Organizations are made by people and people are the key element in self-adaptive organisms.
Adaptability starts at the mindset level: Each person has a different level of consciousness or knowledge, and reacts to environmental changes differently. An adaptive mind can converge conscious thinking and unconscious or inner realm, and has better learning capability to adapt to a changing environment.
Often, people’s actions or reactions are linked with their character, personality, the information they have and with the way other people share and collaborate with them accordingly. Thanks to rapid evolution in science and technology, we are discovering many things about our cognitive abilities, behaviors, attitudes, and skills. Self-adaptation is faster if made with the full involvement of people in organizational change.
Develop adaptability via getting yourself and others into actions: Change isn't always in our control, but it is amazing how much control we have in adapting to it. Developing adaptability takes effort and time. Being self-adaptive either individually or at the organizational level helps with capacity for personal transformation and evolution.
In the organizational level, self-adaptation is faster if made with the full involvement of people in organizational change, without making "big plans" or "blueprint.” The “incremental consciousness” about our own potentials is changing the way we see ourselves, our roles into a community: a team or a company, as well as the level of adaptability. Collaboratively, let people know you are going to help them learn, become more adaptive to the changing environment and unlock performance.
The goal of organizational design and structure tuning is to make hierarchical systems adaptive so that they can adapt themselves to the changed circumstances quickly and smoothly. People are able to adapt themselves and their organization through setting a common agenda, negotiating win-win situations, taking a collaborative and peer to peer approach better than using a stage and gate approach. Across boundary communication, mass collaboration, are important to enforce organizational flexibility and resilience to ensure high-adaptation and accountability.
Organizations are made by people and people are the key element in self-adaptive organisms. What enables a self-adaptive organism is an information-driven process feeding and sustaining growth and balance cycle. Either people or organizations as systems, a self-adaptive system is able to re-configure its own structure and change its own behavior during the execution of its adaptation to environmental changes, continuously evolving, balancing, and growing to reach the next level of effectiveness and maturity.
