Innovativeculturepersonas

Culture is perhaps the most invisible, but powerful fabric surrounding organization. It defines people's mindset, attitude, and the organization's process.

Nature is a mindset, attitude, and competency of an organization. Every organization has a certain culture, or a set of subcultures. Culture is not one level but many. To succeed in any endeavor, you need to understand the culture and the drivers behind any action. To understand the culture, professionals need to explore the implicit cultural traits-the hidden beliefs that are difficult to know and take time to uncover.

Different culture personas are in demand to analyze, design, and change culture. It takes a lot of time and effort but the results are tremendous; if your culture embraces the future, inspires others, being people-centric, then it forms a dynamic business environment and creates business synergy.

Culture Analyst: Culture takes all forms, culture is invisible, but directly impacts on all critical aspects of the organization. Most enterprises have primary culture and many subcultures as well. What sociology refers to as culture is a reaffirmation of values through totems and history. Culture is collective value and corporate brand; these values are driven by deeper primal motives which are the mysterious need that humans have to connect with each other. The structure of these connections transcends culture and even values. Culture analysts play a significant role in assessing, analyzing existing culture effectiveness, and then raise a series of questions to help understand culture deeply, identify culture related concerns, gaps, or the cause-effect of culture evolution.

In reality, most companies have trouble seeing their own culture as they are so immersed in it. Culture represents the box in which decisions are framed and the footprint the organization actions occur. It impacts directly or indirectly on the business management effectiveness, and employee satisfaction. A positive culture such as a culture of learning and creativity helps to build differentiated business advantages. The negative culture such as bureaucracy or resist-to-change can cause long term pain such as process inefficiency, structural inflexibility, capability incoherence, etc. When the culture fails to enable effective strategy management, it’s important to diagnose the root causes, behaviors are on the surface, attitudes are in the middle, and mindset are underneath. It is only when we have to go beyond words and conventional wisdom, dive into the collective thoughts, so that we are actually able to understand culture, as well as our role in influencing culture or being influenced by it. Part of the key in this situation is that the culture analyst needs to not only know how to communicate analytical details of the culture, but also, how to apply them to fix the culture related problem at hand.

Culture designer: Whereas the cultural aspect is an intrinsic factor that drives the organization's business longevity following the principles and practices to understand different cultures. If you want to create a great culture to unlock business potential, you need to be responsive to feedback either individually or collectively. There are many cultural models around. As a culture designer, often, their task is not to completely "design a complex structure like a culture"; but to redesign some aspects in an existing organizational culture to drive change needed to build a workforce for building organizational competency.

Culture needs to be reinvented at the different stages of the organization. In a fast-growing company people tend to have similar ideal values that then get manifested in their corporate culture. When the company grows, this corporate culture tends to stay the same over time –that is culture inertia. However, in order to move up to the next level of organizational maturity, the culture needs to be redesigned for adapting to the emerging digital trend. In the digital era with rapid change and frequent disruptions, businesses today need nothing less than a paradigm shift in their thinking about the fundamentals of how organizations work to design and develop a digital fitting culture and an engaging workforce.

Culture change agent:
Changing the organizational culture is not so easily done because traditions are closely held as norms, values, and beliefs. But it’s imperative if certain culture-related issues keep coming back, causing deep concerns about organizational long-term competency. Great culture ingredients such as openness, transparency, collaboration, empowerment, respect for the value of people add value to the enterprises and become part of the organizational brand. It’s important to set proper guidance coupled with deep understanding, both based on clear visibility to enhance multidimensional culture understanding; focusing on creating the fitting organizational culture, in which people can take ownership of their processes and believe better-than-expected results.

Cultural transformation may be the desired outcome, but it cannot be mandated, it must evolve. Culture is created and shaped by a cascade of influences. The attributes displayed are a product of other actions. These are things that can’t be easily manipulated. The organizational differentiation can be facilitated by a culture encouraging innovation individuality and collectively. Reinforcing the culture change requires shared vision plus innovative, committed and passionate leadership and a commitment to alignment and integration of people, processes, practices, and technology across the enterprise. Become a culture change agent to retool the organizational culture for achieving high business performance potential. The spirit comes from the top, the top leaders should become organizational culture change agents by setting right principles or guidelines, grounding rules, and setting examples to shape desired culture and improve business maturity.

Culture is perhaps the most invisible, but powerful fabric surrounding organization. It defines people's mindset, attitude, and the organization's process. Changing an outdated culture that perhaps existed for centuries at national or global level is like boiling an ocean. To be effective in culture change, we need three things - awareness, knowledge, and skills to build intrinsic, fluid and cultural intelligence. Culture reinvention is a tough journey to make collective progress and advance humanity.

Interdisciplinarygovernance

The flavor of GRC practices depends on the nature of the business and the level of the organizational maturity.

The important characteristics of digitalization are over-complexity, uncertainty, and ambiguity. Hence, GRC (governance, risk management, and compliance) becomes more critical than ever. Here's the context; how should GRC programs be approached? Should technology be a driver? Can you achieve any level of GRC without automation? Can you achieve any level of GRC without people? What is the real driver of GRC?

Modern corporate boards play significant roles in guiding businesses in the right direction and achieve expected business results. Due to the “VUCA” characteristics -Complexity, Uncertainty, Ambiguity, and Velocity of the Digital Era, the directorship in any organization must have the agility to adapt to changes and build abilities to advise, inspire and motivate a group of people toward accomplishing shared visions and goals. Here are the multiple perspectives of shaping a strategic boardroom with digital acumen.

Interdisciplinary Governance

Interdisciplinarygovernance Corporate GRC discipline can fulfill its purpose as a high-level corporate enabler by providing a structured view and communication bridge between stakeholders. Without effective GRC discipline, the business will face significant risk for surviving, and opportunities which it creates cannot be properly transferred into multidimensional business value. Thus, governance must be viewed and assessed at the enterprise level to enhance management effectiveness and improve organizational maturity.

Interwoven GRC Capability & Maturity The capability is the ability to achieve the desired effect under specified performance, standards, and conditions. There are multiple perspectives of organizational capabilities, and there are all sorts of capabilities. High mature capability can only be developed and sustained via strong governance discipline. There are a multitude of distinctions between corporate governance responsibilities and management responsibilities; such as governance structure, governance process, governance mechanisms, governance practices, and governance metrics, etc.

Innergovernanceintegration As business leaders today, you can’t predict every turn or curve that the organization will face. There is a myriad of information, conflicts, and change inertia in the modern business environment today. Governance is by definition a framework of principle, structure, process, mechanism, practice, and metric, etc.

Itgovernance Digital IT is permeating into the very fabric or core processes in modern organizations, thus, IT governance is crucial to steering business in the right direction and make effective business decisions. However, what is the best approach to begin implementing formal IT Governance specifically aimed at improving the quality of demand? How can the "competition" for finite dollars be structured so that the end game, best benefit for the enterprise, is achieved? How much of a decision-making body (vs. advisory or discussion forum) is the IT Steering Committee (ITSC) and how do they make those decisions? How does one keep the ITSC focused on WHAT IT should work on and not HOW IT accomplishes it ("If IT was more efficient at keeping the lights on, you could have more dollars to spend on new things")?

Variety of Governance The purpose of governance is to steer the organization in the right direction. It provides monitoring, measuring, and enforcement mechanisms to corporate management. The corporate governance rules and principles need to be followed to improve the functioning and transparency of the company, its business strategy, and management performance.

Innovation

You won’t feel satisfied until you’ve done everything you could do to make your organization innovative, resilient, and accountable as it could be, and walk through the tough journey of business innovation smoothly.

Innovation is complex and scalable in the hyper-connected business environment, as it has to result in something which leads us to a better state than where we are today. Innovation is complex nowadays, it’s not so easy to count on one individual or one team to do innovation, but a cross-boundary collaboration that needs strategic alliance to amplify its impact.

It is important to take a unique innovation approach or a mix of different approaches to addressing the needs and improving innovation success rate.

Innovation & process:
Creativity and process seem different, creativity is about generating novel ideas flows, which is sometimes out of order, even chaotic to a certain level; while process is about managing flows from chaos structurally. Thus, there is the natural tension between defined innovation and processes, but still, innovation itself is a process that can be managed and improved. Innovation usually happens at the intersection of people and process, process and technology, customers and organizations. A loosely structured, circular process allows companies to connect with the various points of the spiral in different ways vertically or horizontally. Overly rigid processes with heavy logistics stifle innovation. An organization that has a lightweight process which allows creativity and innovation to flow, get protected and channeled will succeed more often than an organization that does not have such a process.

Effective innovation management requires a fit process as part of the holistic innovation system and people as a center of innovation. There are a variety of processes in innovation management such as idea generation/management process, design process, implementation process, innovation governance/risk management processes, as well as innovation performance evaluation processes. It’s important to make innovation processes as visible, company-wide, as possible, otherwise, silos generate redundancy, create frictions, and cause delay in innovation management significantly. It is critical to create an open space to keep ideas flowing; innovation processes could be very loose on purpose; but structural enough to transform ideas for achieving their commercial business values.

Innovation & capability: Innovation is a unique business capability which is underpinned by varying business elements such as people, process, culture, and technology. The level of innovation capability maturity directly impacts the growth potential of the organization. To develop innovation capability, every organization needs to develop tailored innovation principles, methodologies, practices and apply them wisely with the expertise to really add value and develop the organizational level innovation competency.

Assessing the innovation capability of any organization requires a systematic approach. If you want to build a highly innovative organization, besides hard processes and technologies, you should develop a culture of creativity because the evolution of innovation only exists in a more open environment that creates unique insight, and takes advantage of all sources of creativity in an open way. It’s important to balance the art and science that goes back and forth between innovation capability design and modeling in order to manage the capability development cycle successfully by managing a balanced innovation portfolio with a right mix of incremental innovations and breakthrough innovations.

Innovation & architecture: I
nnovation in many businesses today has broader scope and can be categorized into incremental innovation and radical innovation. It is complex, perhaps you need to navigate across knowledge domains, functional boundaries, geographical territories, or vertical industries. Business Architecture can be used as a collaboration instrument to create a decent innovation capability map for adapting to the changing environment and driving innovation systematically. The architectural framework helps to deal with the tension between standardization and innovation smoothly; addressing complexity, and technical remediation to enable innovation implementation effectiveness.

There are both tangible and intangible elements that need to be knitted into the unique innovation competency of the organization. There’s no “one size fits all” success formula for innovation management success. On the soft side, innovation management is more about culture and knowledge-management, business architecture is the body of knowledge, which has the influence power to advocate innovation in people's minds. Business architecture improves interdisciplinary discipline to blend art and science, leverage analogous communication and aesthetic themes to embrace new perspectives, invent innovative products/services, or alternative approaches to problem-solving.

We no longer live in the world that runs in years, but one that runs in minutes. A new paradigm arises out of fresh mindsets, updated knowledge, and new approach. You won’t feel satisfied until you’ve done everything you could do to make your organization innovative, resilient, and accountable as it could be, and walk through the tough journey of business innovation smoothly by building differentiated innovation competency.

Innatealliance

Evaluating the digital readiness of the business and making strategic alliances are important to allow room for adjustments and keeping the organization dynamic and informative.

New year is the time to boost energy and rejuvenate passion for unlocking workforce performance Technically, there is no single initiative or the “theme of year” that will suffice to raise the business sensitivity and innovate corporate culture, it takes deliberate planning and dedicated effort for developing high-effective, high-innovative, and high-disciplined workforce.

Due to fierce competition and rapid changes, it is important to understand that business development is multifaceted and interdisciplinary. In terms of alliance, the management should ask insightful questions to clarify goals and means, make cross-boundary communication & collaboration to amplify change effectively, and enable organizations thriving for the long run.

Does everyone know and understand each other's goals and have agreed on common overall goals via seamless alignment?
The digital workforce is a hyper-connected generation with a multitude of varieties, they have diverse perceptions based on their own life/professional experience, knowledge expertise, culture background, etc. When teaming up, heterogeneous teams are usually more innovative for generating fresh ideas, but it is critical for them to think  empathetically, exchange accurate information, understand each other from mindset to behavior. The communication between team members, or between teams should be improved to harness partnership, demonstrate business value and engage employees for improving collective performance.

Alignment goes beyond conformity and order taking. The smooth alignment is multifaceted, across the organizational hierarchy by enhancing interpersonal communication, value analytics, and governance. First, there is the common agreed strategic goal; from this goal, you determine certain "action items” which become goals for business units. Those business units determine action items from these goals, and these action items become the goals of the teams within each business unit. And so on, until each individual has a goal, with action items and opposing metrics. Only through smooth alignment and process integration, the business strategy can be executed to deliver the high-performance results effectively. Those organizations that have a more mature alignment maturity outperform their competitors and tend to be more responsive to these changes.

Are information and knowledge equally shared among all members with clarity?
Communication clarity makes a direct impact on the business effectiveness and performance. Information accuracy directly impacts communication maturity. A group of high performing individuals is most likely to underachieve if they don't communicate and collaborate smoothly. In many large organizations, there are often different dialects existing in the different departments of the enterprise, misinformation and misinterpretation cause confusion. Information is handled inappropriately; knowledge does not get updated to fit for the new circumstances. People across the company have trouble handling ambiguous or unclear information, and information overload results in the lack of accountability.

Assuming you have the best people in each seat, then what? The real challenge is getting everyone to get the quality information they need to make timely decisions, and also have the compatible set of knowledge to collaborate effectively. Information is overwhelming, and knowledge is outdated sooner than what you thought of. People have learned to no longer apply outdated knowledge in the specific cases, and then, relearn the updated knowledge for gaining insight on the changing circumstance. It’s also important to observe, listen, and collect feedback, to truly improve communication clarity with empathy and clarity, build alliance and unlock performance.

Is there an environment of culture of trust?
Trust takes the breadth and depth of collective cognizance and collaborative effort for building up an innovative working environment and high performance workforce. To develop and maintain trust requires respect, repeat or predictable behavior, dependability, and the fulfillment of promises. All these things take time, but it is worth the effort to harness alliance and collaboration. You can have a team of great players, but there needs to be great attention given to role clarification and the human dynamics of personalities and human behavior, to nurture a culture of trust and improve productivity, innovation and performance.

The true trust is multidimensional; it encompasses trusting self, trusting others, and earning the trust of others. All of which are vital to building, nurturing mutual trust. It's trust that is the key determinant of any collaborative effort; and conversely, the lack of it that can accurately predict the demise of any collaborative effort. To build and maintain trust requires respect, repeat, predictable behavior: dependability, accountability, and the fulfillment of promises. All these things take time, but are necessary to build a strong team, make alignment, and deliver high performance results.

Evaluating the digital readiness of the business and making strategic alliances are important to allow room for adjustments and keeping the organization dynamic and informative. It is possible to achieve the strategic goals timely only if the company has clearly identified and communicated what is in scope, what is the purpose of the change, what the context is, what the company vision, culture and values are, and convince the team to move in that right direction for achieving high performance results.

Identifyconstraintsofproblemsolving

Effective problem solving requires information refinement and resource awareness, talent fit, process efficiency, updated methodologies & practices.

Quite many problems today are complex due to exponential growth of information and interdependent pieces of varying issues. There is a shortage of effective problem-solving management which could be translated to the capacity shortage for both defining and solving the right problems.

It’s important to identify a variety of constraints, build a comprehensive problem-solving framework to integrate all important components for designing and developing innovative solutions and optimizing problem-solving management.

Specifying the constraints on problem-solving methodology and techniques: The problem-solving logic is simple - diagnose the real problem and solve it in the right way. However, the problem-solving thought process and practices will not be simple for many of today’s vexing problems. Fixing  today’s nonlinear complex problems is a collaborative effort. Problem-solving methodologies and techniques could be complex and confusing sometimes. The main emphasis is on doing "better pre-work" - identifying multiple, perhaps interconnected problems. defining alternative solutions and the "success criteria," enabling consideration of the range of options, rather than the more traditional problem-solving methodology and practice.

The problems today usually have many causes and can be very complex, you can't figure out the exact cause and effect so the solutions are vague Traditional problem-solving in running business is often based on linear logic and industrial best practices, problem-solving ineffectiveness and failure are caused by “we always do things like that” mentality, even if circumstances are already changed a long time ago. Silos cause slowness and small-thinking, further creating cross-functional communication and collaboration gaps. Many information technology-enabled business solutions have tough issues such as integration. If not being handled effectively, it perhaps generates more serious issues later on. Complex problem-solving has to be done with a “big picture,” having the solution architecture in mind; having specialized generalists to interface effectively and solve complex problems radically.

Identifying information & knowledge constraints on problem-solving:
In many traditional companies, problem-solving gets stuck because people have different perspectives about problems, and also lack quality information to make timely decisions in order to solve problems smoothly. The poor information management most organizations experience is caused by a lack of in-depth understanding of information integrity; not knowing how to apply the worthwhile evaluation to reveal the inherent value of information. It is a persistent and pervasive problem that demands an ongoing reviewing process to ensure that business requirement and information requirement mapping effectively and efficiently together for cohesive decision-making and informative problem-solving.

For complex problem-solving, the intrinsic value of information is about turning the most invaluable information and knowledge assets into precious insight to improve problem-solving competency. Business management needs to identify the information needed for decisions and problem-solving and determine how to collect relevant information. It’s important to improve information fluency and usage by allowing information flow across the functional boundary, being able to identify critical pieces of information and improve data validation. The undervalued information as a resource should be used strategically to best business advantage. So organizational management needs to concentrate on the business information requirements that enable critical problem-solving. Develop Information Management as a threshold competency to enforce the strategic focus of the business, altering or changing the frame of reference to create previously unconsidered business solutions to either existing problems or emerging issues.

Identifying resource/talent constraints on problem-solving: Organizations have limited resources and talent, the real challenge is to understand your priorities of problems, and know where and how you can solve them and make continuous improvement. When resource management becomes a bottleneck for organizational management, no wonder companies across the vertical sectors get stuck in problem-solving. The really important thing is to understand the core business of your enterprise and the critical problems that need to be solved, and apply finite resources to get the best yield possible to meet stakeholders’ expectations. For any company to succeed in the long term, how resource allocation is determined should be understood by all important parties, to solve business problems that really matter in both effective and efficient ways.

Problem-solving competency differentiates business leaders from laggards. It’s important to understand the real problems, put the right talent with the right expertise to solve the right problems. Always be careful about examining the potential points of engagement, rather than jumping to the “we'll fix this" mentality. High mature organizations have a strong capacity to leverage resources, time, and human capital, set the right priority to solve the most critical problems, mind resource and investment gap to enforce successful capacity planning and holistic resource management discipline to improve the overall problem-solving effectiveness.

There are unknown interactions, interdependent pieces, and very high inner dynamics in many problems which have an inherent and irreducible complexity. Effective problem solving requires information refinement and resource awareness, talent fit, process efficiency, updated methodologies & practices. Having constraints provides guidelines for problem-solving by providing anchors to explore from. Thus a successful problem-solving scenario is actually a process of deduction to derive a solution drawing from knowledge, experience, and out-of-the-box creativity for achieving higher-than-expected results and unlocking performance.

Riding ahead of the change curve takes vision, strategy, courage, methodology, principles, and practices.

Digital makes a significant impact on how we think, live, and work. There is the mix of old and new, physical and virtual, order and chaos. We are in a time of tremendous change, the dawn of the digital age, the path to the next level of digital maturity, also in the era of confusion and information overload. Therefore, it’s critical to identify, understand, and avoid pitfalls, discover strategic and predictive pathways to change, increase confidence, position a brand and leverage resources to make the digital paradigm shift effortlessly.     Uncover Change Roadblocks

Insight Upon Change Obstacles Change is the new normal with increasing speed. There are two types of change: proactive and reactive. Proactive implies anticipation of changes via predictive or pre planning change scenarios. Reactive is adaptive to change that has already occurred or is underway. Many changes, especially business transformation, are difficult, you have to remove roadblocks, overcome change obstacles, get out of the “comfort zones,” and manage change in a structural way.

Unhealthycompetitions It’s the beginning of the new year, it’s also the great time to overcome shadow thinking and rejuvenate positive energy for moving forward confidently. In reality, the workplace competition is not always positive, it is the energy behind the competition that matters sometimes. The goals or motivation behind competition can be unhealthy and the competitive arena can produce a myriad of unwise mentality and negative externalities. How to encourage professionalism and healthy competitions for innovative problems-solving and transformative changes?

Uncoverchangeroadblocks Change is inevitable, we all should adapt to it. The human element of change entails a people-centric approach to change management style. It’s imperative to awaken the changing consciousness of the people, encourage them to develop changeability, keep them alert of risks on the way. Without taking a breath to look back, look forward, plowing on to the next big thing before completely embedding the change into business as usual or running multiple simultaneous changes can leave a workforce reeling and exhausted. How do you overcome the objections or roadblocks on the journey of changes, and how can you improve the success rate of change management?

Innovationpitfalls Every organization is different, they are also at the different stages of business growth, they have different functions, structures, layers, and systems, aiming to move into a more advanced stage of business deployment by tailoring their own unique strength and business maturity. In some businesses, especially large well-established companies, miscommunication, misinterpretation or misunderstanding is prevailing and leads to conflict; blind-spots, bottle necks, grey areas in a variety of management cause business malfunctioning. To bridge business management chasms, it is important to involve not only putting different pieces together but also blend them in such a way that the emergent whole is somehow more than the sum of its parts.

Innerrootcausesofdigitalstagnation Change becomes the new normal, and even the speed of change is accelerating. Either for individuals or businesses today, change is inevitable, some of us get it quicker than others. But too often changes are made as a reaction to outer impulses, crisis. From a change management perspective, what's the psychology behind the change? What are the possible change pitfalls on the way? What would be a good way to empower change agents and develop changeability? Many organizations are on the journey of digitalization, what are the root causes of digital stagnation?

Innovativeleadershipviii

Organizations not only need good managers to take care of today’s business; but also have to grow visionary leaders to lift their companies for long-term prosperity.

The business is complex, the world is complex, and leadership is complex, leadership is about the future and change, innovation, and progress. Leadership differs by level, the type of organization, the stage of organizational evolution, the mindset of stakeholders, the complexity of the business, and many other variables.

The future of leaders has to deal with opposing views, cultures, constraints and competition across the global scope. At a high mature level, leaders change the course of the business by seeing beyond what all others see and by understanding issues from new perspectives.

The oversight of organizational management helps to identify blind spots, diagnoses issues, and outlines the preferred course of action: There are lots of things going on in the organizations, leaders need to continue learning to keep their knowledge updated and their viewpoint fresh. Strategy management is about creating tomorrow's organization out of today. Having a systematic oversight of the business at the top leadership level enables the management to avoid tunnel vision, keeps an open mind to explore emerging possibilities, identifies and strengthens the weakest link because the best business solution should be the one that responds perfectly to its dynamic business environment and ensures the organization as a whole to achieve the better business results.

To improve oversight effectiveness, knowledge is no doubt important, but more than that, it is complete awareness of what is happening in the context. Once you figure that out, you are able to classify the key elements and know their linkage, leverage the right information, connect divergent factors in the business ecosystem for providing a structured view and communication bridge between shareholders/investors. The oversight of business management helps to identify blind spots, diagnoses critical issues, and outlines the preferred course of action. The oversight of key processes ensures core processes are intelligent, dynamic, and goal-driven to build differentiated business competencies for unlocking performance.

Insight is about digging underneath, seeing around the corner or reading between the lines for truly uncovering the truth:
The human society today becomes much more nonlinear, interconnected, and interdependent than ever. It’s widely known that there is stereotypical thinking, conventional wisdom, or preconceived notions about how things should happen and how people are evaluated. Insight is being able to identify the root cause of a problem or the core issues of a situation which leads to understanding and resolution. Insight is also the ability to know people deeply, putting people in the right positions to solve right problems. The more complex the situation is, the more interdisciplinary knowledge, different approaches and role gaming is needed to reach for insightful understanding.

Technically, insight is the intersection of critical and creative thinking, analytics and synthesis; linear logic and nonlinear reasoning; the power of acute observation, questioning, connection, penetration, discernment. It's about understanding the inner nature of things or of seeing things intuitively. Pre-conceptual assumptions of cognitive biases are often due to a lack of profound understanding, subjective perception or certain outdated common beliefs. Nowadays, the border of knowledge domains is blurred and the scope of knowledge is expanded in the continual base. Insightful understanding can be enhanced by seeing the two sides of the coin, listening to the two versions of stories, understanding of a specific cause and effect in a specific context or the core issues of a situation, clarifying the sequence and consequence of the problem-solving.

The outlier’s view enables business leaders to understand problems from an outside-in perspective or read issues from different angles: The digital era upon us is the age of innovation, and innovation is a unique business capability to accelerate growth and decide the business's long-term prosperity. Outlier leaders today are the one who can step out of a conventional thinking box or linear patterns, see things further or deeper, and be creatively disruptive. An outlier’s view is upon how to see things from different angles, keeping a certain distance from the environment you observe or experience, so you can capture the full picture, and think out of the box for spurring creativity. Outliers have an open mind that holds onto its beliefs while being prepared to consider other perspectives should they make sense, absorb new knowledge and expand their thinking box to solve problems innovatively.

If people try to come to a consensus via one single choice, this can overlook key points of information, as every wise thought always has opposite thoughts, not less wise. In today's hyper connected global economy, we can learn a lot from different mindsets, cultures and positions. The outlier’s view enables the business to scrutinize the company by stepping out of a conventional thinking box, or linear patterns and seeing things further or deeper. Outliers have an important role in helping organizations expand the horizon of conventional management, generating some distinct alternatives that could pursue the business goals and objectives, spotting blind-spots, bridging gaps, and exploring multi-routes to get the destination ultimately.

Organizations not only need good managers to take care of today’s business; but also have to grow visionary leaders to lift their companies for long-term prosperity. Being transformational goes beyond skills only, it requires well-mixed vision, leadership substance, have better sense to capture the business trend, be genuinely curious about information, knowledge and future perspective, empathic communication, so they can drive changes confidently and effortlessly.

Innatecomplexity

The simplicity and complexity are just opposite ends of the same spectrum. That compounds all "problems." You need complexity to understand and appreciate the simplicity and vice versa.

It becomes complex if things do interact, particularly in the case of "nonlinear" interaction, you can't separate things properly or you cannot predict the actual effect of interaction straightforwardly. Companies that are skilled at managing complexity can gain advantages by pushing the boundaries of a more sophisticated business mix that provides opportunities to create inter-business value, differentiated digital capabilities and the unique set of business competency.

   Innate Complexity

Understandcomplexity Due to the “VUCA” digital new normal, change is unavoidable and digital disruption is inevitable. Businesses become complex if things do interact, particularly in the case of interdependent relationships, nonlinear interactions with un-repetitive activities and behavior, diversity, volatility, ambiguity, unpredictability. As a matter of fact, complexity has increased exponentially and has become the part of digital new normal. There are unknown interactions and very high inner dynamics in complexity. Complexity management is both art and science.

Innatecomplexity Complexity is a part of our sophisticated natural and human world. It is diverse, ambiguous, and dynamic with unpredictable outcomes. There is a mixed feeling about complexity; on one hand, desired complexity implies advancement and nonduplication; on the other hand, complication-undesired complexity causes difficulties and unnecessary pains.

Innervarietyofcomplexity Change is overwhelming, and complexity is inevitable, but they are both facts that are happening all the time and at a faster pace than ever before. Complexity means increased uncertainty in things outside our control and uncertainty in the results of implementing strategies. Complexity is diverse, ambiguous, and dynamic with unpredictable outcomes. Considering there is no universally agreed definition of complexity, imagine the complexity that comes in due to the very characteristics such as volatility, unpredictability, ambiguity, nonlinearity, or increased flux, etc. In the corporate scope, there are varieties of complexity such as hierarchical complexity, information complexity, fractal complexity, network complexity, governance complexity, etc. Complexity management takes multidimensional thinking and multidisciplinary approaches.

Art and Science of Complexity Management Organizations become complex as an evolutionary trend, not for their own amusement, they do it to respond to environments more proactively. And much of that environment is experienced through trying to get things done. As a matter of fact, modern organizations spend significant time and resources to deal with complexity, is complexity good or bad, and how to manage complexity effectively?

Complexity is an “Inevitable Thing” Things become complex; if they interact; in the case of -"nonlinear" interactions with-interdependent relationships, and hyper connected space, complexity is -a multifaceted thing.

Innovativeparadigmtokickstartnewyear

The new paradigm arises out of the emerging trends to reinforce the very characteristics of the digital business such as professional growth, innovation, and people-centricity.

The New Year is the time to make resolutions. Do not get stuck at the crossroad, keep building professional competency and take a journey of change with continuous delivery and improvement.

Business leaders should do self-reflection by asking insightful questions and make objective assessments of their leadership effectiveness. Transformational leaders play a significant role in breaking down silos and breaking through conventional wisdom, leading changes in a bold way with the step-wise approach.

Can you lead transformative change or breakthrough innovation? Change is not easy, the workforce today is multi-generational and multicultural; each generation is defined by a set of stereotypes, perhaps has different worldviews, cultural perspective, education patterns, and learns differently through different media and methodologies. To unify common purposes and goals, bridge gaps, pull in the same direction for transformative changes, the logic scenario to build change management capability is to develop the initial value proposition and determine demand and estimated pipeline. Every individual, including the leader, has limited knowledge or viewpoint. So they need to be self-aware, learn from each other, share ideas, and viewpoints from different perspectives; collectively, so collaboratively, they can build a strong team with autonomy to not only manage quick wins, but also realize the long-term results through the iterative approach.

From envisioning to communicating changes, do not lose the vision for the big leap, long jump, and radical digital transformation. Every large scale of changes needs a roadmap or a change management agenda to build up the competency center, identify gaps, communicate buy-ins, empower the team, and amplify their knowledge power to solve complex business problems innovatively. It’s important to keep tuning change processes, build the organization-wide change network to seek constructive opinion, build mutual-trust, make consistent engagement and continuous improvement, develop the best and next change practices and scale up change effort seamlessly.

Can you drive team building and organizational learning
? To develop an organization with high changeability and learning agility, organizational leaders should make an objective assessment of their organization’s learning maturity and develop a highly effective learning framework with all important components to build the organizational learning competency. Organizational learning is acquired through a learning process involving discourse within the context of an organization's learning culture. To create a culture of learning means having pro-learning mindsets, particularly from top-down. Learning should help to open, not close one’s mind, inspire multidimensional thinking, recognize opportunities, update knowledge, and build unique competencies all the time.

Without learning, you cannot unleash collective human potential, and thus, the full potential of the business. If you fail to be aware and climb the learning curve, individuals or organizations will get static and lag behind. Digital learning is multidimensional, dynamic, flexible, interactive, informal and integrated. The digital platforms and technologies make learning more effective and innovative, enforce knowledge sharing and collaboration at large scale. Developing people capability and systems capability raise different "learning" issues.” The culture of learning fosters openness, information-sharing, critical and independent thinking and professionalism.

Do you have a positive and bold message and brand?
A company's brand is one of its most invaluable assets, and like any asset, it is the responsibility of senior leadership to protect and nurture it. The corporate brand is the consistent image that the organization presents to its customers, employees, business partners or other stakeholders. Thus, business leaders should identify what their brand stands for, how the company wants its stakeholders to see and perceive the brand name, the connotation it wants its stakeholders to associate to, and the primary activities through which the brand name gets communicated and spread out, so they can contribute to brand enhancement as a coherent effort of shaping the business vision and crafting good strategy.

Rebranding business starts with rebooting mindsets of leadership, followed by retooling management and training staff as the brand ambassadors. It’s important to develop a set of practices for promoting the brand name of a corporate entity, set a clear choice among future scenarios that advocate advancement, promote the organizational brand and encourage positive behaviors. The top management has to continually evaluate the management team to determine if the right strategy and culture are thriving in the organization and to proactively drive the future growth of the business and build a strong corporate brand.

As businesses get more cut-throat in the hyper-connected and interdependent business environment. Change is inevitable, and business transformation is the change but on a grand level. Forethoughtful leaders make good policies and set the right tones for encouraging creativity, motivating learning, enforcing risk-management. The new paradigm arises out of the emerging trends to reinforce the very characteristics of the digital business such as professional growth, innovation, and people-centricity. So individuals and organizations need to become more adaptive to changes, informative to decide and proactive to solve problems smoothly.

Unhealthycompetitions

It is important to run away from the shadow of unhealthy competitions, and thrive on healthy competitions between ideas and values that stimulate creative problem-solving and drive social progress.

It’s the beginning of the new year, it’s also the great time to overcome shadow thinking and rejuvenate positive energy for moving forward confidently.

Unprofessionalism suffocates individuals or businesses' changeability or diminishes the brightness of their true talent: There are many reasons to compete, and there are many ways to compete. In the organizations that get stuck at change or discourage creativity, sometimes people hold the negative attitude about healthy competition, because they assume if someone wins the competition and shows the talent, they might feel intimidated and struggle in the survival mentality, further causing negative psychology to compete unhealthily. To put it another way, unprofessional workplace competition can create unhealthy rivalries, perhaps creating undue stress that may actually prove to be counterproductive and become the very cause of employee disengagement and talent shortage. Without negative competitions, we would be able to use our talents and capability for the betterment and further unleash potential.

How to discourage unprofessional competition? It’s important to develop a culture of authenticity, learning and innovation by integrating talent management, change/culture management, and performance management systems seamlessly. We all have talents each on our own, we all need to spend time on developing skills and building unique competencies. The management needs to have the wise eyes to identify their innovators and change champions, the people who present a positive mentality, empower them to lead progressive changes. The purpose of competition is to inspire creative thinking and improve business competency. As leaders, you need to set great examples, be more confident and conscious rather than be threatened by growth minds or strong characters.

Unhealthy competitions enlarge gaps, cause psychological confusion & frustrations, and stifle collective human progress: In the industrial age with scarce knowledge, people have silo mentality and organizations is formed with overly restrictive hierarchy; the management shows command & control style that often cause unhealthy internal competitions for limited resources, the business becomes the sum of pieces, organizations lose their collaborative advantage as the whole. Unhealthy competitions enlarge cognitive gaps by generating psychological confusion & frustrations, resource/talent alignment gaps which further impede innovation and strategy implementation, Oftentimes, either for individuals or businesses, if you only keep your eyes on competitors and how to beat them down, without laser focus on building your own unique set of competencies based on your own innate ability, you perhaps get trapped towards unprofessional competitions.

Still, to fix the root cause of problems such as unhealthy competition, the real issue is to figure out the motivation or purpose behind the competition psychologically, sociologically or methodologically. Unhealthy competitions create unhealthy rivalries that result in workers resenting one another or encourage unprofessional mentality or behavior, diminish trust and stifle innovation. Technically, if there is a lack of trust, then there would most likely be an over-abundance of control mechanisms. Even though you can control people’s behavior for a while, you perhaps cannot fix their psychology that might cause long term concerns. In order to build trust, it’s important to encourage positive mentality, constructive feedback and good behaviors for establishing the collaborative framework with checks and balances within the teams to inspire constructive disruption and radical innovation.

Competition to delay problem-solving or cause more serious issues for the long term is unhealthy:
Corporate leaders play a significant role in shaping constructive competition philosophy and practices. Without a clear vision, competition is short-sighted; without good intention and great purpose, negative competition becomes a severe social problem, because it encourages arrogant attitude, bad behaviors, delays problem-solving, causes a culture of inertia and ultimately tarnished the reputation of great individuals, organizations or society. It is important to run away from the shadow of unhealthy competitions, and thrive on healthy competitions between ideas and values that stimulate creative problem-solving and drive social progress. Competition to catalyze digital innovation is great. Strong leaders create a harmonized working environment by communicating smoothly, giving everyone a voice in how the organization and the people in it can prosper and thrive, inspire healthy competitions based on people’s talent and competency, and take a collaborative road to problem-solving harmoniously.

Competition, in and of itself, is not inherently bad. The quality of competition is not only dependent on the quality of participants, but also the assessors who can drive the competitions toward the culture you would like to develop and the type of innovation/competency the organization needs to build on. With talented and wise assessors with a set of ultra-modern mindsets, plus a set of common principles that all parties agree with, the competitions could be fair enough to lead the changes we all would like to see. The highly qualified and professional participants can even get respect from competitors. High mature digital business can provide a more intensive and creative working environment to get all the right people with the right capability in the right position to solve the right problems from right angles timely by appreciating true talent, recognizing the real problem-solvers, and inspiring healthy competitions.

If the digital organization or society is a living body, every individual is like an active cell to keep growing and flowing, to unlock their potential. Competition and collaboration are both natural in a business environment or human society, the point is to understand the special context and situations, encourage professionalism and innovation. The new year is always a good start to renew positive energy, enhance trust, with the goal to encourage innovation. Over time, things change, we humans are developing, growing and competing with purpose and choice are part of that evolutionary process and accelerate collective human progress.

Uncoverpsychologyofculture

There is no one size fits all approach to addressing the different psychological responses and thereby reducing anxiety because there are different psychological perspectives.

Culture is collective mindset and behavior. Culture of innovation is a collective mindset and a prerequisite to run a sustainable business these days.

Changing the culture is the mindset, although you can’t impose the desired culture to your organization, surely you can apply a clear logic to diagnose and fix culture related problems, following with the principles and practices to understand different cultures, transform your culture by pushing the "right or positive buttons."

           Uncover Psychology Of Culture

Philosophy, Psychology, and Technology behind Digital Transformation Digital transformation represents a break from the past, with a high level of impact and complexity, Transformation efforts need to be undertaken as the means of getting to a differentiated capability to accomplish a defined goal. It is important to leverage multidisciplinary knowledge as well as taking a structural approach to making radical changes in the underlying processes and functions.

Innatepsychology Psychology has developed more as a science with evidence based practice and a deeper understanding of biology, physiology, brain, and genetics. There are many different psychological theories, which make sense, since human beings are complex and our mind has “genius factors,” to invent, but also could be part of many problems we have in this world we all share together.

Unleashculturepotential
Culture is a collective mindset and attitude. We all succeed together or fail together, culture is invisible, but one of the most crucial success factors that can lift up the spirit of business or intimates the survival of an operatized organization. In fact, culture represents the 'box' in which decisions and actions occur. It becomes the way we discover ourselves, do business to delight customers. It is our brand promise. In essence, enterprise culture is "learned, knowable, measurable, modifiable, and manageable."

Is the Cultural Beast so Hard to Tame
Culture is the collective mindset, attitude, habit and corporate DNA. Most companies have trouble seeing their own culture as they are so immersed in it. Culture can lift their organization up to the next level of growth cycle or sink the business slowly. In fact, organizational culture could be one of the most invisible and intimidating factors to influence their organization’s future.

Leadership Psychology, Philosophy, and Methodology The shift to digital cuts across sectors, geographies and leadership roles and the digital transformation is now spreading rapidly to enable organizations of all shapes and sizes to reinvent themselves. But dealing with challenges and tough problems facing today’s business requires an accelerated digital mindset and open leadership style. To thrive in the exponential digital era, business leaders can see possibilities before others, and they can also tackle great challenges with grand consequences over long time spans. Here are digital leadership psychology, philosophy, and methodology.

Innovativeness

Individual contributions provide the 'building block' of creativity, creativity can manifest in a collective environment.

It’s the beginning of the new year with an innovation theme; being innovative is a growth mindset and proactive attitude. Organizations today have to make strategic choices all the time about where and when and how they innovate, putting emphasis on identifying, developing unique innovation capabilities.

There is a paradigm shift that is taking place in accelerating innovation and building a scalable innovation ecosystem. It’s important to connect wider dots for spurring fresh ideas and catalyzing innovation.

Innovation and contextualization:
Contextualization broadens perspectives and digs deeper; so people can connect wider dots, shape the new box of thinking and work through the context to inspire alliance for innovating. The art and science of innovative problem-solving are in the creation of the context, to capture the objective big picture perspectives. Organizations today are often multicultural, multigenerational and multi-devicing, in order to solve problems creatively, digital leaders and professionals today need to develop their own language, listen to diverse opinions for embracing different perspectives, make the proper framing to gain a contextual understanding of issues in order to come up with innovative solutions.

You cannot wait for the “aha” moments to innovate, keep curious, think profoundly, learn fresh knowledge, and acquire new capabilities. Innovation is the change to tackle complexities of the business dynamic, but within itself, it needs to change as well. Innovation is the process that can be managed and optimized. That means contextual thinking, interdisciplinary knowledge, efficient technological platforms and tools, and structural management practices, etc, are all important factors in innovation management. Ultimately, innovation isn't what you do; it's what you deliver for premium results to delight customers, and how being innovative becomes the state of mind and core differentiator of the business.

Innovation & Introspection: Innovativeness is a state of mind. Introspection helps us open our “mental window” via reflection, learning, understanding, and improving, etc, freeing our mind from mundane tasks, and taking a unique path to rejuvenate passion and generate fresh ideas. Introspection is a sort of mind crafting activity, involving self-reflection and self-discovery, to look in yourself and embrace all of you. Awareness is the light that makes this process smooth. Creative people release a positive aura and create energy. Their intellectual curiosity, proactive attitudes, the blend of knowledge and ingenuity, as well as the right dose of confidence, are all valid within the context of creative intelligence.

With rapid change and overloaded information, introspection is a cognitive process to shift from mindset to mind-flow; it allows the mind to seek possibility, rather than self-limited, finding connections between experiences, people, things, ideas, etc., and making literally or figuratively something new from those insights to spur innovation all the time. If life is a journey to pursue "better you," introspection builds the mental strength to become the updated version of you. To set the innovative tone for the new year, what is needed right now is continuously flexing your mind, completely away from being set in a fixed way via healthy learning cycles and nurturing creativity provocatively.

Innovation and harmonization
: Innovation often happens at the intersection of people and processes. The harmonized workplace is in which the silo has been taken down to keep information flow, decision bottlenecks have been broken down by reducing business tensions, frictions; collaboration and sharing are the norms, learning and creativity are encouraged. The enterprise can renew the creative energy and rejuvenate their organization by developing the culture of learning and engaging customers/partnerships in their continuous digital conversations and feedback management. It also ensures that interdependencies and loyalties between partners are taken into account and builds up a strong innovative ecosystem with harmony.

Creating a context where people can collaborate where they are empowered and respected and co-develop fresh ideas is the essence of innovation excellence and business harmony. The innovation managers need to check: Are management processes developed to help communicate objects and concepts smoothly without “lost in translation.” Are management processes developed to reduce tensions, frictions, and conflicts that arise? Are the practices of innovation management interactional? Innovation leadership is more about influencing, mentoring, empowering, harmonizing and orchestrating, creating a harmonized working environment by communicating smoothly to make collective decisions and taking a collaborative road to innovate and make continuous deliveries.

An enterprise has always been part of simple or complex ecosystems, and it has to be linked to the many and varied “touch points” between itself and the marketplace environment of which it is a part. Often, innovation is a multi-disciplinary effort which would apply nonlinear thinking to provide better opportunities. While the individual contributions provide the 'building block" of creativity, creativity can manifest in a collective environment. Highly innovative organizations embed innovation into every aspect of their organization, manifest creativity from an individual endeavor to a team activity and a collective effort, the horizon of creativity is expanded, creativity effect is amplified and innovation becomes the very theme of the business transformation.
