Information

Perhaps one of the important digital mantras to foster communication is that “let the data do the talk,” to advocate fact-based communication and cultivate a culture of accountability.

Compared to the other executive positions, the CIO role continues to be shaken up, refined, reinvented and reenergized. The magic “I” of the CIO title sparks many imaginations and modern CIOs need to wear different hats and play multiple roles.

Here is a set of blogs for brainstorming the role of CIOs and how to reinvent IT to get digital ready.

  Information

Influence We live in a world with exponential growth of information, which brings both opportunities and risks for people and businesses today. There's the implication that, with enough data, which can be refined into insight to make communication more trustful, and decision more fact-based. Perhaps one of the important digital mantras to foster communication is that “let the data do the talk,” to advocate fact-based communication and cultivate a culture of accountability to improve organizational effectiveness and maturity.

Understanding? The digital era upon us is about the exponential growth of information, abundant knowledge, and the rapid pace of changes. While information is an ingredient of knowledge; in order to interpret information, you need knowledge. Both information and knowledge are not equal to insight, but they are the foundation to capture insight and allow people to make the right decisions at the right time. Here is the philosophical and conceptual understanding of information vs. knowledge.

Interrelationship A system is a group of interacting, interrelated, or interdependent elements forming a complex whole. A system has a purpose to perform a set of functions to achieve well-defined goals. A system which is composed of interacting and interdependent pieces has a specific structure which is defined by its components and processes - the interrelationship between components. Managing information and the information position of an organization is what ought to be called Information Management. Information Management is a system with interdependent processes, technologies, and a set of interdisciplinary practices for moving the business to a dynamic, iterative, integral and interactive digital flow.

Unleash Forward-thinking IT organizations are shifting from “T"-Technology-driven to “I” information oriented. The most powerful and differentiating tool in all of today's businesses is INFORMATION and that is provided by IT systems. The aim of modern Information Management has often been described as getting the right information to the right person, in the right format and medium, at the right time, in order to make the right decisions. The value of information is qualitative, measurable, and defined uniquely by an organization. If done well, information can unleash the business’s full potential and maximize its multi-dimensional values. On the flip side, information is also something that can hinder the achievement of strategic objectives, having it unavailable or compromised. Therefore, Information Management is one of the most important management disciples and best practices in the digital organization. So going back to fundamentals, CIOs as “Chief Information Officer”: How to unleash information potential, and the full potential of the business?

Integrity Data is the lifeblood of digital organizations. Data Cleansing has always been a challenge. The best data-driven organizations focus relentlessly on keeping their data clean. Cleaning the data is often the most difficult and time-consuming part of data science. So what are the best principles and practices to overcome Data Quality challenge?
