Vitalism

Vitalism is more focused on explaining biological processes.

In this dynamic and diverse world, the "vital forces" are primarily associated with the philosophical and scientific theory of vitalism. Vitalism posits that life is governed by a unique force distinct from physical and chemical forces, which is responsible for the form, development, and activities of living organisms.

Vitalists believed that this "vital force" distinguished living organisms from inanimate matter and was essential for life processes such as growth and healing.

Vitalism has historically been used to explain biological phenomena that could not be understood through physical and chemical laws alone. Eastern Philosophy, emphasizes the concept of vitalism, which is an indeterminate force or principle that underlies and unites all things in the universe. Vitalism is seen as a natural order or way that governs the cosmos, and living in harmony with nature is believed to lead to a flourishing life.

Organicism or holism emerged as an alternative to both vitalism and mechanism. It emphasizes the importance of the organization and structure of living organisms, suggesting that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Organicism maintains that biological systems cannot be fully understood by examining their individual components alone, as the interactions and relationships between parts are crucial to understanding life. Unlike vitalism, holism does not rely on the concept of a special life force but rather on the complexity and interdependence of biological systems. While vitalism relies on a unique life force to explain biological phenomena, holism emphasizes the importance of the organization and interactions within biological systems.

In Asian philosophy, "qi" is considered a vital force or life energy that permeates the universe and is essential for life. It is believed to flow through the body via invisible pathways known as meridians, connecting organs, tissues, and consciousness. The balance and flow of qi are crucial for maintaining health and well-being. Techniques such as acupuncture, acupressure, and moxibustion are used to stimulate and regulate the flow of qi, aiming to restore balance energies within the body. Qi is also associated with the Five Phases—wood, fire, earth, metal, and water—which are seen as fundamental processes defining the cosmos. These elements and their interactions are used to understand and treat health imbalances in Eastern medicine.

Vitalism significantly influenced the development of modern biology by challenging scientists to explore the unique characteristics of living organisms and to integrate biological sciences with physical sciences, western philosophy and Eastern philosophy, with the goal to discover the abundance of human potential.
