Nowadays, we shift from the silo based industrial age with information scarcity to the hyper-connected digital era with knowledge abundance. The information savvy workforce , along with the unprecedented convenience brought by advanced technology opens a new chapter of human progress. 

Research on varying subjects, especially cross-disciplinarily, becomes more important to investigate the cause-effect of varying complex problems, uncover the myths, discover the truth, generate fresh insight, and pursue ultimate wisdom to lift human society up toward the next level of advancement .

Investigative research: Human societies are complex with a long history; from past to present, quite a lot of complex problems haven’t been solved thoroughly. Thus, research on varying subject domains helps to dig deeper, investigate cause-effects, discover hidden patterns, explore the “art of possibility.” The assumption that there is a single cause to an intriguing "problem" in a complex adaptive world system is unhelpful. There are multiple, inter-related dynamics, analysis, synthesis, critical reasoning or creative thinking, etc, are all good cognitive techniques to look for patterns, rather than isolating causes; clarify logic and articulate cause-effects. Will the same cause likely happen again? Are there better solutions available?

The goal-driven investigative research starts with insightful questions such as: How is this happening, and why? How is this possible, when is this happening? What leverage points are there to handle issues smoothly? Etc. The goal is to ask a series of questions in order to have the whole story of the event, and to see the causality of the important elements of the story ideas. As an insightful researcher, you apply the “WHY” staircase technique many times over, leverage a structured research methodology that allows you to capture and analyze the results; explore the relationships and interactions between different elements; build confidence that you have applied sufficient rigor in the cause-effect analysis.

Interdisciplinary research:
Nowadays the borders of knowledge domain, industry domains are blurred; and the scope of knowledge is expanded in the continual base. However, many managers or professionals today still apply silo mindsets to new ways of researching, organizing, creating a multitude of gaps (cognitive gaps, motivational gaps, resource gaps, etc) blocking the way of advanced research on varying topics. It is imperative to explore different views, interdisciplinary knowledge to broaden perspectives, gain an in-depth understanding of certain topics or problems that may occur and develop a holistic approach to advanced research.

In this information exponential era, we will be confronting a number of high-complex problems and unprecedented uncertainty; interdisciplinary science can be applied to research by integrating multidisciplinary rules, methodologies & practices. Leaders or high professionals with interdisciplinary expertise or across-industrial experience can do advanced research on certain topics, deepening their understanding of the issues they intend to solve thoroughly. Interdisciplinarity researches help to discover patterns, put the misplaced puzzle pieces in the right place until the premium solutions emerge. Often, the business solutions will require an integration of different sets of professional expertise and knowledge fluency across multiple disciplines involving engineering science, art & design, principles, philosophy, psychology, social norms, and sociology, etc.

Innovative research:
Knowledge does not stand still, but needs to be realigned, refined, reinvented to generate values to benefit organizations and human societies. Knowledge is based on refined thoughts, insight is based on quality knowledge; wisdom is abstract knowledge. Innovative research focuses on knowledge reinvention, idea generation or wisdom refinement, etc. Advanced research has a broad scope, requiring not only knowledge, but also creativity to expand old thinking boxes, generate fresh ideas and create values to reinvent traditional knowledge domains and catalyze innovation.

There is a variety of categorization, generalization, specialization in science and there are a handful themes and tones in art for people to break down the old box, set new standards, and recreate something fresh, enhance knowledge-transferring innovation, As outdated knowledge will stifle innovation and decelerate human progress both individually and collectively. Being creative is more often at the edge of being "knowledgeable" and intuitive, being able to expand the boundaries of knowledge, through such expansions, new knowledge is developed. Thus, knowledge professionals need to be humble, as the quickest way to learn something is to admit upfront that we don't know when we don't. Modern digital technologies bring unprecedented levels of convenience for people to learn and work, brainstorm and share, research and innovate, refine knowledge, and capture insight. It takes a multidisciplinary approach with innovative methods to do advanced research, research on our past, research on the future, bridge theories and practices, to advance human society continually.
