Digitizing IT by "Pushing its Limit"

IT leaders shouldn’t classify creativity and logic in two completely different disciplines, they are interconnected and multidisciplinary.

Due to the changing nature of technology and overwhelming growth of information, IT organization has to continue to re-imagine and reshuffle itself for adapting to changes, reaching high performance and maximizing the full potential of the business. Forward-looking IT organizations have to proactively partner with the business, experiment, learn, explore and discover a better way to reinvent IT organization and explore the" art of possibility."

Push the IT systems boundaries: A system has to be of interest to us on the basis of a certain purpose. IT is a business system which has an emergent property and interacting components for enabling business strategy and providing business insight to proactively catalyze changes. Each function in the enterprise acts as a system which helps to fulfill the purpose of the entire company. Various people are influenced by the system assets; the “system of interest” is defined to establish the boundary and the properties that interact with the environment for achieving its purpose. Thus, what can be unifying is to look at each function in the enterprise as a system and discover a unified meanings of looking at the essence. This would improve cross-functional communication and collaboration. Keep in mind though, the digital boundaries are not shape lines, they are fluid for adapting to changes. To reshuffle IT for getting digital ready, IT leaders need to push the IT system boundary, permeate IT into every aspect of the business, understand the struggles of company by understanding the business beyond IT. IT needs to shift from “fixing things broken” in a reactive way to “building business capabilities” proactively. Nowadays, IT staff needs to be versatile, as digital responsibilities overlap each other. Group of people can and do often change from one set of responsibilities to another one. IT is no longer just a support function, but the growth engine of the high performance digital business.

Enforce virtuous Change Management cycle: The speed of change is accelerating. IT faces an unprecedented opportunity to refine its reputation as a change agent, also needs to take more responsibilities as a true business partner. Change Management is a journey, often goes hand-in-hand with strategy management. CIOs have to get the IT change agenda ready and enforce a virtuous Change Management cycle. Well planned Change Management with a clear vision (why do you want to change) and comprehensible understanding (what to change) derails good or even great intentions. Riding ahead of the change curve takes both principles and practices. It’s also crucial to identify the gaps, source appropriate skills, and develop the target state change management capability. Change is never for its own sake, Change Management shouldn’t be a conundrum. To make change sustain, the important thing is "end-to-end" performance. Digital IT organization with strong changeability is an environment of growth, the right mix of order and chaos; creativity and standardization, change and stability, problems and solutions, etc. By enforcing a virtuous cycle, Change Management can become an enjoyable voyage leading to organizational viability, relevance, and long-term prosperity.

Inject novelty into the culture of the organization: Highly innovative organization is to create organizations in which creativity is a significant part of business culture. To build a culture of customer-centricity, IT must be willing to take constructive criticism from both internal and external customers and turn the constructive criticism into opportunities for sparking creative ideas and catalyzing innovation. IT leaders can make a significant impact on the business culture and get really creative on how they architect digital transformation and implement changes, to ensure that IT is strategically positioned to drive business innovation and apply creative thinking to solve problems and achieve ultimate business goals. Creativity and process often go together. IT empowers business users with digital platforms and tools, inject novelty into the culture of the organization, and improve the business flexibility in response to unpredictable and unanticipated circumstances. Highly engaging work forces are highly interested in the work, deriving meaning from the work being performed, and performing the work in a creative and harmonious environment.

The businesses need innovation silver lining from specific tools rising to an overall problem-solving system environment. IT leaders shouldn’t classify creativity and logic in two completely different disciplines, they are interconnected and multidisciplinary. Companies need to proactively evolve and develop a vibrant innovation ecosystem in which IT is the linchpin so that businesses can thrive and reach the next level of innovation maturity.
