Revitalize Digital Workforce to be Future-Ready

Revitalizing digital workforce won’t happen overnight, it takes planning, experimenting and scaling up.

With the faster pace of changes and continuous disruptions, companies across vertical sectors have huge pressures to survive and thrive in today’s hypercompetitive economic dynamic. They are at the transition stage from operating a mechanical organization to running a dynamic digital living business. Digital organizations are the mixed bag of something old and new; physical building and virtual platform, with a diverse workforce working in different functions running varying speed. A digital workplace encompasses so much that it's hard to isolate it from other dimensions of the enterprise. What is the logical scenario to overcome challenges and revitalize digital workforce to be future-ready?

Eliminate silos: Running a business nowadays is increasingly complex and fast-changing the need for specialization is likely to increase. However, greater specialization does not need to lead to silo thinking. Silos are a product of organizational insecurity and internal competition for resources. Silos self-perpetuate and silo mentalities emerge when the business operates from a fear standpoint, fear of rejection, fear of invisibility, fear that other peoples' accomplishments will somehow shadow yours, etc. To eliminate silo, digital leaders should provide clear process guidelines, having managers of respective functions to interact in a structural setting on a consistent basis towards eliminating silo mentalities, business units can reach across the aisles and respectively work with each other to harness communication and enforce collaboration. In an ideal digital workplace, the organizational structure is solid enough to keep people or things in order; but fluid enough to keep information and idea flow. Employees at all levels within an organization (from leaders to front-line) understand and develop their creative capacity to solve problems and exploit opportunities in new and innovative ways.

Recharge creative energy: Creative people release a positive aura and create energy. Their proactive attitudes, the blend of knowledge and ingenuity, as well as the right dose of confidence, are all valid within the context of his or her creative intelligence. While the individual contributions provide the 'building block" of creativity, creativity can manifest in a collective environment. Collective creativity is not just a mere cumulation of the creative inputs of those involves. Highly creative people in the team or across the teams brainstorm, collaborate, clarify, develop on each other's ideas, discover nuances and unexpected relationships, and so on. By manifesting creativity from an individual endeavor to a team activity and a collective effort, the horizon of creativity is expanded, and the creativity effect is amplified. It is the synchronization of their individual inputs to make something that no single individual would achieve, as well as it is about building up a momentum that draws creative contributions from the participants that they did not previously conceive or understood they were capable of.

Follow the “progress” principle: Fundamentally, digital transformation is a progressive journey of pursuing the next level of business maturity and societal progress. The modern society is a dynamic continuum with collective human progress. Thus, running a future-driven digital organization and revitalizing digital workforce starts with the growth mindset and follows with progressive activities. Leadership needs to be future-oriented and further-looking, with a clear business vision and the collective and broad range of business perspectives. Those forward-looking businesses realize that they have to renew themselves periodically to cope effectively with change, embrace fresh ideas, explore new possibilities, and shape the capacities to perform in the future so that they not only 'earn enough from today,' but thrive in the future, and make continuous progress.

Strengthen collaboration: The most effective digital workplace is one where collaboration and sharing are the norms. A digital organization is about collaboration, which needs to focus on harnessing cross-functional collaboration through iterative communications, robust processes, and efficient technological tools. Collaboration is the route towards revitalizing digital workforce to be future-ready. Understanding and recognizing that everyone plays a "piece of the pie." Encourage “teamwork,” and giving everyone a voice about how the organization and the people in it can prosper and thrive. Whenever people feel respected and needed in an organization, they are highly engaged in their work, encouraged to participate in creative activities, contribute to achieving strategic business goals, and revitalize a future-ready digital workforce.

Focus on problem-solving: Due to the exponential growth of information and continuous digital disruptions, the problems facing businesses also turn to be over-complex and difficult to solve. Digital workforce management helps employees at all levels within an organization understand and develop their creative capacity to solve problems and explore ample opportunities in new and innovative ways, so people can relate to themselves and to their experience of their environment and others around them. The management should leverage efficient tools, methods, and practices, develop tailored methodologies and practices, identify qualified problem-solvers with the right mindsets, differentiated capabilities, and skills for solving the right problems in the right way. The goal is to build a problem-solving culture and revitalize the digital workforce for meeting good results.

Organizations need to invest in the cultivation of capacity for change, innovation, and digital transformation. The high-mature digital organizations are fluid, alive, creative and productive, people are encouraged and given the time resources to work on new things that excite them. Revitalizing digital workforce won’t happen overnight, it takes planning, experimenting and scaling up.
