Transforming IT from Monolithic Hardware Oriented to Mosaic Software Driven

The balance of art and science in IT is how to enforce scientific discipline, make continuous efforts in building better products/services to accelerate IT performance and unlock IT potential.

With overwhelming growth of information and rapid changes, the role of IT in the current business environment should become strategic, enable business outcomes, build organizational competency, and catalyze business growth. IT leaders need to make an objective assessment: What’s the focal point of IT- monolithic hardware oriented, or  bits & bytes information driven? Inside-out operation-driven or outside-in customer-centric? Transaction or transformation focus?

Digital IT shifts from a monolithic hardware oriented support center to a mosaic information-driven "digital brain": Traditional IT organizations are perceived as an isolated function with monolithic hardware boxes, tangled wires, geek types of IT staff who speak a different language and lack of business acumen. The black and white images of IT organization is kind of boring and out of fashion. To break the mold, IT needs to reinvent itself as a mosaic style information-driven “digital brain,” to connect people with the right information at the right time and location, to ensure that accurate information is accessible and shared within relevant business functions to make right decisions. Information is the gold mine all forward-thinking organizations dig into for capturing business foresight and customer insight, That information and focus must be apparent throughout the organization. IT is in a unique position to lead with information in the corporate ecosystem, which not only contains knowledge, but also creates insight and builds new knowledge to catalyze business innovation.

IT is transforming from the sum of services or processes, or monolithic hardware to the mosaic style linchpin of business capabilities and competencies: IT can weave all necessary hard and soft elements to build a set of value-added digital capabilities and core competencies, transforming IT from the sum of services or processes, or monolithic hardware to "digital linchpin.” Once their orientation shifts towards this plane, it is easier to then optimize their organizations to execute for long-term value creation. CIOs must astutely focus on envisioning, innovating, and coaching, shape a high performance IT which can continually deliver what the business needs and maximize the digital potential of the company. IT enabled organizational competencies enables the business to overcome business challenges and improve the overall organizational changeability and maturity.

IT is transforming from a monolith style back office function to a mosaic style software startup: Digital IT is a business inside the business to focus on the top-line business growth and profitability. IT entrepreneurialism becomes a new fixture for innovating IT. Running IT as the software startup is simply about taking bold initiatives to reinvent IT by cultivating the new attitude and fusing the fresh energy, creating new revenue streams, exploring emerging business opportunities, substantiating their competitive position, affecting the market landscape, and driving business growth. In the ever-evolving digital economy, The SW applications are a key part of the core value chain of the business, and they manage applications with incentives on how much revenue they generate, on customer satisfaction, on strong quality assurance, or on market acceptance, etc. Information Technology permeates into every corner of the organization. Digital IT should go smarter, flexible, and faster, with continuous delivery and improve customer satisfaction consistently.

Now with emergent lightweight digital technologies and exponential growth of information,"IT" has been demystified, become more strategic and transparent and is aggressively sought after and embraced by the business. The balance of art and science in IT is how to enforce scientific discipline, make continuous efforts in building better products/services to accelerate IT performance and unlock IT potential.
