Businesses need to break down roadblocks, integrate capability blocks into core competency, so organization as a whole is able to avoid roadblocks, accelerate business performance significantly.

The world is becoming bigger and smaller at the same time; on one hand, abundant information knowledge stimulates more ideas-generation, expanding the horizon of collective progress; on the other hand, the boundaries between functions, organizations, industries, geographical location have blurred, people communicate or compete from all corners of the earth. As a consequence, every forward-looking business has to sooner or later step into the uncharted waters and pursue better solutions to existing or emerging problems.

It is critical to identify, understand, and overcome roadblocks on the way. If necessary, change the rules you usually apply, bring the outlier’s perspective, update knowledge, deepen understanding, harness communication, bridge multiple gaps to lead business transformation.

It’s crucial to push down roadblocks caused by uncritical thinking: In reality, many organizations are still operated with the traditional management discipline with a silo mentality with “command & control” style. If lacking critical thinking, people misjudge each other; pre-assumption or unconscious bias cause unhealthy conflicts, unfairness, create obstacles for defining the right problems or solving them smoothly. Across the organizational hierarchy, there are all sorts of roadblocks that cause business stagnation, such as out of date mindset, ineffective process, internal politics, bureaucracy, miscommunication across the organization, etc.

To push down such roadblocks, critical thinking about problems involves looking at the question first to determine whether it's true or false. The essence of critical thinking is careful deliberation, examination, and testing of assumptions, unconventional understanding, or consideration of opposing views. In order to build trust and avoid roadblocks on the way, it’s important to encourage positive mentality, constructive feedback to inspire constructive behaviors and drive radical changes.

It’s critical to break down the roadblocks caused by misunderstanding, misalignment, or mismanagement: Everything exists in a constant state of change and knowledge of an evolving thing must evolve with the thing. This means that to discover an opportunity, you should have sufficient knowledge, also keep updating knowledge to gain comprehensive understanding of issues handly. There's a gap between different functions or geographical divisions; there is misalignment of process, resource, talent in business management; there is illogic of business operation scenario.

Misalignment is caused by silo thinking, miscommunication, dysfunctional management behavior, or outdated practices, role conflict or differing priority, etc. All of which further causes business stagnation when different shareholders push the business to different directions. Thus, to transform roadblocks to capability blocks, cross-functional communication and collaboration are important for realizing achievable goals, enhancing a sense of purpose and mission, and shaping a strong corporate brand.

It’s important to overcome the roadblocks caused by homogeneous setting and variety of business management gaps: The homogeneous team setting will make team members more vulnerable to peer pressure, risk avoidance, making biased decisions and sticking to the comfort zone. Everyone grows up with different styles and the business cultures also shape their decision and behavior patterns. Homogeneous setting limits the organization's potential, decreases decision effectiveness because each one of us has limited cognitive threshold, knowledge or experience.

In proactive, usually “diversity in thought’ is the gold nugget to be found in sparking creativity. Generally speaking, the heterogeneous team with the cognitive difference is more innovative than the homogeneous group setting. People have different experiences and personality, therefore, they may have different ways to do things or provide feedback. A simple way initially to improve innovation in almost any organization is to simply broaden the audience, or expand the collective insight to overcome challenges, build competitive teams with complementary mindset, skillset and toolset to spur creative ideas and implement them smoothly.

Higher levels of employee engagement come from recognition, feedback, growth, and opportunity. When people are comfortable with the changes with a fitting mindset, robust processes, flexible structure, the business transformation will happen naturally. Businesses need to break down roadblocks, integrate capability blocks into core competency, so organization as a whole is able to avoid roadblocks, accelerate business performance significantly.
