The New Book “Digital Maturity” Book Conclusion: Develop the strong Pillars to Build High-Mature Digital Organization

It is important to define the vision, discover the blind spots, identify unknowns, fill gaps, develop capabilities, build strong pillars to accelerate digital transformation effectively.

The digital transformation means that companies need to infuse digital into every aspect of the business, expand to every dimension of the organization, shape the enterprise-side digital capabilities and orchestrate a hyper-connected ecosystem which is interwoven with people, processes, technology, and develop the strong pillars to build the high-mature digital organization.

The Information & Technology pillar: IT as the strong pillar of the digital transformation means that IT should help their company achieve its business goals in any way possible, and even make impossible possible. IT as the digital pillar is actually more powerful, but lightweight. IT is a business “solutionary” to understand how the organization works and then give solutions that will increase the functionality to lower cost and, if applicable, increase output. This means a higher profit IT needs to be telling the business about opportunities and possibilities and that means IT needs to really understand the goals of the business and synchronize with business goals. Digital IT needs to be defined as a trusted business partner, to create a digital rhythm that establishes clarity around the top priorities of the company, and then review those priorities on a regular basis to ensure execution with consistency.

The change pillar: Changeability is the crucial pillar that keeps the business dynamic, energetic, competitive, and adaptive. It is important to assess the current state of changeability with key elements such as people, process, and technology. The goal of change and improvement should look beyond immediate problem resolution. The focus should include actions designed to sustain performance improvement and anchor change as a new opportunity. It is imperative to define the target change management capability via identifying the change gaps, sourcing the mix set of skills, identifying change agents, and tuning the business process to deliver the desired changeability. From change management perspective, it's about getting into actions in creative, positive, and productive ways that educate, support and celebrate every emotional step of the change curve and collective transformation journey.

Performance pillar: Performance management is not an isolated management discipline, running a business is fundamentally a strategy management and performance management continuum. Performance Management is not a bunch of paperwork, but a combination of management approaches leading to constantly improving business results. At the strategic level, performance management should connect multidisciplinary management dots to tell the full story with the business context and involve development, enablement, and enhancement. The performance measurement setting should focus on achieving the ultimate goals of the organization as a whole for the long term, not just individual, one team or one department performance only, to ensure the business as a whole is superior to the sum of pieces.

Consider digital organization as the self-organized but interlaced and hyper-connected ecosystem, it is important to define the vision, discover the blind spots, identify unknowns, fill gaps, develop capabilities, build strong pillars, and then consciously manage the business performance and accelerate digital transformation effectively.
