Creativity with Multifaceted Truth and Myth

Nurturing creativity is a journey, with a connected world image, global consciousness, and cognitive intelligence, etc.

Creativity is an innate process to generate novel ideas. It is often metaphorized as “Out-of-Box” thinking, sometimes it is misunderstood as less thinking or gut feeling. Creativity today asks for a new mindset, it has many dimensions, with multi-faceted truth and myth, manifold knowledge, and incredible imagination.

Creativity and attitude: Intellectual curiosity is one of the key ingredients to spur creativity. Truly curious people usually have a “beginner’s mindset,” they are more interested in what they don't know rather than just providing answers to show what they do know. They are also able to talk and actively listen to one another, create excitement that propels good ideas to be formed. By stepping outside of the comfort zone, they can break down the old box of knowledge, explore the unknown, connect the wide dots to create new ideas continuously.

When in the grip of the creative urge, there is no thought of self, no ego. The failure can be redefined as "Not TRYING." If you don’t try, then you fail. Attitude matters, as it refines one’s commitment to creativity, understand the circumstance profoundly, practice deep listening skills, empty the mindset of how things are "usually" solved, and become more open-minded to experiment with new ways to do things and come up with better solutions.

Creativity is, by nature, unique to each person. As we each have different cognitive styles, personalities, knowledge, or life experiences. There is no template which we can apply and suddenly become creative. As the ability to think and produce, creativity requires a certain degree of independence and mental balance. It is embodied in the act of creating the self-creation of a “self-story.” In this way, we are able to be assertive and stay the course. It is often true that if we have too much knowledge on a topic, we will be bound by it, limit our imagination, thus, stifle creativity. We all should broaden the points of interest and try new things to extend the thinking box, have the proper psychological level of inner security, positive attitude, and genuine autonomy. The most important element is the attitude put to increase the chance of generating creative ideas, tolerate risks, and be confident to move the ideas forward.

Creativity & logic: Almost every job needs some level of logic and creativity in modern society. Being creative does not necessarily mean you are completely spontaneous or lack logic. Logic is neither equal to conventional wisdom nor linear understanding nor arithmetic rules only. Creativity and logic actually are the “hybrid truth.” Creativity is about connecting interdisciplinary dots, while logic is perhaps the very clue hidden in it and the abstract across disciplinary domains. The right dose of “gut feeling” supported by good logic enables us to capture the flash of ideas or unique insight. The exponential growth of information brings abundant ideas. But it takes logic to recognize, filter, or deal with them, and implement ideas successfully.

Creativity is infused with an inner cohesion, hidden logic, emotional wholeness and comes from a unique vision. Logic enables us to see underneath the surface, and unpuzzle the myth. In fact, discovering the "truth" requires some logical analysis to understand multiple opinions and emotions which trigger creativity. The goal is to solve problems in alternative ways. It often takes a logical mind to determine if a creative solution will work. You have to have the right logic to see which creative solution works best to solve your problem. To become more innovative for not only generating fresh ideas but also implementing them smoothly, well trained digital professionals or leaders today need to retool their mind and think in a more logical way in order to amplify their creativity.

Creativity & intelligence: Creativity is a complex, multifaceted thought process such as association, perspective-shifting, opposites, etc. The original germ of a creative idea is often, if not always arrived at through the interaction of ideas from different domains of thoughts and experiences, information without boundary, or cross-domain knowledge. Creativity is a high level of thinking because it regularly imposes a higher cognitive load and evolves multiple thought processes such as emergent, divergent, convergent, and generative, etc., to bridge the gap between vision and reality and create energy for fusing creativity.

Creativity happens on both unconscious and conscious levels. Creativity is not just about "out-of-the-box" thinking, to be creative, you need to re-frame the new box thinking. Creativity is an innate process that includes systems thinking, strategic thinking, divergent thinking, and many other thought processes, etc., to generate unusual combinations of ideas or insight, which are all interlinked attributes in varying degrees depending on our mental models, perspectives, or distinctions, etc. Creative people consciously use different kinds of thought processes that hold onto their natural connectivity while being prepared to connect the dots even in the opposite direction should they make sense to generate fresh ideas and create business value.

Do not let knowledge deter your imagination, stifle your creativity, or block your insight. Keep minds flowing to release the positive energy, out of this comes a beautiful thing, the freedom of choice and the abundant seeds of creativity. Nurturing creativity is a journey, with a connected world image, global consciousness, and cognitive intelligence, etc. A re-connection of images of thoughts and ideas that spark new thoughts both to ourselves and others. And because we are challenged to put it all together, we appreciate the journey. The greater the journey, the greater the success.
