Innovation Management is a dynamic system which needs to continue evolving and adapting, bringing greater awareness of idea flow and innovation discipline.

Innovation is the continuous journey regardless of which vertical sectors you are in, enforce idea creation, interaction, integration to produce high performance outcomes continually. The key to the success of the innovation effort in an organization is to have the right people with creative competency assigned to the right role for building highly innovative teams to achieve high performance results. 

The other innovation challenges organizations face when attempting to innovate is a consistent process through which they can develop ideas into fruition, with the ultimate delivery of commercially astute outcomes.

Innovation is both art and science: for an ideation team, the need is a searchlight mind, and for an execution team, the need is laser focus attitude: If idea creation is more art than science, and then idea implementation is more science than art. There are differentiated capabilities and capacities requirements for idea generation and idea implementation. Frontline workers, close to the market, usually have plenty of ideas. Promote ideation near to the customer frictions. Idea generation has an edge to be a key business differentiator because these skills are based on an interdisciplinary approach. Look out for curious people with interdisciplinary expertise, inquisitive and learning agile attitude, good analytic and social interaction skills. Don’t let individual minds ruin your innovation setting. Make idea sharing and creative processes available to everybody. Sometimes out of the box thinking transforms the organization, just a stray thought, out of the blue, the miraculous results were achieved.

The art of commercialization is becoming increasingly complex, so idea implementation is usually cross-functional efforts. Ideas practitioners, with creativity associated with strategy, can help moving forward, even when facing difficulty in idea implementation. Organizations have limited resources. The challenge is in knowing how to assess ideas to fit for your organizational development blueprint; accelerate idea validation. Otherwise, you’ll run the risk of spending too much time and effort chasing down irrelevant ideas. With optimized processes, ideas can be weighed against the requirements of translating them into opportunity and profit smoothly.

Ideation teams can be evaluated via their “thinking performance,” and the execution team will be assessed via the “doer performance”: Creativity is an innate thought process to generate novel ideas. Idea implementation is usually a collective set of activities of producing great results. Idea Management, like all other key management disciplines, takes the good alignment of people, process, and technology to build differentiated innovation competency. To make an objective assessment of an idea creator, “Thinking Performance” intends to assess the individuals' effect to learn something new, generate fresh ideas via their thought processes and how they communicate; whether they usually generate positive emotions such as passion, inquisitiveness, critical/independent thinking to spur creativity. For an ideation team the need is, innovation, visualizing, analyzing & synthesis and a reprogrammable mind to keep generating fresh ideas.

In practice, even if you have many innovative ideas, it doesn’t guarantee innovation success due to the limited resources and possible execution gap. As an idea implementation team; one of the real challenges to innovation management is how to accelerate idea validation and streamline innovation processes for idea implementation. Focusing on convergent thinking helps in terms of validating or invalidating an idea and the execution of an idea. Highly innovative organizations can leverage the robust, but not overly rigid processes for idea filtering and implementation, and make objective assessment of idea implementers' “doer performance.” For an execution team, what is more needed is energy, enthusiasm; take advantage of collective wisdom, analyzing and synthesizing all sorts of information from within and even outside of the business boundary, to implement creative ideas, optimal business solutions with speed.

Inclusive team with well-blended talent is the critical success factor to idea generation or execution capability building:
The innovation strategy can't be implemented only with one or two types of people, it’s the complementary mindset, skillset and tool set that enable innovation management effectiveness. Innovation often evolves the full methodological environment which needs all sorts of talent, covering the whole innovation management scenario, from processes of managing ideas or idea handling systems to idea implementation and promotion.

Organizations need to develop a balanced innovation portfolio with both incremental innovation and breakthrough innovation. The nature of how implementation of the idea has to follow a logical path for the solution. Innovation Management is also situational, could be top-down, bottom-up, or middle out accordingly based on the innovation flavors and management styles. It’s important for managers to take a holistic view of innovation initiatives, keep eyes on what matters, identify what generates the most value for the company, streamline business resources, process, capability, capacity to improve innovation implementation success rate.
