”

55 The great communication is not to create more gaps but to bridge the difference and encourage creativity.

56 The organizations with the culture of empowerment and democratic meritocracy will reap the benefits of amplifying collective human capabilities and unleashing the full digital potential.

57 Digital fit should be defined as “mind fit,” and then following with attitude fit and behavior fit.

Three Aspects to Understand the Creative Side of IT

Modern IT has many faces. Understanding the element of art in digital IT is for achieving the art of possible.

IT is well known as an engineering discipline and an isolated back-office function with a set of mysterious hardware boxes to keep the business wheel spinning. With emergent lightweight digital technologies and overwhelming growth of information, IT management shouldn't just practices some transactional activities, it has to discover both the art and science of digital management discipline. Because technology is often the disruptive force of digital transformation, and information could be one of the most time intensive pieces to innovation puzzles. Here are three aspects to understand the creative side of IT.

The engineering side of IT is both art and science: Many perceive engineering as an art because it involves with personalized observation & judgment, design thinking, intuition, and innovation. The engineering side of IT enables it to take a logical path to implement ideas as well as to figure out solutions to most types of problems. The artistic side of IT lifts up its maturity from functioning to firm to delight. Often, the engineering side of IT is hidden inside the business perspective of IT, make it invisible and humble. But the element of art in IT can improve customer satisfaction via an intuitive interface and cool products/services. With engineering as science, different people specify requirements and read results, you get the same explanation. With engineering as art, the more people specify, the more version you get. The balance of art and science in IT is how to enforce scientific discipline, but also make continuous efforts in building better products/services and improving IT maturity. The scientific side of engineering is for automation, reliability, and continuity, and the artistic side of engineering is about imagination, innovation, and invention.

IT as the creative force for driving digital transformation: The modern IT is not equal to IT modernization, it goes a step further, doing more with innovation and solving problems creatively. Technology is the disruptive force behind the digital transformation. IT has potential to become creative business problem solver because it is in the unique position to connect cross-functional dots, also because the original gem of a creative idea is often, if not always arrives at through the interaction of ideas from different domains of thoughts and experiences. And innovations often happen at the intersection of people and technology. To run an innovative IT organization, the more difficult challenge is not just launching successful teams, but maintaining their motivation and focus. IT needs to build a culture of innovation, and talented IT professionals should be empowered to use the creative side of their thinking for discovering new ways of doing things that allow for innovation to happen. IT innovation practices need to be customer-centric, point out that customer inquiries are not just support related, but they can foster better ways the application can perform and optimize every touch point of customer experience. IT needs to become an innovation engine of the business, as well as a business enabler to catalyze growth. Technology is complex, but digital technology is also intuitive, hide its complexity from customers, and it is the piece of art created via practicing scientific engineering disciplines.

The entrepreneurial side of IT to commercialize business value: Usually, entrepreneurs are creative because they have to experiment a lot, learn a lot, take a lot of risks and even fail a lot, for unlocking their creativity and achieve commercial success as well. Running IT as a software startup - IT entrepreneurialism becomes a new fixture for management in their efforts to create a new revenue stream, explore emergent business opportunities, substantiate their competitive position, affect the market landscape, and drive business growth. IT needs to know how to promote its products and services. IT cannot be seen as an innovation engine unless IT management clearly understands what their organization does for a living. CIOs as intrapreneur-leaders can explain the big “whys” clearly, to articulate the strategic rationale behind the venture. They will contribute to revenue generation when they are part of the senior executives' team responsible for the strategy making and revenue targets. In many highly innovative companies, entrepreneurship is about discovering the new path for digital transformation. Intrapreneur leaders often have balanced viewpoints to perceive success and failure objectively, such mental toughness will help an organization become more resilient, and nurture the culture of risk-tolerance and balancing innovation with other organizational priorities.

Modern IT has many faces. Understanding the element of art in digital IT is for achieving the art of possible and make a seamless digital transformation. Pursuing the art of possible involves new ways of bringing together ideas and resources to create something novel, achieve business objectives in any way possible. Take calculated risks to explore new opportunities hidden in the volatile and uncertain business environment, and delight customers via products or services with cool design and intuitive interface. Digital IT can become the “whole brain” of their business via mastering both the art and science of IT management discipline.

The New Book “Digital Fit - Manifest Future of Business with Multidimensional FIt” Quote Collection IV

The knowledge you select becomes “part’ of you, and shapes the lenses you perceive the world.

The multidimensional digital transformation provides impressive advantages in terms of the speed of delivering business solutions and ability to adapt to changes.

35 At present time, we cannot separate knowledge and creativity if we want to stay competitive on the market.

36 Information Management is all about having the right people to have the right information to make the right decisions at the right time.

37 Knowledge is without a doubt one of the most valuable and most poorly managed assets in business today.

38 An understandable mind is a step closer to innovation, and two inches deeper to wisdom.

39 Imagination is lost without knowledge.

40 Knowledge is the power, you have to apply it at the right time in the right circumstance with the right attitude.

41 Insight is a perception beyond the thought, the multi-dimensional cognizance, and it’s the experience to explore oneself, surrounds and beyond.

42 The knowledge you select becomes “part’ of you, and shapes the lenses you perceive the world.

43 Knowledge Management is a human problem and not a technological problem.

44 For human as species to survive and thrive, the true wisdom is the most important thing to push the world forward.

Three Traits of Contemporary Digital Board Directors

The digital principle of building a contemporary board needs to be open-minded, foresightful, changeable, knowledgeable, innovative and committed.

The corporate board today is the mastermind behind the digital transformation. Due to the complexity, uncertainty, ambiguity, and volatility of the digital era, the directorship in any forward-thinking organization must have the ability to guide, inspire and motivate people top-down and bottom-up toward accomplishing shared visions and goal. But more specifically, what are common leadership traits and characteristics of digital board directors? And what are complementary mindsets, skills, and experiences needed to build a contemporary digital board?

Vision: The corporate board directors are advising role to steer the organization in the right direction. Thus, vision is important for leading the organization ship in the uncharted water and blurred business territories. The contemporary digital directors have the vision to see further and convey it with clarity, set principles that instruct the management team to make an advanced movement. Visionary leaders see possibilities before others, but they also need to tackle great challenges with grand consequences over long time spans. Vision differentiates advanced strategic boards from the compliance-focused board. Because they can provide the direction with confidence, oversee strategy with a sound judgment, as well as bring leadership skills to the table, such as decision-making, delegation, and monitoring. Digital leaders including board directors need to be constantly VISIBLE sharing VISION and enabling others to share it. The vision for long-term digital transformation is required for the change to be effective and lasting.

Change: Change is the “DNA” of modern leadership, it starts at the board level. We live in a world where change is the norm and if we don't embrace it, accept it, roll with it or make it happen, we're not going to be successful. While there are many components of leadership, one of the most important ones is the ability to adapt, model and influence change. It is a basic human ability to inspire self and others to look beyond limitations and make continuous improvement. This is particularly important at the board level because board directors help to oversee the business agenda for change and digital transformation, they also must help to push this agenda, pull all important business resources to achieve it. The contemporary corporate board can inspire, innovate, improve, interact, interpret, influence, exemplify, encourage and orchestrate change, as change is often uncomfortable, but a necessary part of reaching the future and sustain the success.

Innovativeness: There is no one size fits all leadership formula. Board directors are the leadership role, leadership is the adventure to explore unknown, and have confidence and insight to take the right path for reaching the destination. Sometimes, there are multiple paths you should select, and more often than not, there are emergent opportunities and risks you have to embrace. In many circumstances, there is not just one solution to a problem, but multiple ones. And often the answer to many questions is not just “right,” or “wrong,” but there are many shades in between. Thus, to make wise advice, board directors also need to practice creative leadership to think and do things innovatively, test the uncharted water and take the different path. The ultimate criterion of "creative leadership," is to envision the future trends in business, technology, and society, explore business opportunities, build the capacity to unleash human potential, to spread leadership influence and create more and more authentic and creative leaders.

Digital means to break down the past and lead toward the future with a quantum leap. The foresightful organizations should always look for complementary mindsets, capabilities, skills, and experience. Many leaders and managers today have intentions to lead but lack cognitive understanding, intellectual sophistication, and differential leadership strength to lead effectively in the "VUCA" digital new normal. An ultra-modern board can set a clear choice among future scenarios that advocate advancement and promotes positive behavior. The digital principle of building a contemporary board needs to be open-minded, foresightful, knowledgeable, innovative and committed in order to contribute to strategy oversight when required and effectively at all times.

Take a Hard Look at IT to Get Ready for Change and Digital Transformation

Take a HARD look at IT from a different angle is critical to ensure IT management is steering in the right decision.

Digital IT has many faces, the technological side is perhaps hidden inside as the business enabler; the business side shows the measurable high-performance business result, the customer side of IT needs to be perceived outside-in, the creative side of IT solve business problems innovatively, and the commercial side of IT helps the company improve profitability, and lift its maturity as the strategic business partner. To develop a good strategy and a practical roadmap, first things first, IT leaders need to take a hard look at IT from all different angles, identify its strength and weakness, problems and potential, in order to get ready for change and drive digital transformation.

Take a wide organizational view and business eco-environmental scan: Organizations today are hyperconnected with their business ecosystem because today, the geographical, functional, business or even industrial borders are blurring. The digital organization is a living thing with the ability to continually change as the world changes and evolves with an intersecting and interacting business ecosystem seamlessly. Companies across sectors ultimately respond to the external environment as geopolitics, economic cycles, rapid innovation, and social expectations change the business landscape and blur the digital territories. Therefore, it is a strategic imperative to broaden IT outlook and envision the bigger picture about digitalization, reimagine the art of possible and maximize IT potential. Digital businesses today are not just working within the industry, they are, in fact, permeating cross-ecosystem which is dynamic, continuous and interactive. Information & Technology today not only help to smell the business growth opportunities based on such an organizational eco-environmental scan and real-time business insight but also knit all important business elements to differentiated organizational competency to adapt to changes. The business ecosystem is just like the natural ecosystem, first, it needs to be observed from different dimensions, understood in a holistic matter, and then, it needs to be well planned, and also needs to be thoughtfully renewed as well. A dynamic digital ecosystem explicitly seeks to energize the business environment where the organization can expand its scope, grow, innovate, and take a long-term perspective, scale performance, and harmonized business relationship.

Taking a DEEP look at what's going on inside the IT organization, including its strengths, weaknesses, problems, and potential: IT leaders should make an objective assessment of IT manageability, strengths, and weaknesses. IT should be highly available and efficient internally that it can keep the lights on at less cost and take minimum time to market. However, many traditional IT organizations spend significant time, cost and resources to maintain the heavy out of date IT system and legacy applications. The overly rigid processes in those IT organizations make IT slow to change and less flexible, and IT systems errors will cause revenue leakage and damage the business's reputation. Therefore, CIOs have to take a deep look at what’s going on inside their organization, because IT plays a crucial role in improving operational efficiency, and optimizing business operation management capacity with a keen eye to grasp growth opportunities, manage risks, and applying lightweight technologies seamlessly.  IT optimization is about leveraging technologies to lower costs, improve operations, and increase revenue. The business-driven IT leaders attend business reviews with various business stakeholders and equally invited those business stakeholders to their IT forums, to share IT innovation, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats present within IT. It is important to take a deep look at what's going on inside IT because IT simply cannot stand still, it has to keep improving.

Taking a HOLISTIC look at the variety of business relationship and interconnectivity: Digital is full of uncertainty, velocity, complexity, and ambiguity. Today’s organizations are at a crossroads where the segregation or silo of business units are at a need to reach across the aisles and respectively work with each other. It's important to leverage holistic and systems thinking to understand the variety of business relationship and manage the business in a more structural way. Modern digital organizations are not just the sum of functional pieces, but an integral whole to maximize the performance and achieve the customer’s expectation. The business system is complex and the organization is contextual. Without the contextual understanding of people, process, and technology, the blind spots and gaps are inevitable. IT needs to take a holistic look at the relationship and interconnectivity of the organization so it can help to integrate, optimize, and orchestrate business processes to facilitate business outcomes and build an effective digital ecosystem. IT management is the responsibility of the entire company because the information has to flow across functionally in order to capture the real business insight in a comprehensive way. Thus, IT leaders and managers have to gain a contextual understanding of business interconnectivity and focus on building a cohesive set of business competency in which IT is a key element and superglue.

Digital is charming, digital is fluid, digital is also complex. Digital organizations are complex because of hyperconnectivity, velocity, and interdependence, you can’t separate things properly or you can’t predict the actual effect of interaction straightforwardly. Therefore, take a HARD look at IT from a different angle is critical to ensure IT management is steering in the right decision, to discover IT strength and diagnose IT problems, and then make practical strategic planning and the comprehensive roadmap for change and digital transformation.

The Monthly "Digital IT: 100 Q&As" Book Tuning: Five Big “Whys” in IT Transformation Sep., 2017

Debating is not for stimulating conflicts, but for brainstorming better ways to do things.

Due to the changing nature of technology, IT leadership role also continues to involve & shift the focus, to move up the maturity level. More and more CIOs are requested to take more responsibility and many CIOs present the breadth of leadership competency. The proactive IT debates help IT leaders to brainstorm innovative and better ways to do things and improve management capabilities. Before jumping into HOW, IT needs to dig into big WHY for leading digital transformation of the business. Here is the monthly “Digital IT: 100 Q&As” book tuning with a set of blogs to brainstorm some crucial WHY debates to bridge IT-business gaps.

Five Big “Whys” in IT Transformation Sep. 2017

  • Why is IT so Reluctant to Look at itself? With the rate of change is accelerated, it’s very important for contemporary organizations to continually do “self-reflection’ upon the business effectiveness, process efficiency, strength and risks, culture, and brand etc. IT is a critical component of the business, commonly IT self-evaluation ability is a reflection on overall business culture within the whole organization. Some say IT is so reluctant to look at itself, is it true?

  • Why Is So Hard for Running IT “Out of the Comfort Zone” Technology is pervasive, information is growing exponentially. Business transformation or change initiatives today nearly always involves some form of information and technology. All forward-thinking organizations across the industries claim they are in the information management business. To adapt to the increasing speed of changes, organizations have to be more nimble about updating technology and managing information effectively. Hence, IT organizations today can no longer get stuck at the lower level of maturity to keep the lights on only or get struggling to make an alignment with the business. Digital IT organization must get “out of the comfort zone,” to explore better ways of running IT as a trusted business partner, proactive change agent, and hyper-connected innovation hub. "Continual improvement" is the IT mantra in the digital era.

  • Why is So Critical for Running IT as a Change Agent? At the industrial age, IT is often perceived as the department which is slow to change, acts as a controller only, and gets stuck at the lower level of maturity. However, nowadays, with increasing speed of change and exponential growth of information, IT is like the business's digital engine, CIOs are accountable for critical part of the business that is constantly changing and evolving and IT is also in a position to dig through underlying functions and processes of the businesses. Therefore, it is imperative to speed up IT and run it as a change organization of the business for accelerating digital transformation.

  • Why is INFORMATION -Driven IT a Strategic Shift? The tension between 'business' and IT has been around forever, but instead of getting better, it has gotten worse in the last couple of years. The reason is that digital has become ’normality,’ and almost everyone now feels at ease with digital technology. In other words, the natural knowledge advantage of the IT department has eroded. So what’s IT's digital advantage? Why is information driven IT a strategic shift? How to shift IT focus from "T" - technology-driven to "I" focus, and how to run a high-effective and high performance digital IT?
