Initiativesofgovernance

Governance is neither linear nor single dimensional nowadays; it takes agility, intelligence, and creativity to reengineer governance processes and reinvent governance practices and improve business management fluency and agility.
The speed of change is increasing, and the business ecosystem is more dynamic. The more complex businesses become, the higher the requirement for business connectivity and governance discipline turn out to be in order to meet performance baselines and generate value, allowing different roles to work together in harmony.

Governance principles, processes, and practices need to be assessed, evaluated, and modified periodically to address the latest trend, increasing business management effectiveness, performance, and resilience.

Governance should be understood via multidimensional value perspectives, and be enforced holistically: There’s no fundamental difference between the disciplines of financial control/planning/etc and architectural perspective. Both provide methods, views, rules, and address the different aspects of governance. Business planning helps you address the strategic, financial and technological aspects of business.

Governance is an integral part of strategic planning. By enforcing strong governance discipline, the business management can identify blind spots, close gaps between planning and actions, diagnoses crucial issues that need to be handled with priority, and outlines the preferred course of action in a structural way.

Strong governance discipline is about enforcing decision effectiveness, getting the people, culture, accountability, and performance right: Corporate governance is where resources are allocated to turn the strategy into a reality. After clarifying those shareholder values into corporate strategic goals, business management needs sufficient strong corporate governance to complement their organizational management disciplines.

As you would not like to either have your future strategy constrained by the current corporate governance or the corporate governance weakened by too much creativity. Thus, corporate governance needs to be effective to ensure businesses move in the right direction; but not overly rigid to stifle innovation. Organizations should identify patterns with soft human touch for good governance that sponsors and promotes engagement, motivation, and innovation as these are vital aspects of top-performing enterprises in the modern knowledge economy.

Information governance is essentially for solving complex business problems and weaving the foresight to run a smart business:
Information is the most invaluable asset besides people, it’s important to improve information reliability, authentication, reusability, and consistency. Successful companies with great information governance have set up governance committees that include representatives from various parts of the business and agree on how the data will look, be deployed to create value. Right now there is a significant knowledge gap between having the data, interpreting it, and finally being about to visualize it.

Big Data does not need a big governance, but takes agile governance practice to orchestrate an organization's information strategy, to ensure the big value can be achieved from the abundance of data and information flow. Information visualization can be big enough to show executives the big picture but needs to be nimble enough to stay focused; get from “big picture” initiatives down to how individual efforts contribute to corporate goals either strategically or tactically.

Governance will remain a difficult issue for today’s organizations with extended business boundaries in an increasingly flat world, and the desire for more innovation will make governance issues more complex. Governance is neither linear nor single dimensional nowadays; it takes agility, intelligence, and creativity to reengineer governance processes and reinvent governance practices and improve business management fluency and agility.

Innovationinvestment The business ecosystem is full of complexity and uncertainty, it’s important to understand that there are both opportunities and risks in every investment. The logical investment scenario helps to clarify: Which benefits will be achieved through addressing the key business drivers? Can these business benefits be measured and quantified? What outcomes can the sponsor expect to achieve through investment in the proposed initiative.

Innovationinitiationinvestment Every organization is different, every business initiative is unique, every industry is different, investors are also different, there is no one size fits all formula to invest. Investment is both art and science. Great investors advocate entrepreneurship/intrapreneurship activities, strike the right balance of short-term gain and long-term perspective, put emphasis on investing in people-centric initiatives to catalyze innovation and lead transformative changes.

IllustratebigdatabigROIThough Big Data is the big trend every forward-looking organization intends to catch, as it enables business to capture insight & foresight upon their customers or products service offering, however, from industry study, the return on investment for big data is far lower than promised. What’re the root causes, how to measure Big Data investment more effectively, and can Big Data have Big ROI?

InformationROI Information technology plays a significant role in business transformation. The best way IT can demonstrate value to the business is to invest in understanding the business processes it supports and make improvements that help the business achieve its ultimate goals and objectives by making continuous deliveries.

Initiativeroi A business initiative is to solve a certain problem and achieve certain goals. There are strategic initiatives and tactical initiatives. Organizations are at a different stage of the business growth cycle, they have different strategies for business initiative investment and business portfolio management.

Initiativesofinvestment

Venture investment is a complex business activity; investment management presents the value proposition as an “asset under construction,”
Organizations not only need to survive today, but also thrive for the future; it's critical to invest the resources, time and effort that all parties put into successful initiatives which can build new capabilities and generate new revenue for their business.

The management can do the objective value justification for making better investment. Return on Investment should be expanded into a broader perspective which usually cannot be measured fully in time and dollars such as employee satisfaction, creativity, teamwork or culture evolution, etc.

Assess whether the business improvement is the right investment to be done in the first place: Organization has very limited time and resources, which business investment should provide the greatest return; and which should be invested in the future. Make sure the executive team first understands what it needs to drive future business growth and improve cash flow.

The investment assessment needs to be based on financial metrics and projections for future revenues, cash flows, and return on investment. Regardless of what type of investment philosophy you have, go beyond short-term gain, take a calculated risk and make a long-term investment, organizations have a better opportunity to shift from surviving to thriving mode.

Return on Investment tells the business management how well an investment repays the company: To survive and thrive for the long-term perspective, investment management should involve more planning, more compromise on budget expenditures, and changing outlooks on profit margins as a result.

The Return on Investment value proposition should be an overall measurement based on the combination of quality, performance, cost, schedule, and satisfaction of varying stakeholders. But to take the step further, understanding the satisfaction of stakeholders is what allows the measurement of multidimensional values investment can bring up to the business.

The risk assessment and management process helps investment management identify related risk issues about investment, and prioritize the activities they are committed to resourcing:
The risk assessment process helps investment management prioritize the activities they are committed to resourcing in addition to serving as a cross check for anything that they may have missed.

Investment in new information technology provides new capabilities and competence. However, IT investment is also costly, so risk assessment is extremely important to improve return on investment. Venture investment is a complex business activity; investment management presents the value proposition as an “asset under construction,” The investment justification needs to ensure that the organization spends the money in the right way, help the business open up new channels of revenue and monetization within the enterprise and their ecosystem, to get the right business results.

Initiatenavigation

Forward-thinking organizations need to refine information, navigate through the future of change smoothly.
Compared to changes, the transformation is more radical, with all sorts of ups and downs, bumps and curves. It brings opportunities for business growth, also chaos, frictions as pitfalls.

It takes a holistic approach to connect all important dots with multifaceted perspectives; try to develop, improve, or change everything in prioritized order continuously, and manage business continuums as long as it creates a more long-term business advantage and solves critical business challenges. There are different aspects of business changes at different rates, organizations today need to keep building their unique competency and manage digital transformation seamlessly.

Navigation: With blurred territories and interdependent business elements, business transformation is difficult; going digital is more like a journey than a destination by navigating through changes in a structural way. The real challenge is to understand where and how you can and should improve to get the biggest effect and scale-up across the digital ecosystem smoothly. Building business navigation competency requires the multidimensional understanding of both tangible and intangible business success factors, overcome silo or overly rigid polarity, strike the right balance to lead change steadfastly.

On the navigation dimension, digital leaders have more antennae focused on the trends-what’s going on in the business and the world. Predicting and preparing the next level of business transformation is an iterative learning and changing continuum. So the strategic plans need to get to the level of specifically achievable goals via navigation by clarifying:"Who is doing what, with whom, how are they doing it and when does it need to be started and finished by. As the scale of the organizational interrelations, interactions, and collaboration amplifies the collective capability to achieve more values.

Generalization: Specialization-generalization-specialization is an important iterative cycle of practice-theory-practice for making business evolutionary movements. From a business management perspective, the functional silo is supposed to practice specialization, have a specific goal, and that is actually okay to improve business productivity. But it might cause internal politics, unprofessional competition, cross-functional frictions, etc when different functions need to work collaboratively, generalize a common set of principles, practices, to produce business outcomes.. Holistic management implies that the business as a whole is superior to the sum of pieces.

From an architecture lens, generalization is about abstraction and reusability. An effective generalization framework along with some best practices or lessons learned from the past helps to generalize or figure out a “common formula” for dealing with certain business issues such as product or process development, people, culture development, and identify the right components for reuse. In specific, take an existing or proposed solution and extract from it, by generalization, to come up with an optimal set of guidelines, processes or the next practices to solve problems smoothly, run business optimistically and make transformative changes proactively.

Internalization
: Change is an ongoing business activity. Besides integrating tangible, it’s important to fine-tune “invisible” business elements for striking the right balance, take a further step and involve internalization of the “out-of-the-box” thinking and the digital conceptual model. Business transformation involves internalization of the defined values, culture, and conceptual model, the newly established behaviors will be in harmony with the internalized values.

In order to internalize multifaceted values, rejuvenate business models and reinvent business leadership, there are some key characteristics to build an open culture, assemble a highly competitive team with all sorts of talent and skills, to harness change and reap benefits. Business leaders and professionals need to become open-minded and disciplined; creative and critical; confident and humble; local and global; perceptive and persuasive, passionate and mature, etc, in order to deal with intriguing digital new normal and lead forward confidently.

The emerging digital era has many dimensions and demonstrates different characteristics, providing unprecedented opportunities to leap the business up to the next level of organizational maturity. Forward-thinking organizations need to refine information, navigate through the future of change smoothly. They should fine-tune business structures, processes, cultivate a culture of innovation, build inclusive teams to move forward competitively and thrive in the hyperconnected digital era with fierce competition stepwisely.

Initiativesofleadershipinnovation

Isn't it a tough journey to write 10300 blog postings - to pursue the digital way of brainstorming, innovating and story-telling?

            Initiatives of Leadership Innovation

Influentialleadership All enterprises are designed to varying degrees of detail and with varying degrees of success, but it does not mean that they are architected and orchestrated seamlessly. It is important to reimagine the future of the business boldly, but make an objective assessment of the digital readiness carefully.

Initiativesofleadershipinnovation The "VUCA" new normal forces digital leaders to be cautious of barriers and pitfalls on the way, be proactive, and become more innovative. Leadership sophistication often implies intelligence, profundity, and uniqueness. Great leaders are optimistic realists to convey vision vividly, be intelligent to decide, be nimble to change , be elastic to scale, be resilient to recover, and be innovative to thrive.

Initiativesofgloballeadership The geographical, functional, industrial territories are blurred, business professionals belonging to different communities learn from each other to advocate the most advanced thinking, great ideas, unique insight in order to lead their organizations, and our society to the next level of progression.

Initiatebodleadership Organizations are confronted with unexpected disruptions and fierce marketing competitions, shaping a world-class board is simply not the overnight phenomenon, but a continuous journey via leadership refinement and directorship rejuvenation. Leadership in itself is a constant learning process that requires the leaders to apply their growth mindset, leverage the right tools, and shape fresh insight to lead effectively.

Initiateleadershipasbridge Digital era is volatile, complex, uncertain and ambiguous, to bridge gaps and lead forward smoothly; the top leaders today should be selected by the most advanced mindset with fresh insight and strong vision to think about the past, perceive what is now and foresee the future in pursuit of collective human progress.

Part of the challenge to overcome negative patterns of problem-solving comes down to self-awareness and professional maturity.
Everything, whether tangible or intangible, in the manifested universe, has two poles – the positive and the negative. The difference between positive and negative is perception and choice. We have that choice each day to wake up to be positive or negative.

Negative emotions make people painful, suffering, negative feedback without good intention causes mistrust, conflict; negative ways to solve problems create more problems, make the situations worse, cause more unnecessary pains and decrease the speed of progression.

Negative emotion: Humans are not perfect; emotions work for you, might hurt you as well. There are negative emotions that cause more issues; Your envy degrades integrity or professionalism; your overdosed ego hides your authenticity; your fear drains energy and thwarts creativity.

When you become self-aware, when you know the triggers to the emotions, it is very important to own up to your faults. In fact, you need to observe emotions as a true force, help to move with energy in the direction of your purpose. Let positive emotions flow, but consciously manage negative emotions and improve emotional intelligence.

Negative feedback: People need good feedback to make constant improvement. Whether the feedback is good or bad depends on how sensitively the negative feedback is delivered and the mindset of the people giving or receiving them. The quality of feedback giver is crucial to the quality of feedback being given. If there is a lack of good intention, negative feedback perhaps causes more conflicts or mistrust, creating a negative mentality.

Different cultures have different approaches to feedback, always understand the context besides content, and always capture insight and wisdom from that knowledge. When facing difficulty, a growth mind is able to accept negative feedback with good intention, be more resilient, stay focused, failover and fail forward, and drive human world progress proactively.

Negative patterns of problem-solving:
You can blame, complain, point fingers, wait for a leader to fix the problems; or you can dig into root causes, and try to fix it proactively. The negative reactions to the problems come from a state of distrust, disengagement, and disempowerment. Fixing symptoms only, silo mentality, mediocrity, bureaucratic management style, etc, perhaps all contribute to negative ways of problem-solving. It often brings a negative attitude, sometimes competing via unprofessionalism or lower team morality. People feel they can only be the solution when in fact they are actually the problem in some situations.

Avoiding this pattern begins with a belief and understanding behaviors have ripple effects and that we all tend to be drawn into situations that force us to learn and grow. Part of the challenge to overcome negative patterns of problem-solving comes down to self-awareness and professional maturity. When facing difficulty, good problem-solvers are able to handle adverse circumstances, be more resilient, stay focused, overcome negative patterns, and fix root causes radically.

When people decide together to change something they don't look first for the negatives, they see the positives - the goals, the benefits, the vision. discourage mediocrity which is often the root cause of negative vibes in the workplace. Overcoming negativity is about people willing to give discretionary effort, and are always looking for ways to improve individual and team performance, to make continuous progress.

Influentialleadership

It’s always important to leverage information to capture business insight, apply the latest technologies to improve business efficiency; use architectures to optimize processes, constantly improve quality and the overall organizational performance and maturity.

A
ll enterprises are designed to varying degrees of detail and with varying degrees of success, but it does not mean that they are architected and orchestrated seamlessly. It is important to reimagine the future of the business boldly, but make an objective assessment of the digital readiness carefully.

There are varying degrees of understanding of the scope of corporate governance and the distinction between corporate governance responsibilities and management responsibilities. How to enforce leadership by grouping up capable architects, IT experts and quality experts to revitalize business models, optimize business processes, and improve overall organizational agility and maturity?

Business Process Architect: Quite many organizations still function as a sum of pieces, silos divide people, delay business changes. Inefficient processes create friction and decrease capacities for business transformation. Thus, the broader the reach of the business process, the more diffuse the truth becomes, the more important it is to commit the time and energy required to reach a holistic view of the business process in order to improve its effectiveness and efficiency. Insightful business architects should consider the whole, and their purpose is to achieve the goals for the thing being architected, guide subject matter experts for process improvement.

Business management and governance are interdependent disciplines underpinned by business processes, which are based on a high-level "architecture" of the business process. Business Architecture should have the capability to transform the manual process and the business requirement to process design and process governance. So business process architects, at the senior level, are able to provide the analytical rigor and techniques of the business initiatives for change, especially for the large-scale transformation, captures the interrelationships between key business processes together with enabling support processes and their alignment with the policies, strategies, goals for an organization.

IT Experts: Information technology is the linchpin in weaving all crucial business components such as people, processes, technologies to differentiated business competencies. So knowledge proficient IT experts are in demand to advise on investing in new technologies or opportunities to leverage and re-use existing IT assets accordingly. They need detailed understanding of the capabilities of the selected business processes management technology and experience of integrating multiple systems.

IT roadmaps are one of many inputs into a mature IT-enabled business initiative portfolio management process which is part of IT Governance. At a higher level of IT governance, those IT experts should also be best-placed to provide advice to the process owner and other stakeholders (internal or external to IT) on how to best fit into overall governance structures for alignment, compliance, risk-intelligence.

Quality advocate:
Quality is doing the right thing right, the first time. Besides these critical quality attributes such as proficiency, effectiveness, efficiency, reliability, simplification, consistency, coherence, etc, high-quality enterprise consists of high-quality leadership, people, high-quality products/ services, and high-quality business capabilities/processes, etc. So quality advocates educate people about the essence of making quality everyone’s business; they can effectively lead an organization into good practices, to shape quality as the mindset and quality as the discipline.

"Quality management" needs to be embedded into the corporate culture; it requires engaging all the people involved working together as a team to excel in quality products/service delivery. Quality Management is interdependent, it is not one department’s work, as a degree of quality is in everything people do and experience. It requires engaging all the people involved working together as a team to excel in quality products or services deliveries, increasing transparency of the business environment and improving overall business maturity.

Organizations large or small are on the journey of digital transformation. It’s always important to leverage information to capture business insight, apply the latest technologies to improve business efficiency; use architectures to optimize processes, constantly improve quality and the overall organizational performance and maturity.

Illustratequality

Quality shines through proficiency, consistency, simplicity, reliability, and coherence, etc.
People are always the weakest link in organizations; a degree of quality is in everything people do and experience. Quality is everyone’s business; touch all important perspectives of the business.

Quality management should focus not only on the quality of products and services but also the quality of people, process, structure to achieve the high level of business maturity.

Quality information: In order to prevent a problem in a timely manner, it’s about applying quality data to forecast what will happen in the business and develop a predicting model based on the information you have to develop business agility. By “quality data”; it means clean, organized, actionable data from which to extract relevant insight for forecasting what will happen in the business, and taking steps further, what they should do upon it, to prevent problems at the strategic level.

Technically, streamlining and standardization of information management processes is an essential prerequisite to providing effective information integration solutions for orchestrating business synchronization and increasing management consistency.

Quality leadership, management, professionalism: High-quality enterprise consists of high-quality people who can produce high-quality products & services, develop high-quality business capabilities or processes. The most important thing is to define quality as leadership and quality as management. What is required is clarifying the purpose and engaging all the people involved working together as a team to excel in quality refinement.

Quality leadership is the capacity to leverage quality information in ways that inform and enlighten the management teams. Quality Management is the capacity to optimize systems or processes and inspire support to achieve goals across boundaries holistically.

Quality assessment:
In order to get quality out of anything whether it is people or process, you need to provide investment, dedication, and commitment. Quality assessment is to evaluate both individual and team performance on how effectively they can improve the quality of products/service, their capability/capacity, as well as their agility to bring business to the next level of maturity.

Quality assessment is based on a determinable outcome. And quality is assessed through consideration of completeness, consistency of levels, consideration of value chain/value stream/other reference model. The focus is necessary to maintain or improve quality because there can be positive impacts as well as negative needs to be on capabilities.

Quality shines through proficiency, consistency, simplicity, reliability, and coherence, etc. Everyone has some role in quality; monitor quality and take corrective measures when necessary and possible. The "people, process, technology" must be defined and maintained to support the quality goal and improve overall organizational quality and maturity.

It's a very common and a proven methodology to go through Data -> Information -> Knowledge -> WISDOM cycle in making sound judgment.

T
he environment which the company is in changes over time, new competitors in the market keep evolving. In differentiation, competitive advantage is probably more to do with information fluency, brand name refinement, and quality.

There are varying concepts that need to be clarified in analysis practice; for example: what is "judgment"? How to improve organizational decision effectiveness and business intelligence?

Is it an individual's personal choice about what rules should apply? Or an individual's choice about how close something is meeting a certain standard to make sound judgment: People have their own preference and processes to make judgments. Many social interactions are based on senses of trust (or lack thereof) and other "gut feelings," not logic. "Big Data" may not be replacing these sorts of judgments; but it could eventually tell us something about who those people are, how they decide, and act.

Judgment and decision making are often considered together. Gut-feelings and information analysis go hand-in-hand. It is important to leverage data analysis in making both strategic and operational decisions in the complex business environment with a high degree of unpredictability and ambiguity. In information-savvy organizations, analytics is the ingredient that needs to be well embedded into business culture, to drive data-based decisions both at the strategic and operational level.

Is judgment an application of some method to balance the influence of a variety of opinions and feedback analysis? Information savvy organizations have a healthy information management, and feedback-feedforward cycle. They embrace a variety of opinions, and appreciate diverse viewpoints. Feedback helps to not only make sound judgment, but aid to feedforward for either managing change or accelerating performance. It does not focus on the past; it tells you what is happening so that you can adapt.

So the right scenario of information analysis and decision cycle is to collect information ->capitalize on real facts -> predict the future trends -> be preemptive -> learn from mistakes -> analyze data in order to make sound judgment. Customer-centric businesses have already used data to do sentimental analytics, explore what’s in customers’ minds, gain customer empathy, and take action for driving customer-centric innovation.

How can anything be replicated if one "scientist" uses his or her "judgment"? Businesses explore the power of big or small data to drive business decisions, improve transparency in organizational activities that can be used to increase efficiency. Information scientists apply scientific principles and methods to gather and analyze data in seeking answers to the questions; apply science and research techniques to gather and analyze the "right" data with the attributes such as reliability, accuracy, or consistency in improving analysis accuracy.

Scientifically, if judgment is used in application of scientific method to analyze quality information, the results could be replicated because the same judgment is applied. It’s always important to apply good statistical methods to analyzing data correctly and providing correct interpretations of the results, and design instruments for gathering the kind of data that provides the information most needed to make judgment.

It's a very common and a proven methodology to go through Data -> Information -> Knowledge -> WISDOM cycle in making sound judgment. Whatever we sense as a human being, there is a methodology behind that.. See it - sense it -> get it processed-> react. Information is not the end itself, the end is to improve problem-solving effectiveness and people satisfaction.

Agility is the ability of the business to adapt or initiate change rapidly and cost efficiently, in response to the dynamic business environment.

Agility is the ability to "pivot" and change direction in response to market pressure or to create market opportunity. Companies crossing the industrial boundaries are at different stages of organizational agility. Doing Agile is only an engineering practice, but being agile is the interdisciplinary challenge from top-down and bottom-up, to build a truly holistic organization.

As a senior leader, assessing your current state of business agility, defining a clear goal is a helpful instrument to guide yourself, your team, your business, your relations along the other dimensions to drive needed changes smoothly. Here are a few pitfalls organizations need to avoid in running an agile organization.

Improper IT motivation for adopting Agile: It is mostly the development team adopting "Agile" to avoid planning and documentation. This leads to lack of standards, which leads to a dissatisfied business. The best way to conquer this is to apply agile principles focusing on incremental improvement.

Many businesses aspire to agility when they are burdened by brittle, tightly coupled systems constrained by rigid roadmaps and deployment schedules due to the underlying technical complicacy, integration dependencies, and testing complexity. It requires distinct patterns of IT capabilities, with specific positioning in the enterprise. IT agility is about how IT will enable business agility, how fast IT will deliver the required effectiveness and efficiency. The more alignment between business and IT, the more level of agility for both will be achieved.

Lack of business buy into agile:
Implementing the Agile method is simple but executing the new way of working with the people is a lot harder. Often, agile is pushed into an organization, without pulling the necessary resources and the culture of innovation. Buy-in means giving people a chance to understand why the change is necessary, what’s the best scenario to change, getting them to participate in defining the better process, ensuring they have a voice in improving it.

The business aspiration to agility can often be leveraged to help align business and technology stakeholders around the case for application modernization and rationalization. The voice of professional experience speaks to the on-going need for simplistic, agile plans, increased communication, and information at all levels of the organization. Total buy-in involves top management being able to fully articulate the change, as well as their ability to provide all necessary support where and when it is required,

Business executive management view agile as either just a technique for IT or a secret recipe: Agile needs to evolve and address the needs of executive management, so that they get a reason to believe in Agile. And at the end of the day, it boils down to speaking their language: numbers. But you also have to get management to understand that Agile does not magically make things faster. C-level needs to focus on creating the right organizational culture, where people can take ownership of their processes and believe they will benefit from doing so.

To increase the success rate of large agile transformation programs, the progress to make agility transformation requires more cooperation from varying parts of the organization, giving cross-functional people a good argument for why you are doing agile and what the benefits will be. It helps to orchestrate organizational interrelationship by bridging gaps, sharing information, enforcing cross-boundary communication, building trust, and ultimately leading to greater autonomy and "self-generated" engagement. Agility should not be translated into sacrificing planning, management guidelines or business management discipline. Rather, agility is targeted for enhancing business on-demand and improving the quality of delivery.

With accelerated digital speed, everything is always moving forward promptly. Agility is the ability of the business to adapt or initiate change rapidly and cost efficiently, in response to the dynamic business environment. The higher level of agility the organization can reach; the better performance results the business can achieve.
