The Very Characteristics of the Hybrid Innovation Ecosystem

The digital innovation ecosystem is dynamic, informative, expansive, interdependent, and hyperconnected.

The evolution of innovation only exists in open environments or the ecosystem. An innovation ecosystem should fully cover a wide enough direction, including both incremental innovation and breakthrough innovation so that companies can operate within ecosystems to deliver innovative business solutions to customers.

Here is a set of characteristics of the hybrid innovation ecosystem.

Openness: Due to the increasing pace of changes, innovation can happen anywhere across the organization and its ecosystem. A comprehensive innovation framework with all important enterprise components is a great tool to intensify innovation with focus and manage innovation in a structural way. It also allows information exchange and participants involvement, to ensure that interdependencies and loyalties between partners are taken into account and build up a strong innovation engine, and further evolve to weave an open and dynamic innovation ecosystem.

Innovation happens frictionlessly in an open environment, in fact, the business and economic environment play an important role in sparking creativity and catalyze innovation. There are both tangible and intangible elements that need to be knitted into the unique innovation competency of the organization. An open innovation platform enables companies to integrate critical components of innovation such as process, technology, culture and supports all sorts of innovation efforts to maximize business potential.

Variety: Today’s information technology enables companies to leverage their various environments, or ecosystems, to chase innovation and accelerate performance. Digital variety is a switch to turn on the innovation light bulb. Focusing on digital variety will force you to confront fresh ideas, the variety of points of view or ideas directly contribute to the business value in terms of engagement, productivity, and profitability. The essence of innovation is made of trying new combinations of old or new things, embracing a new concept that you may have never imagined, and connecting wider dots to trigger innovation.

The variety of ideas or opinions should lead to “inspirations” which will further fuel more innovation. The variety of innovation portfolio is to build a varying set of unique business competency. The variety of components such as innovation leadership, culture, capability, practices, tools, recognition system measurements, risk approach in an effective innovation environment, or ecosystem by themselves may not cause a good environment, but collectively, they can and weave an innovation ecosystem frictionlessly.

Complexity: Organizations are complex, people are complex, and digital business ecosystems are complex. There are many shades of corporate complexity today, such as hierarchical complexity, information density, design complexity, or network complexity, etc. Innovation management is complex as well nowadays due to hyper-connectivity, interdependence, and nonlinearity of digital new normal. The unnecessary complexities such as overly complicated processes or rigid rules perhaps easily stifle innovation as organizations get locked into huge processes around building extensive business cases. One of the very goals for innovation management is to simplify the old way to do things or to manage complexity in an optimal manner.

Due to the fact that innovating in today’s digital world has become increasingly complex in nature, often, organizations can no longer rely on a single individual or team to drive innovation. There are needed complexities such as design complexity that competitors cannot imitate easily, or the collaboration complexity that makes people more productive and business more innovative. Usually, innovation either through a need seeker or technology driver is the key factor to weave needed complexity in order. In fact, a certain level of needed complexity is a foundation to reach the next level of innovation management.

Diversification: Digital organizations are diversified with a multigenerational, multicultural workforce using multidevice to do multitasking and brainstorm diverse ideas and realize their business value. Diversification is the hidden dimension to spark innovation, and catalyze digital transformation. There is a multitude of hyperdiverse perspectives such as creative diversity, cognitive diversity, cultural diversity, skill/capability diversity, and personality diversity, etc. The change/innovation management should orient people and make them aware of the power of diversity as the hotbed of creativity, help them understand the value of harnessing cognitive differences, encourage them to embrace diverse points of view, and nurture their creativity to unleash their pot.

Hyperdiversity includes cognitive differences, levels of capabilities, complementary experiences, the spectrum of skills, unique competencies, cultural perspectives, and personalities. As we bring more people into the innovation dialog, we increase the probability of those various assumptions surfacing as each person filters different things. Thus, organizations need to move the needle of diversification, bring in fresh ideas and new perspectives to mind innovation gaps, accelerate and build a better future together, to reach the next level of business growth and organizational maturity.

Collaboration: The exponential growth of information and emerging digital technologies enables companies to leverage their ecosystems which draw mutually supportive companies together from multiple industries that seek fresh ideas collectively and co-solve common issues creatively and collaboratively. In reality, many companies that get stuck at the lower level of organizational maturity have never been better positioned to break out of a static industry box and engage in mass collaborations to enforce innovation. Highly innovative companies leverage digital platforms or collaboration tools to develop innovation clusters or hubs that cross physical boundaries for enabling people to exchange ideas and catalyze digital innovation.

People become the center of innovation management and they are the major focus for innovation process and accomplishment. It is important to be able to co-create in a digital ecosystem. Innovation is often a multi-disciplinary effort. The innovation collaboration teams embrace multiple disciplines and understand how systems work, and this yields a competitive advantage. A co-creation innovation strategy treats customers, channel partners, suppliers, and industry ecosystem participants as active agents, applying collaborative methodologies to orchestrate their organization’s talent and bring out their collective best thinking to accelerate innovation and optimize their solution forming capabilities.

Innovations in the digital era are coming at a seemingly much fast pace, more changes, and more potential disruptions, and therefore, innovation management also becomes more complex and volatile, and often a multi-disciplinary effort. The digital innovation ecosystem is dynamic, informative, expansive, interdependent, and hyperconnected. It should fully embrace the full spectrum of innovation categories to reach the next level of the business growth cycle and drive progressive change effortlessly.
