Outlier

We all should desire to become the “outlier” in a certain area, broaden our points of interest and try new things to extend our thinking box, experiment with better ways to do things, and take alternative routes to reach our destination...

Outliers have interdisciplinary knowledge, and their imagination is not constrained by the knowledge, they have a growth mind, leverage critical thinking, and creativity. Outliers practice out-of-the-box thinking all the time, they absorb new knowledge and expand their thinking box.

A visionary is often an outlier - the one who steps out of a conventional thinking box, or linear patterns: Visionaries could see things further or deeper. In statistics, an outlier is an observation point that is distant from other observations. If your focus is on forecasting, you need to understand outliers, and perhaps refine your model. Many things outside of the box yesterday have become the new normal today. An outlier’s mind helps to inform, innovate, and inspire changes from mindset, attitude, and behavior. So an outlier is a visionary change agent.

Outliers have an open mind that holds onto its beliefs while being prepared to consider other perspectives should they make sense: When people leave the inside box of thoughts and standards to seek additional knowledge and experience, they are stepping outside that box into unfamiliar territory, get to know the complementary ideas, listen to the other side of stories, and attract even the opposite viewpoints. An outlier is a great bridge to mind differences, lubricate communication and enhance collaboration, and lead toward the future harmoniously.

An outlier is creatively disruptive, breaking down silos, updating digital rules, and creating new knowledge: They refuse to be bound by constraints and limitations and a pursuit of possibilities rather than impossibilities. Sometimes the team or the organization goes stale, it’s necessary to tap bright outliers who can see through things from different angles because they keep a certain distance from that environment and they can practice out-of-the-box thinking all the time. The bright outliers help to rejuvenate a culture of creativity by inspiring people to become creatively disruptive and dare to be a misfit. An outlier is a bold innovator.
