Understanding Leadership Philosophy

It is imperative that "leadership" can be explained, explored, understood and embraced for it to be of any value via philosophical lenses.

Philosophy is the mother of all sciences even presently philosophy seems to be a completely different discipline from science. Science is the methodical process of identifying scientific reasons, methods, processes, concrete, provable outcomes.

 In terms of our need for philosophy in this era, we need it more than ever because philosophy is the compass of human civilization and there are more people on this planet than ever, we need more people pursuing truth, reality, and wisdom. Leadership philosophy: Do you have one?

Leadership is philosophy and discipline: Philosophy is the history of ideas and an ongoing inquiry into the nature of things based on abstract reasoning. Philosophy involves examining basic concepts such as truth, existence, reality, causality, and freedom. Leadership philosophy is methodical and has deliberate processes for identifying questions, reasoning, identifying faulty reasoning, and thinking outside the box. Leadership authentication comes from the good combination of self-awareness mindset, the color of the character and intuitive gut/heart feeling. It comprises logic, aesthetics, ethics, metaphysics, ontology, and epistemology, and yet by creating a framework for schools of thought, scientific frameworks.

Know thyself is the reflective thinking to enforce effective leadership philosophy to harness management discipline. The best bet is to develop a leader's adaptability and follow the situational model based on context. "Generic" leaders probably existed in the past when the complexities in life were less, technical competencies required minimal, and those being led were less intellectually challenging to lead, motivate and manage. The younger generation today are exposed to much more information and can easily acquire knowledge in most areas they want to engage in. Hence, a leader is expected to be more informative, intelligent and wiser to be able to lead by influence, not by brute force.

Leadership is both abstract and situational: Effective leadership is a good combination of substances plus styles, psychologically, philosophically and methodologically. The leaders need to observe, perceive, and pay attention to the myriad of internal, external, national or global forces that define and influence the way we do business these days. These digital forces must be dealt with, but before they can be dealt with, they must appear on digital leaders' radar screens. Thus, leaders being developed today are taught to be able to lead, focusing on what the situation or issues require, not confuse knowledge with leadership ability.

Vision is a substantial element in digital leadership. It's true that leaders must have a clear vision-not the vision clouded and distorted by rosy colored glasses or narrow-minded perspectives. If the leaders are not willing to mentor the next generation of leaders, it will lead to reduced competitiveness and effectiveness and suboptimal business results. But you need to understand where people are and where they want to go in order to be an effective leader. You need to hold people in high regards, not only for who they are but for the potential that lies inside of them. Leadership is about the respect and understanding of people- transforming a crowd into a workable collective. This is the most elegant, interesting and challenging art.

Leadership is a set of Principles and Practices
: It is sometimes useful to view leadership as a principle and process, not a hierarchy. Leadership is about focus. It is about providing direction, both for oneself and others. It is also about alignment and integration. Great leaders should be ideal mentors, by mentoring you are showing that you value others, and in order to add value to others There are those who seek the justification of leadership via virtuous qualities, but its reality is a cultural sanctioning of a means to an end. If leadership is immature: Is such lack of consensus, due to mediocre judgement or poor communication/mentoring skills of the leader? Or is it due to different values of the followers? All training/ development initiatives which have a major impact on the culture of the organization are steered by the top leadership via leading by example.

Leaders not only learn themselves but also advocate a culture of learning. They need to be innovative and really consider where there is value and real learning within an organization. It is imperative that "leadership" can be explained, explored, understood and embraced for it to be of any value via philosophical lenses. Transformative leaders can empathetically let people know that they are part of something bigger than just keeping the trains running on time. They can make big differences by exploring who they are, who they want to be, as well as how they can do things differently.
