Innovateleadership

Isn't a tough journey to celebrate #9999 blog postings - to pursue the digital way of brainstorming, innovating and story-telling?

Today's digital workforce is hyper-connected and sophisticated with information abundance and digital fluency. Are today’s business leaders or managers really “powerful” enough to lead them effectively? It is hard to pick only one definitive attribute because all aspects of leadership work in unison and can't be viewed in isolation.

Metaphorically, what does effective leadership look like? It’s important to convey leadership philosophy & disciplines, clarify leadership substances, develop interdisciplinary expertise, build coherent leadership profiles and reputation all the time.

Influential leadership is like the light: The substance of leadership never changes, it’s all about a clear vision and a confident & humble attitude of the free mind, risk-taking spirit, and exemplary behaviors. Influential leadership is like the light, permeating into every aspect of the organizations or societies; and poor leadership is like the shadow, darkening many areas of the organization. The vision needs to be a good metaphor - “the guiding light” so that people can see themselves and their work reflected in it.

Leadership is one’s ability to paint a vivid picture, a vision of a future state and motivate others to achieve it. Being a leader means setting guidelines, giving people confidence on where to go and how to get there, supporting them and also stretching them to unleash their full potential. Top leaders go beyond a senior title, but shape a set of advanced mindsets, develop a far-sighted vision, represent the overall quality of leadership, inspire innovation, set digital tones for talent management, make a sound judgment, empower changes, etc. Bright leadership contributes to a better society with integrity, humility, respect, ethics, fairness, empathy, and sustainability, both individually and as members of a high performing leadership team to make influence effectively.

Invaluable leadership is like water
: Lao Tzu says that “superior virtue is like water.” “Water attitude” is a good analogy to depict leadership agility. Authentic leadership comes with the “natural” attitude; like water resources in the natural world: lakes are clear, fluid; rivers flow constantly; oceans generate waves, tides up and down momentarily, create numerous natural phenomena and influence ecosystems significantly. All change requires dynamic leadership, otherwise it will not have the necessary momentum.

Leadership is perhaps like choosy water: flowing towards the right spots, setting principles, optimizing processes, and developing the best and next practices to improve leadership maturity. As an invaluable leader to drive changes, if you can understand how people think or behave, what they desire and what their fears are, you are better prepared to manage them in order to gain their support. Like a dynamic ocean, profound leaders are open minded, inclusive, energetic, inspire creative culture, collective wisdom, and dynamic change relentlessly.

Insightful leadership is like a valley
: Valley is deep, expansive; an insightful leader is like a valley, with the depth of their view, insight of their perception; profundity of their understanding. The substance of leadership is about innovation and unleashing our collective human potential. There's not yet enough evidence to confirm the fade away of command and control, but there is the emerging trend for coaching leadership, innovative leadership, inclusive leadership, global leadership, situational leaders, etc.

Therefore, heterogeneous leadership is needed in today's hyper-diverse working environment and workforces. The leaders with influential competence will be more flexible and less rigidly tied to top-down, hierarchical environments. They value people and talent, understand the mindset of all sorts of people; they do not dominate discussions or provide answers which are perhaps based on outdated concepts years ago. Instead, they encourage open critical debates, constructive feedback growth, learning, and innovation rather than complacency and stagnation.

The future will become more complex, leadership is to bridge, not to divide; leadership is to inspire change, not too rigid. By harnessing strong leadership, the emergence of a new breed of organization is held together by vision and inspiration rather than fear; by purpose and engagement rather than short term thinking; by innovation and inclusiveness rather than traditionalism. So human societies are reaching the next stage of enlightenment and people-centricity.
