Understanding Global Society

The modern humanities trace their roots to Ancient philosophies across the world and have evolved to include a broad range of cultural and intellectual studies.

Humanism is a term with a wide variety of applications, but it generally refers to techniques centered on human experience. There are three basic types of humanism:

Classicism: Viewing humanism as a return to classical studies and applying it to classical revivals throughout history.

Humanities: Referring to nonscientific scholarly disciplines such as language, literature, rhetoric, philosophy, and art history. Classical literature was the wellspring of humanitas, with Greek and Roman thought providing much of its basic structure and method.

Human-centeredness: Modern doctrines and techniques based on the centrality of human experience. Renaissance humanism, which began in the 15th century, focused on the ideal of humanitas, which meant developing human virtue to its fullest extent. It valued qualities such as understanding, benevolence, compassion, fortitude, judgment, prudence, eloquence, and love of honor, and called for a balance of action and contemplation.

The modern humanities trace their roots to Ancient philosophies across the world and have evolved to include a broad range of cultural and intellectual studies. Humanistic psychology, which emerged in the 20th century, emphasizes the uniqueness of individuals and their potential for growth and self-actualization. It focuses on love, fulfillment, self-worth, and autonomy.
