Unconventional Problem-Solving

Solving complex problems today requires perceptive intelligence, multidisciplinary knowledge, profound insight, enriched experiences.

We live in a world in which change is the norm and we confront a number of high complex problems across business disciplines and knowledge domains. The problem-solving logic is just so simple - diagnose the real problem and solve it in the right way.

However, the problem-solving thought process and practices will not be simple for many of today’s complex issues or vexing problems. It’s crucial to understand problems from different perspectives in order to solve them innovatively.

Many of today's problems come from yesterday's solutions:
Due to the “VUCA” characteristics of the digital new normal, business problems become more complex than ever. To just go ahead and fix it carries assumptions, particularly, assumptions about something wrong, limiting, or not working in some way that requires 'fixing.” Unfortunately, too many people are stuck in the mud of the old ways of solving problems. Business managers jump into ‘how,” before digging into ‘why”; put too much effort on the operational side, without challenging the “we always do things like that’ mentality. As a matter of fact, many of today’s problems come from yesterday’s solutions, the right solution depends on the problem, how and to what extent it is manifesting in a way that cries for fixing, from where it emanates the greater context for understanding things from different angles and figuring out alternative ways to shape better solutions.

When you encounter a tough problem, you need to apply deep critical thinking to frame the right problems, and then solve them in a creative way. For many old and emergent problems, you have to challenge automatic assumptions that something needs 'fixing.' The real problem-solving is about seeing a problem and actually discovering a real solution to that problem, not just the band-aid approach to fix the symptoms. To just go ahead and fix it carries assumptions, particularly, assumptions about something wrong, limiting, or not working in some way that requires 'fixing,” from where it emanates the greater context for understanding things from different angles and figuring out alternative ways to shape better solutions.

Lack of capabilities to define and resolve the real problem:
Today’s problems have many shapes and sizes: Some problems are the symptom; other problems seem irrational as they are caused by people’s emotional reaction to a set of circumstances. Problem-solving capability is perhaps one of the most critical capabilities for today’s digital leaders and professionals because both the business environment and the world become over complex and uncertain. Even though you have a good intention to solve problems, perhaps lack of capabilities to define and resolve the real problem, just fix the symptom and cause more serious problems later on.

Keep alert: Trying to fix the wrong cause of a problem will waste time and resources, increasing anxiety. When solving the wrong problems, it’s no surprise that you are going nowhere, causing more issues or getting stuck at the state of problem-solving impasse. if you don’t have a sound solution to each newly created problem, you’ll have very little chances to succeed solving the main problem, because all is connected. Therefore, you have to apply multi-dimensional intelligence that goes into problem identification as well as solution discovery!Being a great problem-solver also means leveraging the necessary information to predict the upcoming risks and help the business prevent potential problems. High mature digital leaders have strong capabilities to solve critical business problems skillfully. It’s not necessary or unrealistic to solve every problem on their own, but they should be responsible to make good decisions and solve right business problems effectively.

Continue to resist looking at new ways to analyze "problems": It’s important to ask tough questions, channel energy, enthusiasm, and ideas, to not only come out one solution to the old or new business problem, but multiple solutions and manage innovation in a structural way. Regardless of which industry or organization you are in, being an innovative leader will need to master the art of creating unique, differentiating business solutions from piles of commoditized technologies and take advantage of the emergent digital trends as well. You seek for inventions, new designs, and creative problem-solving. It drives innovation.

To bridge the gap for solving complex problems, collective wisdom is often the secret source for creative problem-solving. Creative and critical thinkers live out of the box, ask open questions to collect relevant information, and think alternatives. Co-create alternative visions and dream into existence of new solutions, these are the capacities of humans who are not trapped in 'the same level of thinking' as others and keep sharpening problem-solving skills and capabilities. More often than now, many innovative solutions to intriguing problems are made from a much broader and encompassing view that is not possible in linear thinking. It means that never think there is a short list of solutions you can pick from, and always be open to solving the problem in an alternative or better way. Methodologically, creative problem-solving starts with creative communication, sets alternative choices, and then you have to make the best decisions you can, based on connecting unusual dots, identify and prioritize alternative solutions.

Solving complex problems today requires perceptive intelligence, multidisciplinary knowledge, profound insight, enriched experiences, as well as taking an end-to-end response and a structural and an iterative approach. Turn around the tough situations, and enjoy the challenges about complex problem-solving. Highly innovative organizations involve customers, different stakeholders and industry ecosystem participants as active agents, listen to their feedback, involve them in both idea generation, process implementation, and problem solving.
