Digital Innovation Credos

Innovation is a discipline that, if understood fully, read more like a blueprint playbook than science fiction.

Digital is the age of innovation. Digital innovation has a broader spectrum with hybrid nature, it is the incremental improvement- radical innovation continuum. To improve innovation success rate, organizations should follow the digital principles, fine-tune processes, identify innovation leaders and champions, understand innovation paradoxes, and well-set innovation measurement. Here is a set of digital innovation credos.

The foundation for innovation has to be grounded in the “vision” which is linked to “hope” and seeking justice or truth: Creativity is an innate thought process to create new ideas. Innovation is to transform novel ideas and achieve their business value. That means every innovation has its goals and every innovator has the vision to bring something new or solve some thorny issues. Creativity starts from within, the interaction between what is within us (the self), and how we project to the exterior world is the bridge to achieving wholeness. The constant negotiation between our essence and our projection is what leads to growth and human evolution. Therefore, innovation leaders need to listen, convey, inspire, motivate, bring in people to share the vision, inspire the mission, communicate the ideas, advocate people-centricity.

An enriched innovation ecosystem enables systematic innovation management. An Innovation Ecosystem is a systematic innovation methodological environment or a sort of "professional philosophy" for innovation. Therefore, innovation needs to have a playbook, it starts with innovation strategy that defines "WHAT does the organization innovate" or "where should it innovate" to support the overall strategy. Innovation Management System includes policies, structure, and program that innovation managers can use to drive innovation. An effective 'innovation system' is capable of supporting both widespread incremental innovation in products/services and ways of working as well as the rarer 'step-change' innovation in products/services, working methodologies, business models, and market positioning.

Innovation is an optimal change, and it cannot be successful without grounding change management. Innovation is to improve a state of improvement (process, person, product etc). Not every change is innovation, but every innovation is about changing for better. Improvement itself and the desire to improve comes from within. It cannot be successful without grounding change management. A defined structure with embedded change mechanism is essential to managing innovation in a corporation, but there's no single structure that will work in every organization. You apply principles of approach and vary the resource and tool mix by the ever changing environment, to fine tune changes and innovations.

Build a heterogeneous team to close three gaps in innovation management - idea gaps, collaboration gaps, and implementation gaps: Companies must compete by creating corporate cultures and ‘labs’ with fertile ground for new ideas to sprout, grow, and mature, to achieve the business goals.  The multidisciplinary, team-based approach taps into the collective genius of innovators who can think and do things differently. Organizations can bridge idea gaps, collaboration gaps, and innovation implementation gaps via building a suitable and hybrid environment for stimulating creativity, encouraging originality, and measuring innovation effectively.  

You cannot make omelets without breaking some eggs. You cannot be truly innovative without breaking some outdated rules: Creativity is about thinking out-of-the-box. By nature of creativity, it’s about discovering the new way to do things, and it often means to break the old rules or the “old way to do things.” Rule-breaking or rule-making demands insight, understanding, courage, patience, persistence, and risk tolerance, among other things. On the other side, it needs to set the updated principles for guiding innovation practices, otherwise, it could be a lack of focus, and decrease the success rate of innovation, or dilute the business value it can achieve. That means, there is the time to break the outdated rules, there is the time to bend the rules, and there is the time to set new rules. The right set of ‘rules’ is not for limiting your imagination, but for framing the system to identify opportunities and mitigate risks and make collective progress.

Innovation shouldn’t be serendipity. A clear vision and a handy roadmap can help to “keep the ends in mind,” and take the innovation journey with faster speed. If you look at the history of market disruptions, they almost always deliver some combination of the benefits of affordability, convenience, and ease-of-use compared to existing solutions. The motivational innovation credos, robust processes, systems, and tools that enable any entity to generate winning concepts for innovation management on the consistent basis, is the prerequisite for sustaining digital business advantage and growth. It is imperative to build a corporate culture to renew creativity energy and it needs a system approach to running a balanced innovation portfolio for building innovation strength in your organization continually.
