"Change Insight" Book Insight: Initiative & Improvement

Innovation leaders need to clarify the goals and scenarios of innovation by asking themselves or others’ relevant questions and take initiatives to drive innovation efforts systematically.

Change is inevitable, organizational change has become a common practice within an organization, but too often changes are made as a reaction to outer impulses, crisis, and demands. This is the bureaucracy’s way of meeting the challenges. A digital transformation is achieved via dynamic Strategy-Execution-Change lifecycle management, although it is not all linear steps, but an iterative, ongoing and upgoing change continuum.

Change is never for its own sake, any business initiative, especially change, should be viewed as an "opportunity" for solving business problems, improving employee productivity, delighting customers, optimizing costs or improving business products/services/processes.

Due to the low success rate, organizations should ideally have a sustainable approach to innovation. The robust process and tools that enable any business entity to generate winning concepts on a consistent basis, is the prerequisite for sustaining business advantage and growth. IT-Initiative CIOs can convey the vision at the front, but lead the change from behind. Either fast-growing businesses or well-established organizations have to continuously adapt to the numerous changes and well chart the path to significant business transformations such as digitalization or globalization, should CIOs take the initiative to promote such strategic business initiatives, if so, shall they promote at the front or lead from behind?

Initiating-change To reinvent IT from a change laggard to the change organization of the company, IT should ensure its strategy implementation allows for digital speed, and responsiveness to be seen by the business as an enabler, not an overhead. The business-engaged CIO is the right type of digital leader to run a proactive IT and keep navigating during rough sea journeys of large or small changes. Change management often goes hand-in-hand with the strategy management. The CIO as “Chief Initiative Officer” can drive changes and implement the business strategy execution through constructive business-IT relationships, ensuring the maturity level of the IT organization matches the requirements of the business strategy.
