The New Book “Digital Maturity” Introduction Chapter 8 From “Doing Digital” to “Being Digital”

Digital organizations need to keep evolving, renewing, and achieving the state of dynamic balance.

Digitalization is not equal to digital technology. At the high maturity level, organizations have to stretch out in every business dimension for driving the full-fledged digital transformation. Doing digital is perhaps about taking a few actions, but being digital is the fundamental shift from the mindset to behavior. There are a couple of evolutionary stages businesses have to experience in order to ride above the learning curve and move up the business maturity from “Doing Digital,” to “Being Digital.”

Reinforce ultra-modern digital mindsets: We live in the digital era which represents the rapid change; it requires that we move from mindset to mind flow. From fixed mind to growth mind; from thinking conventionally to mastering out-of-the-box thinking, thinking forward and thinking longer-term. In fact, the mindset is the most valuable thing to shape every progress, but also the root cause of all mankind problems. The great digital leaders and professionals are equipped with multidimensional thinking with high quality thought processes. Developing ultra-modern thinking is very hard work and does include a lot of deep thinking, observation, inquiries, unusual connections, experimenting, skills, and abilities. Collectively, it is critical to sustaining a balance of diversified viewpoints, forward-thinking, creativity, empathetic understanding, discipline, opportunities and risks, individualism and teamwork, democracy and unification, science and art; logic and intuition to reinforce digital thinking.

Cultivate great “digital taste”: Today’s digital organizations are hyperdynamic and people-centric. The high taste of digital means openness, responsiveness, innovativeness, and fluidity. Running a successful dynamic digital organization means that you have to be open to changes; be informative to act; be flexible to take alternative paths; be nimble to adapt; be intelligent to decide; be elastic to scale; be resilient to recover, and be innovative to thrive. In order to make a solid digital transformation, there are many seemly paradoxical, but indeed coherent business elements in running a high-effective digital organization. It requires taking a hybrid approach - combining the old way to do things and the new way to explore; take the balance of traditional hierarchical and flatter structure. Today’s working environment is multigenerational, multicultural, and multi-devicing, or to put simply, hyperdiverse. The high mature digital organizations are highly innovative, high quality, holistic, and delightful, with the high digital taste, which means free and progress.

Setting stages to keep digital flow: Digital means change, choice, fluidity, speed, and innovation. Organizations, like individuals, need to be in flow to operate smoothly and adapt to change with less friction, An organization can approach such a flow zone when people are ready for moving to a fluid structure, and digital leaders are eager to set stages and drive a frictionless, immersive, and relentless digital transformation. To adapt to the increasing pace of changes, it is important to create a dynamic business environment that encourages the utilization and knowledge flow. Because knowledge does not stand still, digital knowledge flow helps to unlock latent expertise, collaborate through communities with geographically-distributed teams, and arise the opportunity to analyze and reuse information they create to help people do their work and keep the business growth. Organizations should build a healthy working environment to encourage idea brainstorming and flow as well, set prioritization - select the ideas which can have a better opportunity to implement and maximize business value, build the competitive advantage, and stimulate the growth of business revenue and profit.

The digital paradigm shift is inevitable. Digital organizations need to keep evolving, renewing, and achieving the state of dynamic balance. Organizations today need to constantly improve the business and seeing change as an opportunity while keeping a holistic overview of the business. From the economic and organizational point of view, people are able to adapt themselves and their organization through a collaborative approach to understanding, learning, accelerating, and innovating.
