From idea generation to innovation implementation, planning, doing, checking, and acting are not linear steps, but an iterative business continuum in the digital era.
With the overwhelming growth of information and continuous changes and disruptions, organizations just have to get used to the new normal and learn how to deal with them proactively. To stay competitive, innovation becomes the light every organization is chasing to overcome the challenges. However, innovation is overused and misused by many, obsessively filling all presentations. Sometimes innovation has even become a buzzword to the point that those who truly understand it cannot get the real message out through the "hype" and truly implement innovative changes. To develop innovation as the differentiated competency, companies must go beyond experimenting innovation and commit to taking a systematic scenario to explore innovation in its digital ecosystem for achieving high-value business results.
Know yourself thoroughly: Either at the individual or organizational level, without consciousness, there is no creativity. Consciousness is awareness of the subject you are talking about, your knowledge and strength in the field. When in the grip of the creative urge, there is no thought of self, no ego, it is just about keeping creativity flow. There is no template that you can apply and suddenly you will become creative; it needs to have self-consciousness and it takes practice, practice, and practice more. From the business innovation management perspective, every organization has the capacity to innovate both as one of the business initiatives or in a sustained way; part of the innovation capability coherence comes through the sense of ownership, which is different from managers' "owning" their people. It needs to nurture the culture of authenticity and learning, make people feel comfortable with being who they are, creativity is by nature unique to each person. Collectively, it’s important to develop a working environment in which talented people keep their curiosity, dare to challenge the status quo. In fact, it takes courage to get out of the conventional thinking box, practice creative thinking to come out novel ideas, broaden thoughts and connect wider dots for coming up with alternative solutions to tough problems. Because more often, in the bureaucratic workplace, people gradually lose their curiosity because of the busy routine, they also lose the courage to ask tough questions because they are aware of the consequence when the education or the society favors conventional wisdom and mediocrity. Thus, from innovation management perspective, it’s important to ensure the right people with creative abilities have been assigned to the right role for building highly innovative teams to deliver innovation continually.
Find the possible alternatives to be adopted: Innovation is about figuring out the better ways to do things. Ask "WHAT IF" we do things in a different way or figure out an alternative solution. Always be careful in examining the potential points of engagement, rather than saying "first we'll fix this." For those who are trying to solve problems, they may find the problems evolving as they try different solutions. Innovation can occur anywhere in the organization, and it has to occur in every aspect of the organization. You do need to understand that those solutions may come through back doors and side windows, or have perhaps been hiding in the basement, study the choices and select the best possible implementable alternative. From innovation management perspective, it is not just a mere cumulation of the creative inputs of those involved; it is also not only a synchronizing of their individual inputs to make something that no one individual would achieve, manifest creativity from an individual endeavor to a team activity and a collective effort and develop the creative synergy by enablement, encouragement, and empowerment, the horizon of creativity is expanded. It converges with the concept of innovation that is the management discipline to transform innate ideas and achieve its business value.
Study the choices and select the best possible implementable alternative: The essence of innovation is made of trying new combinations of known things. It's the essence of problem-solving and progress. What many see as innovation is actually a problem-solving scenario - a simple process of deduction to derive a solution drawing from knowledge, experience, and out-of-the-box creativity. The evaluation of the best solution depends on the nature, culture, and strengths of the organization. Every process, every expenditure of time, money, or energy, and every assignment of resources should directly relate back to the "Why.” From the problem-solving perspective, it's about deepening the understanding of the issues, accumulate interdisciplinary knowledge or unique insight, develop a framework to apply creativity for problem-solving in an intelligent manner, study the choices and select the best possible implementable alternatives. If you don’t have a sound solution to each newly created problem, you’ll have very little change to successfully run a high-performance digital business.
Considering your present strengths and weaknesses, and formulate the strategy to implement innovative solutions: To briefly described, "innovation means implementing novel ideas to create value.” Being able to engage in the successful creation of innovations is a very hard work and does include a good strategy, a lot of skills and abilities as well as processes and theories. Digital leaders today must present a good innovation strategy to ensure that the organization is “playing to win,” not just trying not to lose. Understand both individuals’ strength and the collective strength of the organization. It’s important to build up a momentum that draws creative contributions from the participants that they did not previously conceive or understood they were capable of. To align the implementation processes with an innovation strategy, it also needs to lay out different thinking, structures, and solutions to develop into the business potential where organizations are combining all that is available to them in imaginative or advantageous ways. The main challenge organizations face when attempting to digitize and innovate is a consistent process through which they can make the seamless change or develop an idea into fruition. In reality, many companies form and grow on the basis of "idea creation," but then get bogged down when trying to "commercialize" those ideas. It requires a different skill set, focus, and culture. Highly innovative organizations deploy a range of different management methodologies and technologies and tailor their own circumstances for developing the fitting innovation models and practices.
Digital organizations are in the middle of a sea change. There is no template that you can apply and suddenly you become creative, it must be done continually, patiently, and individually. But it is important to realize that there are basic principles and rules that make innovation work. A digital organization can bring greater awareness of intricacies and the systemic value of organizational systems, business capabilities, people dynamics, resource alignment, or technological touches, take the logical innovation scenario to deliver the value-added business results.
