Initiatives

Business initiative management should be proactive and continue the progress on the roadmap to implement the company’s strategic objectives cohesively.

We are living in a complex world where change is part of the new normal, that makes it impossible to have complete knowledge and understanding of many issues facing organizations today. Forward-thinking organizations have to take an iterative approach in prioritizing and managing business initiatives.

The real challenge is to understand your priorities, and know where and how you can and should invest and improve, leverage available resources, focus on the most important things, boost the energy and excitement to achieve higher than expected results.

Behind many critical business initiatives, there are numerous points of view of business stakeholders: In the rapidly evolving business environment and complex economic systems, to stay competitive, companies must explore the emerging growth horizon and ride steep change curves confidently. Any business initiatives, especially change should be viewed as an "opportunity" for solving business problems strategically or technically.

The top executives need to ponder: Is the proposed business initiative well aligned with the organizational vision and direction? How does the business initiative differentiates the organization from its major competitors? As their sponsorship helps to establish early buy-in and support through analysis of how the "initiative" impacts the people in the organization as well as the long term perspective of the business growth. If the change had been made, there would be reasons for it, and the various roles in the change needs to be properly articulated, the roles and resources should be aligned smoothly for achieving clearly defined goals effectively and efficiently.

Logical scenarios and different information are needed to manage business initiatives successfully to achieve high performance results: We cannot predict anything beforehand but can imagine with many experiences involved in current or in the past. So most business initiatives are not spontaneous, but need to be well planned to solve the right problems in the right way. Technically, there is no single initiative that will suffice to raise business consciousness. The real challenge is to understand your priorities, and know where and how you can and should take initiatives to improve, leverage available resources, and focus on the most important things.

Solid business initiative management is not only for solving problems, but also for growing talent and building differentiated business competencies. When people are empowered, motivated intrinsically to take initiative, they are well trained and supported, building a set of professional competency.

It is an important perspective for building a solid business program with prioritized initiatives: Organizations are constrained by their resources and time. On one hand, it’s important to be as conservative as possible in identifying benefits flows as too-ambitious business initiatives could consume too much budgets and take too long, too much risks. Look for creative, cost-effective opportunities to develop cross-functional teams for solving problems alternatively. On the other hand, accelerating organizational growth is always at the top of forward-looking business executives’ agenda besides keeping business running as usual.

Many problems are interconnected; solutions to intriguing problems need to be made from a much broader and encompassing view that is not possible in linear thinking. So for the large scale of business initiatives to generate multifaceted value, it’s important to establish a cross-functional team to involve multifaceted management, plan and execute in a structural way. If stakeholder values and issues are well aligned and managed, they should become enhancements to their values.

Business management is situational, based on the business initiative flavors and scale; it usually takes systematic discipline with inter interdisciplinary expertise in implementation. The business initiative management should be proactive and continue the progress on the roadmap to implement the company’s strategic objectives cohesively.
