Itledinnovation

Importance of IT to business success is under-estimated, educating the IT team on the business and encouraging them to engage with business counterparts in a value-oriented manner.

In face of constant disruptions and a rapidly changing environment, the importance of IT to the enterprise will increase. Keeping the lights on” is important, but it’s not sufficient to build a distinguished IT organization to improve overall business agility.

Different IT organizations are at a different stage of business maturity cycles; they need to continually reinvent their organization from functioning to building differentiated business competency. IT needs to be unique, innovative, and influential to lead transformative changes seamlessly.

The evolving IT organization plays as a strategic advisor for the business
: IT organizations can be either leading or supporting, depending on the maturity of the organization and the vision of top leaders. IT needs to first understand what the business is, what their pain points are, identify areas for IT enabled business improvement. The best way to demonstrate the value of IT is to know who you are showing the value to, how to generate multifaceted business value effectively. The critical point for IT management is to develop a partnership mentality for bridging gaps between IT and business, demonstrating value to business managers by solving their problems effectively.

An evolving IT organization weaves all important business elements such as people, process, and technology into differentiated competency, proactively works as an integral part of the business to capitalize opportunity, increase risk intelligence, solve critical problems and run a high performance business.

IT management is the responsibility of the entire company:
IT management effectiveness is not based on the inside-out IT operational lens, but through the outside-in business lens. Effective IT management can be achieved not only through effective IT management, but also based on cross-functional collaboration and full support from the top leadership team. Without effective guidance/support from the board, the managers in the IT department are perhaps working in the dark.

In order to run a people-centric organization, it’s important to fine tune the management discipline from “aligning IT with the business,” to “align IT with the customer.” It’s critical to break down silos, bridge gaps, fix dysfunctional roles and relationships between business and IT, enforce automation and standardization, mitigate and manage risks effectively in order for the business as a whole to reach digital premium.

IT has to do more with innovation:
Usually, technology is the disruptive force, information is the most intensive puzzle of innovation. IT can drive all sorts of innovations, proactively push ideas on how to use information for making effective decisions, leverage technology to drive revenue growth, increase business productivity, flexibility, agility, innovation. Organizations have limited resources; IT skill gaps are reality. If IT organizations are going to move up the maturity curve, they have to alleviate themselves of the mundane, daily tasks that weigh them down, and do more with innovation.

IT needs to minimize resources on keeping the light on, but invest more in business innovation. IT management needs to develop a deep understanding of the business value chain, competitive landscape, processes and enterprise architecture, revenue models, P&L drivers, balance sheet strengths and constraints. IT as the owner of information assets of the business can enhance information management cycle, capture fresh business foresight and customer insight for improving business agility and people-centricity, providing personalized solutions to delight customers and achieving high performance results consistently.

The real importance of IT to business success is under-estimated. Educate the IT team on the business and encourage them to engage with business counterparts in a value-oriented manner. Running IT as the business’s growth engine, along with an effective strategy, and measurable execution will achieve a high-performance result and improve organizational competency.
