Visiting Panda's Home: Chengdu

Chengdu has built a strong reputation with its outstanding scientific research achievements, rich educational projects, and unique cultural charm.

In early April this year, I visited Chengdu, Sichuan province, the hometown of the giant panda. I saw dozens of big pandas who lived on their own campus, eating bamboo, playing around, or sleeping, very cute.

Pandas are one of the most popular animals in the world. Lots of tourists waited in line for hours just to meet their favorite pandas there for a couple of minutes.

History and development: The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding was established in 1987. It was established on the basis of raising, rescuing, and breeding giant pandas in the Chengdu Zoo. After years of development, the base has continuously expanded its scale and improved its scientific research and protection level. According to the characteristics of the panda theme, the overall project is divided into multiple areas. This is a world-famous giant panda protection base, scientific research breeding base, public education base, and educational tourism base.

In 2019, the base received more than 9 million tourists. The total area of the base is 3,570 acres, of which the expansion area is 2,535 acres. It fully follows and uses the original topography and landforms, and uses mountain gullies and streams to form a multi-level landscape belt of mountain valleys.

Population size: As of the end of 2020, the giant panda population has reached 215, which is the largest captive giant panda artificial breeding population in the world. As of 2023, there are 244 giant pandas in the scenic area, accounting for one-third of the global captive population.

Scientific research achievements: The park has solved the "three difficulties" in the process of raising giant pandas - "difficulty in birth, difficulty in raising, and difficulty in survival", and has overcome the difficulties of artificial semen collection, insemination and endocrine research technology, giant panda disease prevention and control technology, giant panda microsatellite technology, etc., and has achieved 75 scientific research results and 109 national patents.

International exchanges: It has carried out giant panda exchanges with 17 countries and regions, and has established long-term international research cooperation relations with 6 countries including the United States, Japan, and Germany, and has received more than 50 batches of heads of state and dignitaries.

Public education: In 2000, it took the lead in establishing a special education department in China. With the goal of progressive conservation education in knowledge, emotion and behavior, it has carried out a variety of conservation education projects in urban communities, universities, primary and secondary schools, kindergartens and rural areas, and has been rated as a "National Youth Science and Technology Education Base" and a "National Science Education Base".

Cultural Creativity: Cooperating with many enterprises, organizations and artists, it has achieved results in the fields of music, publishing, film and television, stage plays, cultural and art exhibitions, etc., such as launching the global tour of giant pandas, cooperating with pop Culture to develop the giant panda image, and cooperating with Tencent to establish the "Panda International Art Center".

I also visited another park in the suburb of Chengdu to see more pandas. Although it was the springtime, the weather was very hot in the area, so pandas slept a lot during the day. The overall environment is good as big pandas are very comfortable living there.

Chengdu has become an important window for global giant panda protection, and Chengdu has built a strong reputation with its outstanding scientific research achievements, rich educational projects, and unique cultural charm.
