 Corporate board directors as senior leadership have to make influence from mindset to attitude to behavior, evolving to what is needed next for radical changes and societal advancements.

We are experiencing the paradigm shift from silo-driven organizational setting to hyper-connected human society; from the industrial age with information scarcity to the digital era with knowledge fluidity and creative abundance. The corporate board's leadership discipline has a positive correlation with the degree of uncertainty and unpredictability. 

At a senior level, leadership is the adventure to set a clear vision, have confidence and insight to explore the unknown, steering the organization on the right path for reaching the destination ultimately. it is about providing direction, alignment and integration, having high abilities to understand and handle issues from different angles, encouraging cross-boundary collaboration and healthy competition to lead transformative changes forward effectively.

Cross-disciplinary leadership: Businesses today become much more nonlinear, interconnected and interdependent than ever, top corporate board leaders need to have broader business acumen, interdisciplinary knowledge, cross-functional experience, and expert power to amplify leadership influence. In reality though, the mindsets of many senior leaders today, shaped a couple of decades ago, haven’t been updated completely yet; traditional boardrooms are compliance driven, homogeneous settings, enlarging the multitude of gaps and decreasing leadership effectiveness. Thus, forward-looking corporate boards need to become more inclusive, advocate innovation, focusing on both performance and compliance as they are the two sides of the same coin. Insightful BoD leaders present a proactive attitude to participate in strategy-making, identify and envision a worthy objective, coach the management and engage people to work hard for accelerating performance.

The border of knowledge domains is blurred and the scope of knowledge is expanded in the continual base in the hyper-connected and interdependent world. It requires fundamentally different mindsets and paradigms such as accepting that leadership disciplines and influence is multifaceted, command & control style leadership is gradually losing its steam. Cross-disciplinary leaders board leaders know how to carry themselves in most contexts based on a number of factors such as the purpose to lead, multidimensional intelligence, cross-disciplinary knowledge and experience, etc, to orchestrate multidimensional changes, and harmonize human society.

Paradoxical leadership:
Our complex world is a paradoxical reality with a mix of truth & myth, solid and flow, brightness & darkness. Discovering the truth from the myth requires paradoxical analysis to understand the two sides of the coin, listen to the two versions of stories. Effective leaders display a marked level of ease and comfort when dealing with a paradox which are conflicting choices or conditions that demand equal attention. In fact, leading complex digital organizations is a challenge that requires paradoxical thinking, integral capabilities, behavioral complexity and differentiated competencies for balancing powerful, often paradoxical priorities, to transcend rational management into a holistic leadership approach. Corporate board directors with paradoxical intelligence can keep a balanced point of view, without any kind of extreme thinking, dig deeper into the root causes of problems and deal with complexity effectively.

The real boardroom dilemma is that driving the business forward is extremely difficult in today’s “VUCA” digital new normal. Being a leader to practice paradoxical thinking is about keeping the state of psychological balance with the right dose of ego, offering diversified insight into tough situations, seeing things from a different angle and coming out with multifaceted perspectives and balanced viewpoints, setting good policies to encourage desired attitude and behaviors, striking the right balance of business transformation and transaction. A paradoxical board can set the tones to practice situational leadership, advocate changes, also keep things stable; ensure doing the right things before doing things right, manage emotions and drive digital continuum in an elegant and innovative way.

Global leadership:
We live in a world in which change is the norm, one of the most important aspects for grooming world-class leadership is the ability to adapt, model, and influence positive change. The world-class insight is based on the updated global view that looks at problems or issues in such a way that a solution emerges through an interdisciplinary and multicultural approach involving intellectual capital, global psychological capital, and social capital collaboratively to overcome common challenges and initiate cross-boundary problem-solving scenarios.

Corporate boards set the culture tone in their organizations. Great leaders build an inclusive and a fearless working environment to spur creativity; recognize the gifts that all people have and are willing to share the leadership role; support people and also stretch them to live to their full potential, both individually and as members of a high performing team. The global organizational leadership is shifting toward grooming a core set of leadership skills embodying effective communication in networks of global conversations that inspire creativity in diverse domains of expertise to lead diversified people working collaboratively for unleashing collective human potential.
