Unfilled

Organizations encounter more risks than ever, lack risk awareness creates more blind spots uncovered and gaps unfilled.

"Digital Master” is a series of guidebooks (28 + books) to perceive the multi-faceted impact digital is making to the businesses and society, help forward-thinking organizations navigate through the journey in a systematic way, and avoid “rogue digital.” It perceives the emergent trends of digital leadership, provides advice on how to run a digital organization to unleash its full potential and improve agility, maturity, and provide insight about Change Management. It also instructs the digital workforce on how to shape a game-changing digital mindset and build the right set of digital capabilities to compete for the future. Here is a set of “Unfilled” quotes in “Digital Master.”

One of the problems with views in the enterprise either via management or governance lens today is that they are not holistic. The lack of GRC awareness and holism creates blind spots uncovered, and gaps unfilled.

Risk awareness is a mindset to deal with today’s VUCA –Velocity, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity, new normal smoothly. Poor decision-making that lack of risk awareness creates more blind spots uncovered and gaps unfilled.

Organizations encounter more risks than ever, lack risk awareness creates more blind spots uncovered and gaps unfilled.

Technically, most of today’s risk management is reserved for huge and costly endeavors. The problem with this is that lack of risk awareness creates more blind spots uncovered and gaps unfilled.

Organizations encounter more risks than ever due to over-complex business dynamics. Lacking risk awareness creates more blind spots uncovered and gaps unfilled; lack of risk appetite

Harnessing Creative Intelligence

Organizations need diversity of characters, mindsets, skills, personalities, talent, and experience to be innovative.
As the digitized world becomes hyper-connected, over-complex and interdependent, business leaders and professionals need to learn how to think differently and do things in alternative ways. Creativity can lubricate idea flows and leads innovative problem solving. In the organizational setting, digital variety is a switch to turn on creativity, force you to confront fresh ideas and possibly embrace new concepts that you may have never imagined, consciously leverage different thought processes and following thinking tools to develop creative intelligence.

Intellectual association: We get innumerable thoughts every moment, they pass unconsciously, and sometimes, those thoughts trigger other thoughts to create new ideas or fresh insights. Such intellectual association seems to be more perceptually based, related to the "aha" phenomenon, and can be below conscious awareness. Cognitively, our minds are conditioned based on our own belief systems, education, and past happenings. To connect wide dots for triggering creativity and improve perception intelligence, do not always follow conventional wisdom or preconceived opinions, become an independent thinker and fast learner, continue updating knowledge and gaining fresh insight.

All living beings are creative, creativity could be a fountain flowing out of you, it could also fluctuate, seems to disappear at times, get blocked, or sparkle in abundance and flow out. Collectively, silos are reservoirs for homogeneous thinking, stifle creativity and limit imagination of the organization. Heterogeneous groups with diverse thought processes, cross-cultural, cross generational backgrounds, various experiences, etc, can harness intellectual association, nurture a learning culture, assimilate diversity, and amplify creativity effects.

Perspective shifting: With unprecedented uncertainty and complexity, to solve problems creatively, knowledge is no doubt important but more than that is complete awareness of what is happening in the context from a system perspective, as well as understanding multifaceted digital reality. We all have walked in the shoes and seen the problem or situation from the others’ point of view. A holistic perspective can fix the misperception by exploring multiple thought processes and listening to different viewpoints. Digital leaders and professionals have to really dig beneath the superficial layer, shift perspectives, see around the corner and transcend the interdisciplinary knowledge, to get to the heart of the matter.

Opposite reasoning: we shift the world from black & white to embrace the full color spectrum. Our beliefs are developed from what we see, hear and experience growing up. Some of these beliefs develop from our misinterpretation of what we see, hear and experience. Unfortunately, some perceptions are outdated, the learned beliefs are oftentimes limiting our mind, forming our biases or blind us from seeing the other side of the coin. It’s important to craft mindsets with thinking processes that hold onto its natural connectivity while being prepared to connect the dots even in the opposite direction should make sense.

Challenge, debate, learn the nature of each other through the aspect of civil and respectful dialog. Too often, we operate on autopilot, with our thoughts, emotions, and decisions coming from a subconscious level - accurate or not. As the unique ability to work and produce fresh ideas, creativity requires a certain degree of independence and mental balance, the traits and skills, the proper psychological level of inner security, and the neurodiversity to even make opposite reasoning. This helps in acknowledging different or contrasting views and shares the thoughts as to how it can address the issue under consideration without berating anyone for their views, in order to solve it creatively.

Organizations need diversity of characters, mindsets, skills, personalities, talent, and experience to be innovative. The business leaders do not focus on hierarchy but on building great teams to foster creativity, openness, achievement, and leverage different thinking tools to develop mental strength and improve creative intelligence.

"Unity" Quotes & Thoughts

The digital management processes should be developed to help communicate objects and concepts smoothly and drive changes via the "pulling" factor and anticipating with unity.

"Digital Master” is a series of guidebooks (28 + books) to perceive the multi-faceted impact digital is making to the businesses and society, help forward-thinking organizations navigate through the journey in a systematic way, and avoid “rogue digital.”

It perceives the emergent trends of digital leadership, provides advice on how to run a digital organization to unleash its full potential and improve agility, maturity, and provide insight about Change Management. It also instructs the digital workforce on how to shape a game-changing digital mindset and build the right set of digital capabilities to compete for the future. Here is a set of “Unity” (iii) quotes in “Digital Master.”

It's important to create the right culture that fits both the organization and the employees is hence important. There are several elements that make the process faster, such as; trust, mutual respect, sense of unity, and mutual gain.

The best visionary leaders embrace the full spectrum of colors, respect the diversified point of view, move energy to a higher level by offering a clear vision of what is possible. The essence of the beautiful thing is unity in variety.

The wholeness comprises various media that are each functionally contrary to the unitive, fluid and seamless nature of the whole.

Don't judge anything until you can engage with the flow, then look more closely at the mechanisms that are creating the flow, and appreciate the diversity in unity.

The digital management processes should be developed to help communicate objects and concepts smoothly and drive changes via the "pulling" factor and anticipating with unity.

Strategic Choreography via Business Architecture

Organizations need to continue optimizing Business Architecture as an important tool to make strategic alignment, for deliberating, sustaining, and monitoring balance between knowing where you've been, where you are, and where you want to go and drive transformative change effortlessly.
Business Architecture plays an important role in designing and managing future businesses that can respond to multidimensional factors impacting business model, business operations, and business reputation.

It is a series of methods and industry-standard practices to describe what you do, why, how, where, and who derives or how to do it. Business architecture can be very valuable for performing a wide array of tasks including strategic positioning, process optimization, and keeping the priorities in balance.

Strategic-choreography: Business Architecture is a great strategic planning tool for business leaders to gain a systematic understanding of how business relationships, market dynamics, and the organizational interrelationship between people and process, and orchestrate an ever evolving business ecosystem. It helps to leverage multi-choices of strategy, gain a long term strategic-choreographic perspective, understand business complexity and its dynamic ecosystem, not just a snapshot of the current business circumstances. With unprecedented uncertainty and high velocity of the business ecosystem, Business Architecture cannot be defined with a fixed set of deliverables such as value chains, functions, etc, but a strategic communication tool to ensure all related parties are on the same page and the strategy execution are on the right track to deliver better than expected business results.

Business Architecture is the visualization of the organization strategy, competences and operation layers and how they fit together. It is a practical tool to explore macro-environment, navigate critical business activities, predict opportunities and risks ahead, estimate the magnitude of the impact of events which may occur in strategic/operational plans, and deal with the variety of complexity effectively. It enables business leaders and managers to take a wide look around at what's going on outside the organization- the business ecosystem and how it might affect the organization, identifying opportunities and threats. And it helps to define the direction for organizations and build a roadmap of how an organization executes the strategy via top-down approach.

Process optimization and governance:
Enterprise becomes more complex than ever, Basic Business Architecture is a high level diagram describing the key business capabilities and flows, process, ontology, etc. Processes underpin business capability, Business Architecture should have the capability to transform the manual process and the business requirement to process design and process governance. The broader the reach of the business process, the more diffuse the truth becomes, and the more important it is to commit the time and energy required to reach a holistic view of the process in order to improve its effectiveness and efficiency.

Business Architecture as an effective tool enables process optimization and governance. Visual modeling languages can be used to represent business processes. The graphical representation of business process information has proven effective for presenting it to business stakeholders, etc. Enforcing mutual respects between organizational design and business process management can lead to effective business transformation. With BA as an effective process optimization tool, governance process/mechanism can be embedded into business processes and governance practices should be shared cross-enterprise collaboratively.

Prioritization in balance: There are too many things happening in the business today, there are both old problems and emergent issues, rising opportunities and hidden risks, etc. There is no way to create a definitive prioritized list without more business context. The business architecture equivalent takes a look at balancing the business priorities and forcing conversations that are otherwise difficult to have. It’s an important tool to help understand the core business of your enterprise and the problem to solve, set the priority to focus on things matter, leverage repeatable processes, and master expectation management.

A business architecture has to accommodate the fact that all organizations operate simultaneously as open and closed systems. It helps to facilitate the strategic communications within the business executives, engage employees by co-setting their work goals, and to highlight changes with standardization, coherence, and visualization of business improvement initiatives. It’s an effective tool to sustain a balance of diversified viewpoints, science and art, analysis and synthesis, democracy and unification; individualism and teamwork, and ride the tide of digital transformation.

All enterprises are designed to varying degrees of detail and with varying degrees of success, but it does not mean that they are architected seamlessly. It is important to reimagine the future of the digital business boldly, but make an objective assessment of the digital readiness carefully. Organizations need to continue optimizing Business Architecture as an important tool to make strategic alignment, for deliberating, sustaining, and monitoring balance between knowing where you've been, where you are, and where you want to go and drive transformative change effortlessly.

“Problem-Solving Master - Frame Problems Systematically and Solve Problems Creatively“: Interdisciplinarity

More often than not, solving a complex problem today is a multi-stepped process and a multi-stage solution that includes both problem resolution and solution implementation.

The purpose of “Problem-Solving Master - Frame Problems Systematically and Solve Problems Creatively“ is to throw some light on how to understand, frame, and solve today’s multilayer, interdependent, and over-complex business problems effortlessly.

Digital leaders and professionals should self-aware of their role in problems, show professional maturity, and develop a good reputation as the problem-solver.

Interdisciplinary Solutions

Interdisciplinary With unprecedented complexity and uncertainty, problem-solving today often has a very wide scope, methodologies, processes and practices will not be simple. It takes an interdisciplinary approach to peel back the layers to discover the root causes, and solve them in the right way. All stages must be handled with attention and proficiency to ensure long-term success. At the business scope, as resources and time are limited, it’s critical to develop..

Interdisciplinary Problem Prevention Preventing problems is superior to fixing problems for us to step into the future confidently, understand talent with empathy and change the world effortlessly.A "problem" is an opportunity waiting to happen. There are criteria that characterize good and bad statements of problems and opportunities. Any progressive change is technically a sort of opportunity management and problem-solving scenario.

Interdisciplinary ProblemSolving The problem-solving masters are artistic scientists who can use their logic and intuition fluently, to solve problems systematically. They are also scientific artists who can connect unusual dots, paint unique colors to figure out different ways to solve problems creatively. The digital world is dynamic, nonlinear, uncertain, and volatile, emergence becomes apparent, for adapting to changes. Technically, running a business is an iterative problem-solving..

Intrinsic problems & solutions Innovative problem-solvers enjoy understanding a variety of complexity, appreciate the interaction and interrelationship dynamic, guide people through it; find common ground and initiate dialogues, apply multifaceted logic to solve problems creatively. Business is complex with many moving parts, to deal with today’s multi-logical situation in digital dynamic requires multiple valid viewpoints.

Innovative and intelligent Problem-Solving More often than not, solving a complex problem today is a multi-stepped process and a multi-stage solution that includes both problem resolution and solution implementation. In the real world, due to hyper complexity and unprecedented uncertainty, problem-solving in the majority of organizations today is woefully inadequate, most people usually never question what is exactly the problem because "it's the way things should be."

A Set of "Unbiased" Quotes

Being objective means you are not influenced by personal feelings, interpretations, or prejudice; but make judgments or decisions based on unbiased fact, dispassionate examination, and objective opinions.

Being objective means you are not influenced by personal feelings, interpretations, or prejudice; but make judgment or decisions based on unbiased fact, dispassionate examination, and an objective opinion.

Impartial means adjective neutral, objective, detached, just, fair, equal, open-minded, equitable, disinterested, unbiased, even-handed, nonpartisan, unprejudiced, without fear or favor. It is the opposite of biases and stereotyping.

The digital landscape has many dimensions technically, philosophically, psychologically, and sociologically, it’s important to apply critical thinking, step out of what you are trying to understand, remove the “old box” shaped via conventional wisdom or group thinking, learn to be impartial, open-minded, unbiased, and take a multidisciplinary approach to solve problems effectively.

To frame the right problems, it’s important to listen to a wide range of opinions and multidimensional viewpoints in order to make sound judgments based on unbiased fact.

Only a balanced board with an unbiased view can make tough decisions, be objective, and lead progressively with accelerated speed.

Being objective means you are not influenced by personal feelings, interpretations, or prejudice; but make judgments or decisions based on unbiased fact, dispassionate examination, and objective opinions.

To be objective, you must step out of what they are trying to understand, zoom out in order to capture the holistic picture, learn to be impartial which means adjective neutral, objective, detached, just, fair, equal, open-minded, equitable, disinterested, unbiased, even-handed, nonpartisan, unprejudiced, without fear or favor.

Stucky Factors of Business Ineffectiveness

Forward looking leaders have better sense to capture business trends, gain the insight to understand things holistically; and move energy to a higher level by offering a clear vision of what is possible and trendsetting for making the future brighter and unlocking performance quantitatively.

Organizations rise and fall, not on the quantum of plans and resources, but on the capabilities to manage, lead, yet most important to execute. Business leaders need to gain a complete awareness of organizational intricacies-what is happening in the business, not just based on the visual part on the surface, but also about knowing how-underneath to improve business maturity. It’s also crucial to understand the barriers to change and potential pitfalls on the way to strategy execution by clarifying the vision, gaining a systematic understanding of people dynamics, resource alignment, and technological impact.

Stuck in corporate bureaucracy:
Many organizations that have an overly restrictive hierarchy are inflexible, silo, command & control, and often get stuck at the low level of organizational maturity. To scrutinize the root causes of bureaucracy, missing synergy, or diagnose the symptom of dysfunctional business systems/processes, etc, the business management needs to check: In which circumstances the productivity is low and synergy is missing; in which circumstances, people are not working via the system to solve the real problems but play the system to stifle innovation or build “comfort zones” and create friction to changes, etc.

Bureaucracy causes stagnation, outdated rules will stop the business from moving forward with accelerated speed. Organizations, like individuals, need to be in flow to operate smoothly. Debureaucratization is a management practice that helps the organization to step out of the “comfort zone,” battle bureaucracy, eliminate silos, have managers of respective functions to interact in a structural setting on a consistent base, allow the business units to reach across the aisles and work closely with each other to enforce cross-functional communication, participation and relationship building and accelerate business speed.

Confusion, misunderstanding, unable to bond to a common organizational goal/cause: Many organizations get stuck at the daily “busyness,” but ignoring the long term strategic goals setting. The effective business logic is: defining a set of strategic goals, making links to business strategy alignment, back to departmental outputs and team/individual work outputs, then the linkage between strategic and operational can be relatively transparent. Streamline and enforce scenario planning, program life cycles, business initiation, requirements management, risk management, resource management, governance (progress, finance, quality and change), with comprehensive dashboard reporting and value tracking.

Setting and achieving the S.M.A.R.T goals is the critical step in strategy execution. How do you expect people to implement the “SMART” goals they do not know or they have not participated in formulating or setting? Do not think of a “SMART” goal as a management mechanism only, ensure having a goal that has the business purpose first. In order to set and achieve smart goals, all the people involved in implementing them need to be involved. The relevant goal classification and clarity helps the leadership team keep a pulse on progress and enable the execution team to understand what needs to be done by setting the right priority, and evolving the emerging business properties with speed, to steer the business in the right direction without getting lost.

Unpredictable business performance:
It is no surprise that there is a tension between “old and new,” from the business model, mindset, process or practice perspectives. Assessing the performance of new ways to do things perhaps challenges because of unpredictability or unrepeatativeness. But innovation would be rewarding as it could significantly unlock performance. Even though you couldn’t predict anything beforehand, you can always imagine different scenarios based on “lessons learned” with many experiences involved in current or in the past. The other dangerous part of performance measurement is when the performance system is connected with the motivation system on an operational level, but disconnected from the strategy management. So people keep their hands busy, but the company as a whole perhaps goes nowhere. It is important to define the strategic level performance indicators which take into consideration the possible implication on the organization as a whole and the future orientation.

Performance Management gets "stuck" when business leaders or managers -the people in charge get "stuck." Most organizations fail to manage performance effectively because they only focus on assessing past performance, not future performance. The incomplete assessment of measurement variables would also mislead the management making ineffective decisions or focus on short-term business results only. A robust performance management system needs to be designed with end users in mind, more future oriented, output driven, not process-driven, etc. The purpose of managing and improving performance predictability, is about setting performance metrics to evaluate the status of strategy management, making objective assessments of business results, and understanding performance measurement contextually. The good measures motivate teams to achieve more but the bad measurement perhaps enforces silo thinking and distracts the business management from achieving the ultimate goals.

The digital era is full of uncertainty, velocity, complexity, and ambiguity, many business changes or transformational efforts are symptomatic of not having a comprehensive understanding and taking a stepwise approach to managing a seamless transformation. Forward looking leaders have better sense to capture business trends, gain the insight to understand things holistically; and move energy to a higher level by offering a clear vision of what is possible and trendsetting for making the future brighter and unlocking performance quantitatively

“Change Insight” Briefing: Innate-change-cycle

Organizational change management today is not just about a few spontaneous businesses initiatives for reacting to business dynamics, but structured and well-planned efforts to make continuous improvement.

Change is inevitable, organizational change has become a common practice within an organization, but too often changes are made as a reaction to outer impulses, crisis, and demands. This is the bureaucracy’s way of meeting the challenges. A digital transformation is achieved via dynamic Strategy-Execution-Change lifecycle management, although it is not all linear steps, but an iterative, ongoing and upgoing change continuum.

The purpose of the book “Change Insight” is to dig deeper to analyze the psychology behind changes and handle problems and changes at the level of the mindset, and explore people-centric change management philosophy and practices.

             Innate-change-cycle

Organizational Multi-faceted Change Cycles to Get Digital ready Streamlining and accelerating organizational multi-faceted change cycles will make a significant impact on business and its ecosystem, to make a seamless digital paradigm shift.Digital organization is dynamic and complex, the degree of business responsiveness depends on how organizational subsystems interact with each other, and those interactions could be nonlinear, technical, informational, or human.

Change with a Full Cycle of “Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, and Transforming” Communication, exemplification, and amplification of best practices are all crucial steps for a company to move from one level to another level of change maturity. The digital era upon us is all about the increasing pace of changes, technology-driven disruptions, and "always-on" businesses with blurred functional, business, or industry territories. Going digital is about breaking down silos, applying the holistic digital management discipline to...

Improve Business Balance and Growth Cycle Horizontally and Vertically The whole business ecosystem needs to communicate, negotiate, reciprocate, and cooperate with each other to harness change and improve the business balance and growth cycle both horizontally and vertically.Rapid change, complexity, and uncertainty are the new normal, digital organizations have to self-adapt and self-renew itself, be able to reconfigure the organizational structure, and change their own behaviors for improving their responsiveness...

Uncover Logic and Consequence of Change Management Organizational change management today is not just about a few spontaneous businesses initiatives for reacting to business dynamics, but structured and well-planned efforts to make continuous improvement. Digital means hyper-connectivity, uncertainty, and ambiguity. Change is inevitable, closer to reality is that change is continuously happening in such a dynamic environment of a company.

Lift the business up to the Hyper-cycle of Digital Transformation From doing digital to being digital needs to take a lot of brainstorming, thought-out planning, and structural actions. Change is inevitable, organizational change has become a common practice. "Change" can be a somewhat mechanical implementation of new or different ways of doing something while the digital transformation is more likely to be a sweeping approach to altering a system or parts of it. Running a digital business is complex because all...

The interesting Quote of "Unsure"

Resistance to change is often because people are unsure of what success will look like after the big change.

"Digital Master” is a series of guidebooks (28+ books) to perceive the multi-faceted impact digital is making to the businesses and society, help forward-thinking organizations navigate through the journey in a systematic way, and avoid “rogue digital.”

Here is a set of ”unsure” quotes in “Digital Master.”

Humility is not about being unsure or afraid to try new ways to do things. Rather, it speaks to a person’s openness to feedback, learning agility and continuous improvement.

Resistance to change is often because people are unsure of what success will look like after the big change.

Decision-making is difficult due to various reasons such as uncertainty and ambiguity of business circumstances, failure of failures, unsure about priority, unconscious bias, lack of knowledge or profound thinking.

Leaders are intrinsically motivated. You feel weak when you are unsure of a situation or an issue. When that is the case, ask the questions that help you gain a greater understanding of the situation or issue.

That old Socratic thing about making you unsure where previously you were so certain, and by making you think for yourself build your independence for them.

The Board of Director’s role is to set the boundaries: Some may call it the risk appetite and risk tolerance levels, and innovation has risks because it comes with the cost and unsure outcomes.

Allowing Intelligent Problem-Solving

Most organizations are information rich, but insight poor. The dynamic digital organization needs to be creative to produce ideas; be persuasive to advocate the ideas; be logical enough to implement it, guide a team and "make it happen,"

With exponential growth of data, a smart organization has the ability to manage information effectively for making on-time decisions, provide context-based suggestions and recommendations for adapting to the rapid changes and frequent disruptions. Information based reasoning is about "why," you should care about the "why" because it will tell you tomorrow’s "what." Information smart is not about getting to a point of certainty, but rather, it’s about being used as a tool for reducing uncertainty in business. Hi-Performance information based intelligence should accomplish all of the following:

Allow deep and thorough information based analysis: Contemporary organizations spend a significant portion of their time and resources on processing one of the most invaluable assets of the business - data and transform it into information on a user digestible and understandable level for improving decision effectiveness. Information has something to do with products of rectification and ramifications. The skillful informants can identify how information is associated with the valued tangibles of businesses; products and resources; or how to leverage information to solve critical business problems; as well as how new information is generated. The critical phase when information is created is when decision-makers frame problems, or more exactly when they discover problem structures, the rest of the time they generate either new/redundant data and/or knowledge updates.

Information pulse is like the “heartbeat” of the enterprise, it has to run at the right speed for keeping the organization circling smoothly, staying healthy and energetic. Business Intelligence refers to computer-based techniques used in spotting, digging-out, and analyzing business data, to achieve business value. A smart organization always looks for opportunities across business to increase the usage of the emerging technologies and abundant information which allows you to build an actionable insight as to how to move from one level to the other. It applies to the context and environment in which decisions are made; it can also trigger a sense of confidence, confirmation, validation, verification. The business foresight or customer insight captured from information enables the business management to dig into the root causes of the problem and solve it effectively.

Allow people to ask interesting questions and expect to get information based answers:
Asking questions is crucial to learning and asking the right question at the right time to the right person for the right information is an important step in effective problem solving. There is a strategic value of understanding the problem and being able to ask open-ended questions that evoke a response to enlighten or illustrate specific issues or topics. The key point is to use the right questions to capture good feedback, slow down the analysis and decision-making processes by acquiring all the necessary information to make correct decisions.

Intellectuals question the established order, involving a lot of mental "doing" = thinking, comparing, concluding, reasoning and planning. Asking questions is a non offending way of making the point by understanding the point of view of another side. Smart people ask tough questions, get updated information and multiple perspectives about the problems, learn about the subject inside-out, and then apply their leadership qualities and skills to resolve the situation effectively. They listen, ask tough questions and get invaluable feedback. It’s the attitude, the trust, and it’s the soft science of communication embedded with hard science of problem-solving capability.

Allow hybrid problem-solving:
“Creanalytics'' is the combination of two words “Creativity” and “Analytics.” In reality, problem-solving in the majority of organizations today is woefully inadequate. Many problems are complex because you need to take the interdisciplinary approach to both understand the real problem and take the step-wise approach to solve them. Thus, “creanalytics'' is an important, hybrid, or recombinant capability for today’s high professionals to overcome the challenge. Almost every job needs some level of analytics and creativity in modern society. as well. You need to master them both via practicing whole brain thinking and structural problem-solving.

In practice, often, events and patterns are observed on the surface, and then the action is taken to fix the symptom, but that is too early. How do you define the right problem, the complexity level of problems, and how can you solve them in better ways? Band-aids/quick fixes is simply not enough. The cure comes from within the organization- the collective attitude and capability. To advance and be innovative, your mind must set free to create the new ideas that arise from identifying and challenging assumptions and then generating more possibilities to solve problems effectively.

Most organizations are information rich, but insight poor. The dynamic digital organization needs to be creative to produce ideas; be persuasive to advocate the ideas; be logical enough to implement it, guide a team and "make it happen," be simplified and elaborated in a well-organized effort for adapting to emergent business changes in its own functions, structures, and behaviors, and be creative to lead changes and catalyze progression.

Integration & Intensity Highlight of “Digital Maturity: Take a Journey of a Thousand Miles from Functioning to Delight”

The purpose of the book “Digital Maturity: Take a Journey of a Thousand Miles from Functioning to Delight” is to envision the future of the business, articulate the very characteristics of digital organizations; reimagine the interdisciplinary and hyperconnected digital ecosystem; fine-tune processes and structures of the digital business; develop the best and next practices to charter the digital paradigm shift seamlessly; leverage information & technology as the linchpin of the digitalization; take a holistic approach to measure digitization effort; avoid pitfalls and barriers on the way; and make a leap from doing digital to being digital effortlessly.

Digital makes a significant impact on every aspect of the business from people, process to technology, both horizontally and vertically. It is like a gigantic puzzle with many misplaced pieces, you have to put them all in the right places to discover the real meaning and unleash its full potential. You cannot make a true digital paradigm shift without an in-depth understanding of the digital interconnectivity and embracing the multitude of digital maturity.

Integration & Intensity

Incorporating & Integrating We are experiencing the digital paradigm shift. Traditional management runs in silos; silos introduce lots of delays, waste, queues, gaps and bottlenecks. There are overly rigid processes, inflexible structures, and organizational pyramids which cause bureaucratic management redundancy. The digital organization can reach the stage of ripeness when it acts as an organic system which continues evolving and adapting, informative and innovative...

Innovation & Integration A new paradigm arises out of advanced mindsets, knowledge, and approach. It is transformational to “step outside” of the organizational system for having different perspectives to gain an in-depth understanding of the business dynamics, handle those “fuzzy business logic” skillfully. Nowadays enterprises are inherently and intensely complex, diverse, and ambiguous with unpredictable outcomes. There are unknown interactions and very high inner dynamics...

Innovation & Internalization Envision, communication, implementation, integration, and internalization are indispensable when you are on the ride of digital trajectory. The digital era upon us is full of uncertainty, velocity, complexity, and ambiguity. Compared to traditional companies like the mechanical system which keeps spinning, the digital organization is a living thing which needs to keep evolving and strike the delicate balance of growth and stability. Interdisciplinary....

Intensity The whole business ecosystem needs to communicate, negotiate, reciprocate, and cooperate with each other to harness transformative change. The organizational environment is full of uncertainty and ambiguity, business management has become an art out of necessity to address critical issues, handle conflicts, and leverage the emerging technologies to optimize underlying organizational functions and structures, give everyone a voice on how the...

Information & Integration Those organizations that have better integration maturity outperform their competitors and tend to be more responsive to increasing pace of changes and develop long-term business competency. Modern organization has its own sophistication- silo functions, the sea of data, and the pool of talents, etc. To run business as a holistic living thing rather than “the sum of pieces,” it’s important to “put things together, and optimize,” “process, integrate,...

Solving Problems via Authoritative, Competitive, Collaborative Ways

You can't always wait for the "best" solution to emerge. It is important to experiment, explore, engage, and create multiple pathways to solve problems.

With unprecedented complexity and uncertainty, problem-solving today often has a very wide scope, methodologies, processes and practices will not be simple. It takes an interdisciplinary approach to peel back the layers to discover the root causes, and solve them in the right way. All stages must be handled with attention and proficiency to ensure long-term success.

At the business scope, as resources and time are limited, it’s critical to develop an effective framework, set the right priority, assign talent, resources and time carefully and solve problems that really matter. Problem solving is both art and science. Here are authoritative, competitive and collaborative ways to solve problems.

Authoritative: Running business today is an iterative problem solving continuum. Within traditional hierarchical structures, mechanical command and control leadership and management mindsets and hierarchical structure appear to be the norm. Authoritative problem-solving perhaps makes sense as top business management diagnoses the root causes of crucial issues, authorizing the right talent to approach them smoothly. It is necessary in times of crisis when actually people are waiting for someone to take the front stage to solve serious problems, issue directions, and control the unfolding of the response. Discern the problem-solving style of the company by checking: Are all problems solved by the manager in the boardroom with the solution then given to the staff on the floor, or are staff on the floor involved and given a chance to offer their solution.

But being flexible is important, Over control perhaps stifles innovation. Control comes into play when one monitors the process to see it is reaching the desired vision which has a managerial element. If people only do what you're told and don't ask any questions, they could even become a part of the problem, rather than a solution. Keep in mind, command is a skill, not a right. It’s important to create a balancing act, enforce two way communication, collect feedback and solve problems smoothly.

Competitive: Competition, in and of itself, is not inherently bad. Competition between ideas and values stimulates creative problem-solving and drives social progress. High mature digital business can provide a more intensive and creative working environment to encourage healthy competition and get all the right people with the right capability in the right position to solve the right problems from right angles timely.

The real issue is the motivation or purpose behind the competition. The purpose of competition is to inspire creative thinking, and as leaders, you need to be more confident and conscious rather than threatened by growth minds or strong characters as more often than not, top talent can fix the problem in a premium way. Often time, either for the individuals or businesses, it is the energy behind the competition that matters. Good competition can catalyze innovation and progress, and embrace the open style for problem-solving -where all production floor suggestions are implemented.

Collaborative: Collaboration, teamwork, unity bring strength. The functional, geographical, or even industrial borders are blurred, people are encouraged to break down silos, seek out help, brainstorm fresh ideas, and co-solve existing or emerging business problems collaboratively. Digital leaders today must be able to foster a workplace that thrives on cross-functional communication, collaboration, and social interaction in building business competency and fostering cross-functional collaboration for complex problem solving.

A complementary team with differentiated competency always tried to be ahead of others but in a constructive way and not a destructive way to improve problem solving effectiveness. Initiate new conversations that galvanize inspiration and gain traction on a powerful theme of renewal and growth. It is easy to work alone and take the attitude of competition, but it is much more difficult to collaborate with different parties, even competitors to overcome common challenges. Collaboration becomes a whole lot easier if you give people time to hear what they have to say without constant distractions or unhealthy internal competitions.

You can't always wait for the "best" solution to emerge. It is important to experiment, explore, engage, and create multiple pathways to solve problems. Look at the problem from a different angle or understand the issues via multi-disciplinary lenses, solving problems really matter and solve them in the right way.

Innovative-Insight

Blogging is not about writing, but about thinking, brainstorming, innovating and sharing.

The “Future of CIO” Blog has reached 5 million page views with 7600+ blog postings in 59+ different categories of leadership, management, strategy, digitalization, change/talent, etc.

The “Digital Master” book series includes 28 books to share insight from the multidimensional digital lens and perceive the multi-faceted impact the digital era upon us is making to businesses and society. The content richness is not for its own sake, but to convey the vision and share the wisdom. Here is the weekly insight of digital leadership, IT Management, and Talent Management.

Initiatives Developing a compelling strategic business case which describes the initiative’s benefits and costs flow is especially critical when an initiative is difficult to monetize. Digital enterprises are inherently complicated nowadays, with rapid changes and fierce competitions, organizations have to continue to build new business capabilities and “keep the lights on” by taking business initiatives and making solid deliveries consistently.

InnateBoard The corporate board directors assume the dual role of guidance and governance steering, whilst leaving the day-to-day leadership/management processes and practices in the hands of the C-level executives and holding them accountable in achieving performance outcomes. Fundamentally, the corporate board’s responsibilities include taking control of the softer issues such as strategic thinking of GRC, making good policy, setting risk appetite, etc....

Interdisciplinary Digital management is fundamentally an iterative cycle to design, develop, scale and optimize business competency. The digital business today is not just working within the industry, but permeating a cross-ecosystem which is dynamic, continuous and interactive. An information-abundant, hyper-competitive economic environment makes the world more complex than ever, businesses can no longer perform better without deliberate planning and dedicated implementation.

Irrelevant, Inconsistent, Incoherent A viable digital organization can deliver impressive business outcomes and improve its performance by taking continuous digital practices to keep things relevant, consistent, coherent, improve manageability and develop business competencies. It is a continuously changing world with hyper-connected and interdependent “VUCA” new normal. No organizations across vertical sectors can afford to stick to its old ways of problem-solving.

Urgent “Delegate”: The decisions should be made for the whole team. The remedy is to question why it is urgent and dismantle that. Unfortunately, Urgent/Unimportant tasks are often political."Digital Master” is a series of guidebooks (28+ books) to perceive the multi-faceted impact digital is making to the businesses and society, help forward-thinking organizations navigate through the journey in a systematic way, and avoid “rogue digital.”

Blogging is not about writing, but about thinking about the new ideas; it’s not just about WHAT to say, but about WHY to say, and HOW to say it. It reflects the color and shade of your thought patterns, and it indicates the peaks and curves of your thinking waves. Unlike pure entertainment, quality and professional content takes time for digesting, contemplation and engaging, and therefore, it takes time to attract the "hungry minds" and the "deep souls." It’s the journey to amplify diverse voices and deepen digital footprints, and it's the way to harness your innovative spirit.

Business Levers to Lift Growth Cycle

By pulling the various business levers, you will get very great chances and opportunities to change your organization in many fields and lift up the organization to the next cycle of growth and maturity.

We are living in a complex world where inventions, developments, and conflicts are continuously changing and that makes it impossible to have a complete knowledge and understanding of many issues facing the business today.

A digital organization as a dynamic business ecosystem can bring greater awareness of intricacies and the systemic value, increase technological touches, streamline resource alignment, practice information power, optimize business processes, and pull the variety of business levers to drive transformative changes and get digital ready.

Pull the structure lever to enforce business flexibility:
The traditional pyramidal structured organization brings up a certain level of efficiency, but an overly rigid hierarchy enforces silo and stifles information/idea flow. To be a highly functional and adaptive system, the hierarchy must balance freedom and responsibilities, and strike the delicate balance between solid and flow. Forward-looking organizations experiment with different types of organizational structures and functional layout. There must be enough central control to achieve coordination toward the large-system goals and enough autonomy to keep all subsystems functioning, flourishing, and coordinating. The management needs to check up: Does the chain of communication flow frictionlessly, or does it stop at one level? Can the organizational official structure and unofficial structure co-exist antagonistically or harmoniously? Are cross-functional teams able to handle all value-adding steps in the whole flow of work, co-develop solutions to complex problems and build a unique set of business capabilities? Etc.

To expedite business performance, pull the structural lever, also look at all key business elements, including the human element, as an integrated system and functions as an organic living thing. Individual work and group work cannot be done as a segregated form but within a framework of an entire business ecosystem including policies, systems, processes, culture, and customers, etc. Being intentional about tuning organizational structures, developing processes that encourage cross-functional collaboration and enforcing business flexibility, construct and enact a people-centric organization.

Use IT as a lever to achieving strategic business goals: Nowadays information technology is a competitive advantage. Information comes from the analysis of fast-growing data, technology allows for the capture, manipulation, and presentation of information. In today’s digital dynamic and technical environments in which IT is being used more and more around the globe for revenue generating initiatives and in fact, business is becoming IT. IT needs to spend more resources on creating unique competency for driving business growth; truly understand stakeholders’ expectations, and propose a products/services/solutions portfolio that corresponds to both demand and cost drivers with a focus on business priority and achieving strategic business goals.

An evolving digital IT is a lever to move the business forward. In fact, Information and Technology and its associated methodologies and practices are parts of the leverage mechanism to bridge the multitude of business gaps, implement digital strategies, modernize and integrate business processes, and build a cohesive set of business competencies. To shape IT enabled organizational capacity and capability on demand, IT management must ensure that application development does not proceed without a "clear business rationale"; and bring value to the company with continuous deliveries consistently. The collections of IT driven business initiatives and programs help the company achieve its targeted performance.

Leverage inclusiveness as the lever to spark creativity:
We can learn a lot from different mindsets (thought processes), cultures and positions, so organizations as a whole can be competitive enough to keep surging further. Leaders should always look for capabilities and skills that they don't have so that they can build a winning team and complement each other. Orienting people and making them aware of the inclusiveness in their organization or team, help them understand the value of harnessing the unique competency and cognitive difference, and then, giving them the tools and experience of how to effectively communicate and build trust in a dynamic digital working environment. The most innovative working environment and the most advanced societies are diverse mixtures of peoples that can think differently, spark creativity and amplify innovation impact.

In this globalized world and market, inclusiveness is the quality of the organizational environment that maximizes and leverages the diverse talents, backgrounds and perspectives of all employees. Those businesses that are unwilling to genuinely embrace inclusiveness, are unable to know how to tap their diverse resources. If inclusiveness is not embedded in your business culture and the change or management mechanism, sometimes, such practices even divide your workplace further. The business leaders must work with the right mindset to create an inclusive organization with every dip in the business lifecycle, from individual thinking to collective mind (culture); from strategy to execution; from process management to performance measurement, to make it both the principle and practice.

Unlocking business potentiality is the worthy investment and hidden dimension to explore the emerging opportunities, design new business models, and investigate different paths for expediting changes and accelerating business growth. By pulling the various business levers, you will get very great chances and opportunities to change your organization in many fields and lift up the organization to the next cycle of growth and maturity.
