Interdisciplinarypractices

The disruptions are inevitable, and business transformation is unstoppable.

The businesses, and the world become over-complex, uncertain, and ambiguous. You have to look into an unknown future and attempt to define the landscape with its risks and opportunities, take a broad range of perspectives on social, economic, technological, and environmental sustainability issues and the emerging trends to reinforce the digital characteristics of the business such as enlightenment and customer-centricity.

It’s important to take an interdisciplinary management approach to integrate and optimize business via reusability, balancing and exploration.

Generalization is about understanding the essence or substance of things via abstraction or sum-up: Running a business is complex, business management has interdisciplinary complexity. Generalization provides a framework for standardization, and standardization intends to generalize or figure out a “common formula” for dealing with certain business issues such as product or process development, application reusability, etc. Generalization enables reusability; reuse is about creating simple building blocks that can be applied over and over to minimize design cost and maximize value.

From a business management perspective, reusability will bring in required simplicity at the enterprise system level. Not only should we question the applicability of a component for re-use, but we also need to capture and analyze the lessons learned from the previous applications of the component, contemplate integration cost, ensure that the business can benefit via standardization, simplification, so the organization as a whole is superior to the sum of pieces.

Be sensitive to emergent trends and keep balanced views, not via stillness, but through the state of information flow and business dynamism:
Compared to traditional organization with overly rigid hierarchy and command & control management style, today’s businesses become more organic, keep evolving due to rapid information growth and increasing pace of changes. It implies emergent opportunities and risks as part of business reality. The emergent trends can shape the behavior of future enterprises and some have been happening already. The business strategy can no longer stay static, and the business goals can no longer be well framed in advance completely.

The challenge will continue to be: 'How to achieve a balance between physical human interaction and online communication. The real power of emerging enterprise platforms and collaboration tools comes from the innate appeal of interacting socially and intellectual stimulation that people derive from sharing what they know, learning from each other, expressing opinions, brainstorming new ideas, providing feedback, co-solving problems enthusiastically. Business executives are sensitive to emergent trends, keep balanced views to understand and handle changes from different angles, streamline information flow, encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration, and enable change continuum.

Enhance a holistic management discipline to break through industrial constraints and limitations in pursuit of possibilities:
The organization becomes "unconscious" when it suffers from silo mentality, culture inertia; it is no longer responding to the external environment and it’s seemingly detached from their business ecosystem. It’s important to make a shift from seeing a business system as a set of interconnected components to seeing a system as a set of interwoven threads, explore business development in all directions, and grow the company as a living thing.

To understand the business and the world as a complex adaptive system with self-renewal abilities requires an in-depth understanding of how things have come together, being “built” on an intuitive level, and function cohesively. Business leaders and professionals need to make their minds shift from silo to holism; from static to growing; ponder the evolutionary pathways implied by the mind switches, perceive the business through anthropological, technological, psychological, economical, educational, cultural lens, and renew a harmonized business ecosystem in which the ecosystem partners need to communicate, participate, negotiate, and cooperate with each other to reinvent a super-conscious business.

Digital disruptions are inevitable, and business transformation is unstoppable. Organizations shouldn’t just respond to them in a reactive way. Apply hard and soft science wherever possible, to diagnose problems, look at the whole picture, with the interaction and relationships holistically, take a stepwise approach to solve problems that really matter and enhance an iterative change continuum.
