unifiedinformationarchitecture

Information Management Principle; recognize and manage complexity; focus on adoption; prioritize according to business needs, deliver tangible & visible benefits.

Business operates in the real world, and the real world is muddy, chaotic, with overwhelming information and emerging events and activities. There are always different complexities at a different time or dimension and there are multilateral management approaches to run an information intensive business.

Organizations need an integral management discipline with a set of efficient tools that deal with their corporate environment inundated with data to streamlining information flow, not a focus on making the data adapt to somewhat weaker tools. Effective Information Management makes information available and useful, exert lots of intelligence, do analytics, look for insights, leverage imagination, but make validation and predictability, and keep “the end in mind”- accelerate business performance.

Establishes the informational occurrences required for all management & accomplishment elements:
Modern businesses are systems inundated with overwhelming growth of information, information, with the inclusiveness of data as input, is the primary driver of decisions when they apply to automated systems, not human beings. In many organizations that are getting stuck in the reactive business mode, a key piece of information—information around environmental and social concerns, has been missing from most business operations, so they are slow to decide, and lack business insight to manage business transformation. Information Management is the overall process of aligning the use of information through the management practices. The information management leaders should keep checking: What information do you have, in what format and the location and method is it held? Does information quality become a critical problem that compromises the business’s credibility or is information management the core strength that enables the organization to manage opportunities and risks accordingly.

With information as a glue, the component parts of a system can best be understood in the context of relationships with each other and with other systems, rather than in isolation. Information interactions at various levels of an enterprise inform and influence business management effectiveness at the different levels of the organization. Potential information value all depends on how the information will be used again in the future by standardizing information format and improving data quality. Giving the user a common language for universal elements of the data that they can use to determine the "quality" for usage. It is also important to leverage data quality and cost/benefit analysis. The effective and productive Information Management activities and scenarios should understand and manage complexity, know how to prioritize based on the business needs, communicate extensively, focus on information refinement and adoption to achieve its business value.

Establishes optimized structures for best informational application and processes: Information and process are the two sides of the coin of effective business management. Siloed data or inconsistent or broken business processes often result in significant data inconsistencies. Information is the connection between two processes and a process is the connection between two information "states" - input & out in a variety of forms. Streamlining and standardizing data management processes is an essential prerequisite to providing effective integration solutions, achieving data synchronization, and enforcing process optimization. Information is contextual, it’s important to establish optimized structure for implementing information applications and building formal and complete informational design capability.

Every forethoughtful organization is the balanced transaction-transformation continuum. Enterprises have parts of their business that are transaction-oriented and therefore process intensive, and parts of their business which are information intensive. Information is the gold mine they all dig into these days. Truth comes from data void of analogy, bias, irrelevant noise, and complexity, resulting in a clear uncompromised focus on what’s most important. The debate of Data/Information/Knowledge cannot be avoided, instead, it becomes significantly critical to run an information-based transformative organization to deal with a huge amount of changing data from their business context; select and process a subset into information relevant for their concerns; use that refined information as business insight to orchestrate change systematically.

Provides real-time inputs to the Information Architecture: Organizations need to continue optimizing Business Architecture as an important tool to make strategic alignment, for facilitating business communication and planning, deliberating, sustaining, and monitoring balance between knowing where you've been, where you are, and where you want to go. Information architecture, as a subsystem of business architecture, like the organization’s nervous system, orchestrates information into the knowledge/insight in enabling business collaboration and optimization. Information Management provides real-time inputs to the architecture that covers management, governance, and accomplishment (includes strategic, tactical and operational) by identifying weaknesses and priorities in strategy formulation; roll-out; and incorporating cultural requirements into strategic planning and execution.

In practice, information/knowledge management in many organizations are too hierarchical, too centralized for moving with faster speed. Information architecture design and management activities and capability should understand and manage complexity, more attention needs to be placed on the conditions that allow information to flow and generate value rather than try to manipulate or control information. Organizations, especially large enterprises should develop a practical information technology architecture as a framework to concentrate on the business information requirements that support the company’s growth, know how to prioritize based on the business needs, communicate extensively, and improve decision effectiveness, to achieve the value of corporate information as a resource and define how it should be used strategically to best business advantage.

The importance of data and its analysis leads to the critical elements of knowledge, clarity and insight. Technically, information is nothing until it helps to create multifaceted business value. The key principles to ensure that Information Management activities are effective and successful; recognize and manage complexity; focus on adoption; prioritize according to business needs, deliver tangible & visible benefits.
