Character and capability mutually reinforce each other.

All humans have their innate talent or intelligence, which can be cultivated into their unique set of capabilities. Capability is one’s ability to do certain things, and create certain values, some of them take hard work to put in place; involving degree of learning and variety of life experience that goes with it. Therefore, it cannot be transferred to others completely. 

Every surviving professional has certain capabilities; however, only very few high-performing ones have a high mature level of capabilities. Character and personality are crucial to develop high level capability. Because it takes commitment, resource, life/professional experience, persistence, and time management skills to build capability.

Characters can synchronize one’s mind and heart: People are organic systems that need to continue to grow. Each one of us is unique with a different set of personality and character; we think differently, express differently, and interact with the world differently. Capability development is the coherent process that integrates people’s inner talent, character, psychology with external opportunities and conditions to do certain things and produce desired outcomes. Characters can synchronize one’s mind and heart, so people with strong character demonstrate authenticity, are able to spend time on things that really matter and build their set of capability dedicatedly.

Personality reveals who we are; character forecasts who we will become. People shape different characters based on their set of (principles + perception + personality). Strong character is the foundation for building solid capabilities because authenticity inspires people to discover who they are – their innate talent; positive thinking and courage allow them to overcome difficulty for reaching the next maturity level of capability, persistence enables them to do things consistently and make significant progress. As a matter of fact, professional capability development is a healthy cycle of integration of the variety of hard and soft elements such as character, cognitive ability, skills, knowledge, habit, resources, etc to build differentiated competency. 

Character is the backbone of mental toughness for building high level professional capabilities: Capability is often built through the journey of what you continue to think and do for getting desired outcomes. Character matters because there are often difficulties or obstacles on the way. Character is the backbone of mental toughness and resilience which helps leaders and professionals to respond to changes proactively, act courageously when facing difficulties, bounce back or fail forward. The purpose of capability is to solve problems large or small. People with strong character are able to keep developing their capabilities to solve more complex problems, build high credibility, and improve professional fitness.

The core capabilities are often built via learning and practicing to produce the desired outcome. High mature professional capabilities show the very characteristics such as "quality," “agility,” “flexibility,” "value," “innovativeness,” etc. Highly competitive professionals with strong character have a very clear vision and understanding of the value they can bring up, hold on a set of beliefs that guide their actions to do things that matter, keep improving the maturity of their professional capabilities, and restructure their life integrating the change in some way that works.

Without character, you cannot turn around tough situations and become great problem solvers based on differentiated capabilities: Courage, integrity, loyalty, consistency, resilience, etc, are all special traits of strong character that shape who we are, as a person or as a professional, and keep building reputation as a problem-solver. Character inspires people to hold on to their beliefs and shows courage to do something meaningful with persistence. Being courageous is the combination of vision, passion, and intellectual risk-taking for doing right things and turning around tough situations.

Life is a journey with ups and downs, there is purpose in adversity we all experience and learn from it, and we all are going to get tested at various times. You know where you come from but you are not sure where you’ll arrive or how you get there precisely, so be well prepared for surprises and take the step-wise adventure more confidently. With strong character, along with a positive mentality and flexible attitude, people are able to develop, integrate, and optimize their professional capabilities to achieve exemplary quality and effectiveness.

Character and capability mutually reinforce each other. Character enhances professional capability development via continuous discovering innate talent, and sharpening strength, while competent leaders and professionals reveal character, courage, present the ideas with confidence, pursue the meaningful goals with persistence, show discipline to solve problems and produce expected outcomes. They are moving towards the up cycle of capability development and maturity.
