Don’t Get It Wrong

When the lights come back and the dawn rolls in, we’ll see how much we’ve carried on—Remember this, whatever else you do: Don’t get it wrong.

I leave the porch light flashing

Though the road is dark and long.

There’s a thousand ways to say it,

But one small thing I know:

If the night gets loud around you,

If you’re tired of holding on,

Take a moment and listen to the nature clearly—

You were never here alone, really.

Don’t get it wrong,

don’t read me sideways,

Even when the words come out all wrong.

I may lose my way through all the noise,

But you’ve been in my mind all along.

When the lights go out and the doubt rolls in,

When you’re sure that everything needs to be all right.

Remember this, whatever else you do:

Don’t get it wrong.

We’ve both said things in anger,

Let the silence linger on.

As emotions can shake up the views,

we need to calm down to be objective.

So if misunderstanding keeps us at a distance,

If the hurt has lingered long,

Let the truth be something simple:

I still want to make this right.

Don’t get it wrong,

don’t misread me somehow.

Even when the words come out all wrong.

I may lose my way through all the noise,

But values have been in my mind all along.

When the lights go out and the doubt rolls in,

When you’re sure that everything is fine—

Remember this, whatever else you do:

Don’t get it wrong.

Not every quiet means speechless,

Not every tear means weak.

Some change just need a little time

To find the words and make them right.

Don’t get it wrong, I’m still beside you,

Even when the road feels far too long.

Through every transformation and every change,

There’s a place where we belong.

When the lights come back and the dawn rolls in,

We’ll see how much we’ve carried on—

Remember this, whatever else you do:

Don’t get it wrong.
