The hyperconnectivity nature of digital breaks down the functional, geographical, industrial territories, businesses today become much more interconnected and interdependent than ever.

To survive the fierce competition and thrive with the long-term business advantage, holistic oversight is crucial to identify crucial problems, strengthen the weakest link in business management, laser focus on the most critical perspectives in order to steer the business in the right direction, and ensure business success in the long run.

It takes holistic oversight to fix the misperception by exploring multiple thought processes, broadening the perspective of understanding problems from different angles: The digital business today is not only just working within the industry, but also permeating a cross-ecosystem which is dynamic, and interactive. If there's a lack of quality information and holistic understanding, the business intends to fix symptoms but cause more problems later on or perhaps on the other side of the company. Thus, holistic overseers are in demand to capture the bigger picture, see both the forest and the trees, ask insightful questions: What is the bigger picture here? How is your current problem/goal related to the bigger problems or greater context? Behind every problem is a relationship dynamic out of alignment. It takes a holistic view, calls for systems thinking to understand and handle issues from different angles, and encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration for problem-solving.

Holistic thinking involves understanding a business system by sensing its large-scale patterns and addressing the big picture. To understand the digital business or the world as a complex adaptive system requires an understanding of how the things have come together, being 'built,” as well as how to leverage the holistic view to integrate and innovate, to solve chains of problems smoothly. It takes an outlier's lens to criticize the business management by questioning wisely and bringing up holistic perspectives continually. Doing this will definitely pay huge dividends.

It requires insightful understanding to uncover patterns, dig into the root cause, to solve problems in a structural way:

Understanding requires a person's ability to grasp or comprehend information: How deep your understanding is based on the logic, lenses, perceptions, philosophy, methodology you leverage to interpret things.

If the situation is very natural and fluid, with a lot of inter-dependencies, the effectiveness of strategic decision making has to weigh in multiple factors and needs to search for profound understanding; insightful overseers can sense emergent opportunities and predict potential risks, oversee the business management discipline effectively, seek out knowledge, gain an in-depth understanding of issues or people, address people’s ignorance and assumptions, in order to solve problems in a structural way based on coherent information, technical expertise, and skillful problem-solvers.
