Governance must be viewed and assessed at various enterprise level to enhance management effectiveness and improve organizational maturity.

Governance is steering, it's neither linear nor single dimension; governance groups will oversee and monitor alignment and progress against Strategy, Plan, Policy, Process, People, etc, of the company. The board of directors is the governance group for the senior leadership team and so on down the management hierarchy.

Governance & policy, process: The policy is a set of principles for decision making or guidelines to drive behaviors. Policies need to serve a purpose. Making good policy is actually part of governance discipline. The policy is implemented via a protocol, process or practice.

Policy and process management are interdependent. No policy works effectively without coherent processes. The policy is focused on supporting business processes, as well, etc. A process in and of itself must be governed or it won't be followed and the best procedure or program cannot enforce it, without policy. Top leaders are both policy makers and followers, to encourage good attitude and behavior for driving desired changes.

GRC integration & boardroom strategic oversight: Governance groups such as corporate boards do not participate in the day-to-day operation of the organization. That is the responsibility of management. No manager should govern their own function. Each function should have a governance group. Governance and management mutually reinforce each other.

There are strong governance mechanisms embedded into crucial management disciplines. No governance works without an effective integration. With boardroom strategic oversight and enterprise architects’ overview,  organizations can enforce technical integration, operations integration, governance integration, GRC policy integration or customer-centric integration to ensure that the organization as a whole is superior to the sum of pieces.

Governance & people:
Do people need to be forced to comply with governance, risk, and compliance activity or do they naturally consider it as part of their daily job? People in high-performance organizations follow good policies voluntarily for their own benefit and make the workplace highly engaging, productive, autonomous, innovative.

Establishing policies and procedures help to ensure understanding, ownership, and accountability by solid management disciplines and employee accountability. For an organization embarking on a business transformation journey to achieve people-centricity, it is great to start at the top, cultivating governance fluency and risk intelligent culture. It is critical to look at leadership, culture, staff training for enforcing GRC discipline to improve overall business effectiveness.

Re-imagining the future of business is exciting, but investigating the different paths for unlocking business performance and potential is challenging. Governance must be viewed and assessed at various enterprise levels to enhance management effectiveness and improve organizational maturity.
