Three Critical Roles of Digital CIOs

Digital CIOs have multiple leadership and management role to play, for establishing strong interdependent relationships, operational excellence, information management effectiveness, and innovation success.

CIOs today need to have both business acumen and technical know-how. There’re many key traits in CIO leadership, there is versatility presented by modern CIOs, there’re many professional capability CIOs should cultivate. The digital CIO role is multifaceted, here are three critical roles Digital CIOs should play.

CIOs as tactical IT operational manager: Achieving operational excellence is still fundamental for IT organization. IT helps to integrate, optimize, and orchestrate business processes to facilitate business outcomes and build an effective digital ecosystem. However, many IT organizations suffer from overloaded tasks and overwhelming information, CIOs as the tactical IT operational managers play the crucial role in setting the right priority, bringing transparency and aligning IT portfolio management with strategic business goals and objectives, to ensure both IT effectiveness and efficiency. CIOs should also optimize business operation management capacity with a keen eye to grasp growth opportunities, manage risks, and improve operational efficiency via applying lightweight technologies seamlessly. CIOs as IT operation managers should go beyond “keeping the lights on,” they have to shift IT reputation from a cost center to a profit center. It is challenging because it requires some kind of rethinking and reinventing corporate processes and re-tuning the business capabilities. The only way to do this is to show a clear link to top executives between IT productivity, and top-line revenues. IT has to keep consolidating, integrating, modernizing, innovating, and optimizing, set the right metrics to measure IT from outside-in customers’ perspectives and evolve IT from being a cost center to becoming a revenue generator.

CIOs as an innovative digital leader: Innovative IT can only happen if IT is regarded as a strategic business partner and given the role in catalyzing innovation and driving the business. The CIO is both an artist and a technologist in imagining the IT vision and business models of tomorrow. Businesses need to understand not only the power and the opportunity information could bring in, but also the potential risks they might get exposed to. It’s all about striking the right balance to be both innovative and effective, be able to provide the “best or most innovative solution” for the businesses’ requirement, offering added value and feature insight based on system understanding, that the business might not even have thought of. More specifically, the understanding of what technology can help companies achieve and run IT as an innovation engine of the digital business. IT also has to strike the right balance between innovation and standardization. It is important for IT to standardize the applications and devices customers use to keep support cost down and manage risks effectively. Innovation is more about true knowledge acquisition first. IT plays a significant role in managing the information-knowledge-insight cycle. Because if the organization has got that knowledge, it could accomplish a lot with less, and do more with innovation, to achieve more than what it has today.

CIOs as the guardian of Information Management: Nowadays, the CIO is not just managing IT to keep the lights on, but managing information to ensure the right people getting the right information at the right time to make the right decisions.  Information Management is an important process of aligning the usage of information through the management practices: What data you have, in what format and the location and method it is held? And how to refine information into knowledge and business insight? The intrinsic value of information management is to turn the most valuable information and knowledge assets into corporately owned assets and improve business decision effectiveness and business competency. CIOs as the guardian of information management make information available and useful for growing the business and delighting customers. The goal of information management is also to ensure information ASSURANCE -information held is safe, secure and processes are legislatively compliant, and EXPLOITATION- collaboratively enabled and fully support the business objectives. The key to Information Management is integrity. The information has to be approved and as up-to-date as practically possible in a system which can be accessed by people who need it. Thus, CIOs as information guardian helps to ensure the information lifecycle is managed effectively and the business insight can be captured even at the right time to run a highly responsive organization and catalyzing business growth.

Digital CIOs have multiple leadership and management role to play, though it doesn’t mean that CIOs will solve every problem on their own, it’s about the ability to manage the business solution in a structural way. IT value has to be driven, indicated and understood at all levels of the organization. This is accomplished by establishing strong interdependent relationships, operational excellence, information management effectiveness, and innovation success.
