Improve Change Capacity by Taking Multidisciplinary Management Approach

The digital world is information-intensive and technology-driven, the digital transformation is multidimensional and evolutionary.

Digital transformation represents the next stage of organizational maturity which will improve how the enterprise works and interacts with its ecosystem and deals with the challenge of “VUCA” digital new normal.

It requires accelerated digital mindsets and takes a multidisciplinary management approach to improve the change capacity of the business and unlock business performance.

Conflict management:
Digital organizations and their people must learn through their interactions with the business environment, and ride the learning curve to improve the change capacity of the business. It is natural if a bunch of people is working in a team towards the common goal, there will be conflicts and it is the managers’ top duty to resolve those issues without any bias for the smooth functioning. There are both internal and external conflicts. Conflicts are often caused by unhealthy competition, hostility, and excessive emotional involvement, how to handle them effectively is the art and science of change management.

In practice, the right way to deal with conflict is to identify them right at the start, find the root causes, and keep pondering: How aware are you of what triggers the conflict, and what are the specific ways to better manage them before and after the buttons to trigger the conflict are pushed. How capable are you at utilizing the specific behaviors known to make conflicts more productive in order to encourage constructive behavior? Having the right dose of conflicts in the team is sometimes productive if it could lead to open-minded brainstorming and create a sense of positive competition in the team, and a number of times, a lot of new ideas come up for solving some high challenging issues. Effective Change Management can deal with conflict skillfully to achieve harmony and transform conflict into creative competency.

Feedback management: We don't know our impact on others until they tell us. Feedback is about how to drive progressive change and improve performance; it is always about the future to keep it relevant. Lack of effective feedback usually deepens change management gaps, causes dysfunctional behaviors, and creates measurement blind spots. Feedback needs to be continuous, as close to real-time as possible, not only helps to act but aids to feedforward for achieving measurable performance results.

Feedback on business action/impacts/outcomes, feedback on project realization/implementation, feedback on organizational potential can significantly improve business performance. Feedback is a solution to the problem of cluelessness, feedback should always be genuinely precise, proper, and substantive. The purpose of the feedback is oriented towards expected behavior, makes a continuous and measurable improvement, and cultivates the culture of high performance.

Prioritization/Time management: Upon increasing paces of changes, the reality is that there are a lot of things that can go wrong and it is not always easy to identify what is important. There are three components of action - the ones that need immediate attention, the ones that have a well-thought-out action and long term vision, and the ones you need not worry about too much. Time management prioritizes actions. Prioritization is critical as the alternative is a land grab for time or resources. It is difficult to take the decisions in which order to do the changes and prioritize between changes. It is important to prioritize, make use of clear targets, communication, and embed prioritization mechanisms into the multitude of management disciplines.

The time management skill helps us decide the course. We need to be very vigilant about time. Time management removes fears, the stress of pressures; it helps in planning and actions. It takes time management skills for the "immediate action,” to save time either via collaboration or delegation. Effective time management improves productivity, boosts creativity, enforces change management discipline, and makes you creative-oriented, mature, and generous enough to share the experience of the success journey of change.

The digital world is information-intensive and technology-driven, the digital transformation is multidimensional and evolutionary. Companies don’t exist in silos but within systems, it is critical to take a multidisciplinary management approach to manage both tangible and intangible business elements, evolving emerging trends and dynamic ecosystems, and building change capacity of the business.
